my old highschool has two sets of obsolete machines they are currently getting rid of, a whole bunch of compaq and gateway boxes, and a whole bunch of older macs, various ilks.

I and a group of my friends helped pull some stuff off the old machines. Analysis after working on a couple hundred of each type: Apple's machines still fired up well and ran smoothly when started up and when working on them (with the exception of 3 machines which got doused in water, wonder why they didnt work.... :-P). The PCs were hell. if it could go wrong, it did. bad bios, bad memory, bad disks, etc.

the difference was that the PCs were commodity boxes, the macs were better machines.

bottom line, you get what you pay for. The apple machines may have been more expensive (maybe not, they probably got them during apple's big push for educational machines, but the market price of the machines was more expensive), but they lasted longer.

on a side note, my old laptop (which I just replaced with a shiny new powerbook 15 inch g4) was a compaq armada 1750. While I managed to get it dirt cheap through a great deal, for most ppl it was a damn expensive laptop. However, I have yet to see a more durable, reliable computer in my life. again, its what you pay for.

Imagine a world where PHBs can turn their office wall into a window onto any cube.

while perhaps this particular technology isnt useful for this yet, its already quite possible (and increasingly common) for cameras to be placed strategically in offices to watch employees. Watching employees internet use is also becoming common. This fear is nothing new, its simply a new way of doing something that is already being done.

as for abuses in general, any new technology poses abuse problems. it becomes the governments job to regulate usage to protect our rights, and it is the citizens job to elect a government that will do that. Posting this on slashdot is becoming old, as every new technology comes up there is an increasingly common disclaimer: "warning, may errode civil liberties". Instead of simply posting this, go out and vote ppl, make the difference that way. Simply posting pessimistically on potential abuse of technology doesnt do all that much.

To be honest I dont think its the field you're in that matters as much as its how much time you spend with your family. My father was/is a great dad, and I think he would have been one no matter what field he had gone into. If you can spend time with your family then there's no problem. If you cant perhaps you should seek a job with better hours, perhaps in a different field. But this is not a problem with the computer industry, its simply a problem with having a job, any job. to sum up, its a question of time, not profession.

I dont know about ps2, but the xbox uses a proprietary USB plug, a few minutes with USB extension cable, a connector from an xbox controller cable, and a soldering iron could easily make this xbox compliant. Having done it I can honestly say it takes maybe 5 mins. Now, finding games to play with it might be a little harder....

If there are any linux games that use it though you can linux your xbox (xbox-linux.org) and then use it. Though in that case I guess you could just plug it into your reg computer..... It is cool though... anyways,

This kind of thing, a retreat from society, happens usually when economic bad times hit. People deal with it in different ways. Many of these are escape mechanisms. Some read, some find faith, and more recent addtions have been reality TV series and online lives (perhaps like posting to slashdot :-P).Its the way things work. While yes people should perhaps go out and fix their real lives, the fact is people are by nature lazy and the internet allows them to start again without all the hassle of trying to fix their old life. It also anonymity from the *real* life, a separation which allows escape. The fact is, in general, online community's are nicer, prettier, and less depressing than the real world, many people prefer them (as is shown by the popularity of these games)
At least EQ and UO and the breed somewhat hide the fact that it's an escapist environment by calling it a 'mmorpg'.
I Disagree, lets call a spade a spade shall we, please dont blame the game or try to pretty up EQ and company against it. The fact is, its a more effective escape enviroment than EQ or UO and doesnt try to hide what it is. PErhaps thats braver than EQ...
in summary, while I agree with you this is a sad state of affairs, its nothing new, just a new expression of it and games such as these at least provide an escape route that doesnt put one entirely out of touch with society.
