The point with ASLR is for the good process to not be infiltrated by a bad one. I dont see the problem of loading a dll in a known memory location, unless you apply that to a dll of the good application, without it detecting that.
But when you arrive at that point of being able to do that, what's circumventing ASLR good for?
Dear Slashdot, switching one system that run Ubuntu in a VM to Fedora into running Ubuntu does not constitute 'switching to Ubuntu'. I've been running Unbuntu for some jobs (like building Android images) for ages 8). In fact I run several distros (Fedora still included)
And for that matter my goldfish boot/stress test image is a hacked Debian fs image...
I hope slashdot gets better at journalism, because right now they stink almost as bad as us, users. We are either busy building funny replies to trolls or trying to craft an informative post, they the editors keep on posting submitted trolls or historic redirect links filled with ads.
Since its so short, here is TCFP (the complete f' post) as well:
I'm leaving the Linux world and Intel for a bit for family reasons. I'm aware that "family reasons" is usually management speak for "I think the boss is an asshole" but I'd like to assure everyone that while I frequently think Linus is an asshole (and therefore very good as kernel dictator) I am departing quite genuinely for family reasons and not because I've fallen out with Linus or Intel or anyone else. Far from it I've had great fun working there.
Most of the people who should know more do, I know I've missed a few.
I may be back at some point in the future - who knows. In the mean time if you'd like my job (or indeed one of a range of others) we're hiring 8)

Not even close. The HP Envy specs: - CPU is Atom (Surface Pro is 3th generation i5) - Resolution only 1366x768 (Surface Pro is 1920x1080) - SSD only upto 64GB (Surface Pro is upto 128GB)
I am looking for a Surface Pro clone, more specifically a 16"+ laptop with 2560x1440 resolution, with touch and (a proper, precise, pressure sensitive) pen, and 250GB+ SSD, and i5 or better. If anyone knows of anything that has at least the resolution and pen, i'm grateful.
What does that mean? They don't make any money on it? Or whats the difference? Or is this some freedom of speech and therefor i'm allowed to distribute copyrighted material under that umbrella if i call myself an editor?
Can not be used commercially? Of course they can! They just need ask the owner first.. isn't this common sense in the US? In the Netherlands it is. News reporters contact people and ask for their consent before reusing the image they made and posted online. .
Depends on what you/i call large. My current laptop is a 15" Acer TravelMate 6003LMi from 2004. It has an 1400x1050 resolution. (yes its 9 years old) My desktop workspace always consists of two 17" monitors. Thats ~30" with 2560x1024 pixel resolution.
Anything below 14" i consider small. 14 upto 16" i consider normal. 17" and up, thats what i call large. I have seen and used plenty of 17" laptops, which i find decent sized but the problem always is these come with ultra low resolutions (mostly 1280x720).
Some things, like the 20" tablet are ideal for some situations. Just about anywhere a wacom monitor is used on the road, for example.
Back in the days i have seen artists lug around with bulky CRT's because they where the only thing that had both high resolution and proper pen support.
I just hope the MS Surface Pro has touch sensitive pen, and it'll be done. If only it where 18" and had a resolution of 2560x1400! All todays modern devices are made for mice and Chinese fingers.. I'm 2 meters tall for crying out loud i don't mind carrying anything not wider than me. With a fullsize keyboard if possible.
Its all relative. What sucks for the author, may be the ideal product for others.
Ask why. Motivate your counter points, and expect him to the same. (!) Argue about facts not taste. Often the WHY aligns, but each has their own HOW, yet result in the same functionally. To each their own, often with good reason.
Rewriting code? version control + start from a working situation and end with a working situation. Where working situation means bugfree and no broken parts other than those that are going to be rewritten.
I wonder why they decided to crash both, on the very same day, on the same location. It does not make much sense unless they already docked in orbit or are running some experiment that needs this to happen.
Seriously an attached keyboard for iPads? If you buy one to be productive and get work done.. get it over with and buy a Microsoft Surface or Transformer tablet with keyboard.
To me, it feels like many (vocal) people online "don't get it" when it comes to Windows 8. Some write articles, others post flaming comments. I like Windows 8, i moreover like that finally the hardware is innovating. (it was a long time due)
So people, grow up and think beyond tomorrow. You are not using a (laptop) computer IN ITS CURRENT FORM until the day you die, things will change, and this is a great innovative step. Walk the learning curve, you old dinosaurs!
Now i'm waiting for the mass consumer market to realize that there is a place for Windows 8 laptops with an 18" IPS screen measuring 2560x1600 boasting a detachable but fullsize keyboard that acts as a cover and (Windows 8 certified) touch. I will happily make due with a Surface Pro until a XL edition is released for big people like me without teener/chinese fingers.
Please remove this from the frontpage. Its just stupid to have me read this before telling me its an obvious hoax. I am surprised however that the site isn't down yet.

That would be another 9 years, not 10. Opportunity is now starting its 10th year..
There is a followup post:

Mod parent up. If i could, i would.
I couldn't even be bothered to waste my time arguing with those haters. Glad parent took the effort!
If you want a Surface competitor, look at the HP Envy X2 http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ad/envy-x2/overview.html

That raises questions.

It has recently come to my attention that they are called walloons not whales. (not that it sounds any better lol)
First, i'm Dutch, the northern neighbor of the Flemish, and we like to make jokes of each other. We also make jokes together at Whales.
Fixed that for you.
Speaking of whales, can't Belgium build that island there?
It also got more rewarding to ask for a mc donalds drivethrough in the pacific ocean.
So i just ended up on wikipedia, good grief you where not even joking about that new 21" standard. :'(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19-inch_rack#Open_Rack
19" = 48,26cm wide.
21" = 53,7cm wide.
23" = 58cm wide.
48U = 200cm high.
So 58cm 48U racks it is, dully noted.

The market for WRT54GL is there because of people buying it to put their own firmware on.

I hope Command & Conquer plays nice on a Surface Pro! (regarding touch and low end GPU)
I only yesterday found out there is a C&C Red Alert game by EA for iPad..
Of they can predict it fails in 2017, I'm sure they can avoid its final destination and make sure it sticks around for another year or so..
In pascal, the first index of a characters in a string is index 1, but any other array starts with index 0 unless specified.

You completely disregard the possibility of planets being demolished for an intergalactic superhighway bypas.
