Murder did, Well kinda. There was something in the law books (they were trying to change a few years ago) that said if someone doesn't die within 100 days of the act being committed then it's not murder.
Modern medicine is great, except in cases like this where there are just machines keeping the body alive & it's illegal to turn them off.
The law was something like "If they die within 100 days it's murder, if it's 101 or longer then it's only G.B.H"
The origional business model from IBM for the PC was up to 500K PC's over 2 years.
IBM simply got it wrong with how they did the software. Instead of bring the software in house like their previous computers they left it with a 3rd party (M$).
PC's started selling them and then clones started appearing. M$ then was in a position that it could sell the OS for these clones without any restrictions.
I installed a copy of OSX onto my iPod. I've had my powerbook fail to boot because it needed to fsck the fs. So if that ever happens again I can just plug my iPod in to my powerbook and just boot from that like a rescue disk.
good karma from redhat / fedora ? Where do you get that idea ?
I work in a hosting company, The only real Redhat builds I see going out have a paid for control panel (ensim, plesk cpanel etc)
All the rest are other linux's.
As for yum, wasn't that origionally just a port / take off of APT on debian?
The only problem with Debian is it takes sooo long to switch from one version to the next, but when you're talking about what 12 different hardware platforms. And if you want the latest you just use unstable / testing.
Not to mention that I find building.deb's ALOT easier than rpm's.
iLife on a mac ? It even comes with a few other potentially useful apps.
If you're only wanting to write a DVD for friends, family, small presentations, it's well priced.
Ofcourse you need a mac with a superdrive (note must be on apple's supported hardware list, a standard DVD +- RW isn't good enough for this app) Any DVD RW that come with the mac will be. Ones that are purchased seperately / replacements may not be.
Not if BMW put the controls to their cars in different places, then patented them.
Now you have a situiation where BMW can licence it's control layout and any one (suck as ford) MUST buy a licence if they want to sell cars.
Now add in if you drive your 'copied' BWM off your own property (such as taking the kids to school or going to work), you face fines & a criminal record.
Now you have a situiation where the value to BMW is increased.
How else do you think most of this software became the defacto standard.
eg When was the last time that a recruitment agency would want a resumae in anything but as a M$ Word document.
If any business was serious on software piracy they would offer older versions of their software. or even cut down versions, at significantly lower prices for home users. Maybe eve have something like "If you're a home user and need this sort of functionality try {insert cheaper product}". Ofcourse you need to know your userbase well and be sure that they need the features that your only product has.
As much as I hate M$ and how they operate their business I do give them that point. Almost every common app of theirs has a cheap / free alternative. Office => Works
The only real problem I see with pirating (if you can call it that) is that it denies money from the cheaper alternatives. Most of the time people would have never purchased the expensive software.
eg ppl use Photoshop instead of paint shop pro, or the gimp. Would a home user ever spend $$$$+. A bunch would however spend $$ for something they use on a semi-regular basis.
I've purchased my share of commercial / shareware software, but there is some software that I will never purchase. Typically the sort that has gotten itself into a 'must have' position, then priced itself out the average users pocket so only businesses can afford it.
At the end of the day most people ask themselves 'Are they asking a reasonable price for the software'. If it is, then at some point they will pay for it. And yes put some form of copy protection on it, if nothing more than to bug people having to find a key / crack every time they have to re-install. The trick is not to go so far as to annoy your paying customers.
Think of how many less pirated copies of windows there would be if people could purchase OEM type copies from the shop. Aka Here's the software & licence, but either it's unsupported or you have to pay.
that kinda defeats the purpose. I could have a different identity at each entity. Then it's a case of what entity would the web site subscribe to ? one or many ?
If it's only one you'd get alot of users who find it simply isn't worth their time to sign up to another entity. If you allow multiple then you could have multiple accounts from the same person which kinda defeats the purpose.
Or even dare I say it having the program keep a track of it's version number so when it needs to overwrite older software it can tell the software IS an older version.
It's more like file association than autorun. Sure stuff happens when you insert your cd / dvd but it doesn't run applications FROM the CD (which most people think of autorun as)
It's great that each character had such depth. And Book being a secret agent or something,
There were hints there, but unless he was from some 5th column in the corp trying to protect the doc & sister, then why would a spy hang around with this lot ?
There's only one thing that makes the crew / ship 'too small time' to be bothered with.
Not so sure about that part of you watch some of it. I got the impression that there was alot more to the character after they used his ID in one of the episodes and were let free
Following the death of a powerful jedi / sith logic wouldn't it make more sense for Yoda to have hidden on a planet where a jedi had died ?
Lots of good energy about, What's a little more good.
What I had understood from the 1st trilogy was that Dagobah (sp?) was teaming with life so projected a strong ambient force presence. Also the force wasn't good or bad, just how it's used.
That's just what I had understood at the time anyway

Why should you be able to build your own ?
Just because you tinker in software doesn't mean you should be able to tinker in the hardware.
Also there is a large difference between a chip and a a daughter board that would do the same thing
With the traditional purchase of a book you can resell / give it away.
How do you plan to deal with transfer of ownership of their 'Licence' to your book ?
I've really got to wonder why universities are giving money.
So how many students is that who's loans are going straight to politics ?
Microsoft NEVER controlled the architecture.

Just be in the directory.
src.rpm's still have worse dependancy issues than src.deb's
I'm yet to have a dependancy issue for any package on debian.
Debian Stagnant ? You're joking right ?
.deb's ALOT easier than rpm's.

Wasn't Apple a certified Unix with A/UX back in '95 ?
It was OS7 with a UNIX core
OSX however may not be a certified UNIX.

You mean like NASA spending ALOT developing a pen that will wrte in space. Russia starts handing out pencils
The server still seems to be responding. Just give it a min or two. The slide show takes a bit to load then runs fine
iTunes allows you to rip to MP3 (Well on my mac it does, not sure about the windows version).
It's just the default is AAC
Or even dare I say it having the program keep a track of it's version number so when it needs to overwrite older software it can tell the software IS an older version.
That's a grey subject.

I wonder if www.allofmp3.com has it yet. They seem to be cheaper than itunes
Because their version of loaded doesn't match everyone else's version of loaded.
They think loaded = installed
everyone else thinks loaded = run
That's exactly what I was meaning.
It's great that each character had such depth. And Book being a secret agent or something,

former minister looking for his way

I'm guessing that /. is the exception to that rule.
Not to mention almost every other standards compliant page
Serial console.
Most non x86 comes with the console on a serial port. Alot of newer x86 server boards have console redirection to a serial port
But port 25 is for email. Email is not illegal
But Spam is Illegal (in most places), with more and more countries around the globe writing laws against it.
