No, I really don't care where the money and power we have came from. Quite frankly, I don't care why they are the way they are. The point is that there are a lot of people suffering over there, and it can at least be helped.
Distributed properly, it can clean water, administer medical treatments, and provide some level of education. Those are the things that are going to bring third world nations out of poverty. Suffering is a breeding pit for exactly what you described above.
Money alone cannot fix those problems, but money is necessary to do the things that will fix those problems.
Humans possess a little known thing called compassion. It'd be nice if people exercised it a little more often.
So people should only work for themselves and their personal advancement? For those of us who realize that we have a luxury of the opportunity to do just that, it's nice to give back to those who don't have jobs available, who are stuck in a one room bungalo doing whatever it is they do to stay alive. For some of us, the "too bad for them, screw 'em" attitude doesn't quite sit well.
I'm not trying to say we shouldn't spend all of our money on third world nations, etc. On the other hand, I don't think any one should have a problem giving back a large portion to the rest of humanity as a greatful gesture for our relative comfort.
Have you ever seen the EverQuest economy? It cut the 'normal' or casual player out. Prices were so inflated it was darn near impossible to get anything without killing the mob yourself. Not much for a player economy.
That too is a dangerous prospect. No one likes leaving an enormous hunk of metal out there without any ability to control it. Letting it die in space and then hoping we can get up there in the future and take care of it, is an extremely irresponsible act. Its far safer to simply bring it down while we are still in control of it, otherwise, it might very well cost us that billion dollars to bring it down safely in the future.
I don't think 'cheap' space flight technology will be running within the next 20 years. They are already starting the program for Apollo-esque rockets as the next gen spaceship. Its cheaper than the shuttle no doubt, but by no means cheap. Given the longevity of the shuttle project, I don't think we'll be seeing anything 'cheap' any time soon.
There is an issue of cost effectiveness and danger. If the hubble's instruments fail there is a very good possibility of it falling from the sky. The gov. wants to control that fall so they can guarantee it lands ina non-populated area.
Agreed. I too have used Windows for about 10 years and I've not had a problem. I'm spent 4-5 hours cleaning up multiple computers. I finally had had enough though and put up a notice on my site that because these people refuse to do what I tell them (deny most activeX controls, don't download programs from kiddy warez sites, etc) I'm not responsible for the mess. I'm growing very good at saying no. It isn't worth it.
Which is the whole problem. A large group of people, dare I say most people, aren't capable of making their own decisions about security. This stuff needs to be kept in a sand box.
Given the range of change, assuming his numbers are correct, that.3 degrees could be easily swallowed by another drop, etc. Depends on what part of the cycle we're in. Don't get me wrong, I believe that global warming is a problem. I don't think its the cataclysmic end of the world that its being portrayed as. At least not yet. Unfortunately, it takes sensationalism to get people to do anything.
Easy with imflammatory statements like that. A great quote from Stephen Hawkings "A Brief History of Time"
"there is no physical necessity for a beginning. One can imagine that God created the universe at literally any time in the past. On the other hand, if the universe is expanding, there may be physical reasons why there had to be a beginning. One could still imagine that God created the universe at the instant of the big bang, or even afterwards in just such a way as to make it look as though there had been a big bang"
Eveolution neither proves, nor disproves creationism, or a belief in a God.
Unfortunately, while you may be smart enough to keep yourself and your wife quiet, your kids may not understand. They are naturally curious, especially when strange people are walking around the house at night.
Its just not a chance I'd be willing to take.
Now, if its an ex-lover, etc that is going for my gun. Well if they want it that bad, I don't think its going to make much difference whether I have a gun or not. I'm betting they probably brought one of their own. If they didn't, they'll be creative.
I wouldn't trust someone to take whatever it is and walk away. When it comes to my life I'd like to count on something other than the thief's good will.
I just checked google...it happens enough to be worried about.
I think people are less likely to burgle a house if there is a possibility of the owner having a gun.
Furthermore, countries that have banned guns have seen increases in violent crimes.
On the other hand, it might have a much more significant deterent effect if people actually used chainsaws to protect their house/family...whoever is chasing you with that chainsaw has to be crazy even to think about using it...crazy enough to use it...
Unfortunately, you said theft in your post. So now anything you may have said will be entirely ignored as you get flamed on the definition of theft. Enjoy!
I think the result of such an impact would be far more widespread than simply a disaster for the poor countries that it does or does not hit. According to their estimates, this thing would hit earth with the energy equivalent to 1500 megatons of TNT or about 100,000 Hiroshima bombs. Thats a pretty significant impact.
I agree with you. They are simply taking care of the people who are trading things illegally.
But, learn how to argue and make your point without being such a prick. Address the issue, not the person.
Your comparison to a thief is interesting. It implies a prior knowledge that it was wrong. WMP has been a part of Windows since at very least Windows 95. It hasn't been a problem for 10 years. A more appropriate judgement would have been a mandate for future versions of windows. To the best of my knowledge, no one told windows to stop including features other than the kernel. Quite frankly I'd like to keep it that way.
What kind of filters do you use in your coffee maker? They are probably different from mine. If you have a different brand car than me, you probably have a different style of brakes. Your cell phone charger will most likely not fit my phone, etc.
Open standards aren't really all that prominent unless sales mandate it (CD's for example).
Regardless, the OEM software bundles you received were a nice add-on. Unfortunately, the ability to play audio and video files is expected. Its what 'computers' do. They double click the file and they expect it to open.
Quite frankly, I'd hate to see RealBad bundled with anything, and really WMP is among the best.
I think there are battles to fight with MS, I just don't think this is one of them.
I know exactly what monopoly means. My point is that Microsoft is being forced to degrade the user experience. An option to select whether or not to install it, or an easy way to remove it is a far superior option than selling without the option period. Once again, people are too dumb to know much better anyway, lets not screw others because we have some fanatical hate of MS.
The problem is that mom and pop are going to get their new computer and its going to be broken. It won't play the videos their kid send them, etc. Its simply one of those things people expect to simply be there. MS has bundled software that takes care of some of the small common tasks (Web Browser, Email, WMP, etc.) I'm not sure MS cares about the media player market, I don't think they make much money. Its simply a feature that users expect, and most people won't know what to do without it.
But we're talking about releasing a gimped product. People are ignorant sheep. And its not like Microsoft abused their monopoly to take over the media player market. WMP has been included in Windows for as long as I remember. People want a way to play videos, etc on their computer. This would be like asking auto manufacturers to leave interiors out of their cars because they need to be open to competition from custom shops. Its absurd.

...especially because they claim they are explicitly not responsible for anything.
...its foolish to speculate without any information or evidence to support any claims whatsoever.

That won't happen. That would imply they support whatever application it is. They'll just ship it without it.
