Special rules for any company has to be viewed with suspicion, special rules when a company has actually been caught buying votes is even more worrying.
Worse than that, some people are actually accepting this as SOP and still want to give the "benefit of the doubt" to them.
A lot of irregularities have occurred in favour of Microsoft, rules have been bent in favour of Microsoft, my suspicion is this will favour Microsoft. You believe, I gather, that it will not favour anyone.... why the change? Again, another change in procedure.....
Sensible... let me see, I have Vista installed right now, all devices are working fine, if I upgrade some devices won't work.... there is support for more devices I hear..... but if you have some devices installed, that are working right now - you will not be able to update because they are not supported anymore.
from microsoft:
Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible
How come devices that were supported before are not now?
Is there a way to find out what devices?
Auto update is on by default (no, I switched mine off but lots of people do not know how to) and the only way to hear about issues is to be part of a users group or forum or wait till you get a message that it couldn't install. Yes, real sensible. From the Microsoft site again:
Some Windows Vista users may encounter an issue with a small set of hardware devices that may not function properly after updating a Windows Vista PC to Windows Vista SP1. This is an issue with the way the device drivers were re-installed during the Windows Vista SP1 update process, not with the drivers themselves--these drivers worked on Windows Vista RTM and they work on Windows Vista SP1. This problem is typically corrected by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. We are working with the manufacturers of these devices to get the known problematic drivers and their install programs updated, and also on other solutions we can use to ensure a smooth customer experience when updating to Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. For new PCs provisioned with Windows Vista SP1, this is not an issue.
Sounds like I'll wait a while (provided Microsoft doesn't try and update regardless of my wishes) and wait to see if it smells of roses or fertilizer. Bugger, been hoping for the file transfer thing to be fixed.
There is a big difference in that if you want to interact with other businesses (who all have years of investment in word/excel format) you will need to have Office installed - even if you don't need all the features of Office - note that because it is "the best" doesn't mean you need to have it, I think Ferraris are "the best", guess what I don't drive?.
With the internet there were problems - lots of sites with IE only features, even sites with the broken Front Page scripting of back slash instead of forward slash (it was mighty handy that IE could render it). I used Linux and some sites I could not view at all.... but luckily the net is still at least close to compliant (thanks I suspect to LAMP and a lot of hard work by the open source community).
http://grumpywookie.wordpress.com/2008/02/12/problems-installing-visual-studio-2008-on-vista-x64/>definitely not isolated - oh and his suggestion did not work. Lots of other examples of that. Your suggestion of using 32 bit instead seems a strange suggestion, I bought a 64 bit notebook, I expected it to work with a 64 bit operating system that came with it. I have heard others say "you can run Vista with 512mb ram too, I do not use the "pretty stuff", it was dog slow no ifs, no buts, no maybes... SLOWWW...... DOG SLLOOOOOWWWWWWW. Memory is cheap these days, there is no excuse for selling the notebook as it was - not Microsofts' problem by the way - unless they encouraged the companies to sell in that configuration. You have just tried covering up some of Vistas problems by:
a. Suggesting using a different version.br>
B. Suggesting I made up how slow Vista (64 bit a least) was and suggesting disabling features is a valid outcome.
C. You obviously did not search for any example of problems with Vista and VS and brushed off my problem - this does Microsoft no favours, they need people to tell them what is good with their product AS WELL AS what is bad, so they may address them. No sign of the OS X issues yet.....
Don't hold back, otherwise you'll look like you're making it up. Slow network speed is a killer for me (Vista on a notebook networked to a Samba box.. no probs with other OSes - or XP).
Vista is 64 bit, I have programs that do not work, Cisco client is one but there were a few - I've found work-arounds. Drivers aren't an issue as it was pre-installed
Notebook came with 512mb ram - shared video...do I need to elaborate? It should be a criminal offence to sell Vista with 512mb ram - now has 1.5 gig and is OK....
had trouble installing VS2008, after trying to fix the dotnet framework stuff for 2 days, gave up and did a complete reinstall of the entire OS and put VS2008 on first.
There are problems with Vista, I hope they'll be addressed (hopefully not by pointing fingers at problems with other OSes). I find OS X quite good, it has problems too but it definitely feels better finished - a bit like comparing the linux gui to the Windows gui in my opinion but Windows has it's strenths too - the main one is what you jumped on, lots of apps. My preference is still Linux but then I don't really use all the bells and whistles gui stuff and most of my needs are served by what is on offer with Linux (programming, music composition, recording etc - yes, all of these can be addressed by Windows but at what cost CUBASE, guitar pro, fruityloops etc for a hobbyist? Great apps by the way but I'm more than happy with the Linux offerings). My work requires work with VS (which is an excellent IDE, again, my opinion) which is the main reason for Windows with me but it is a reasonable OS in it's own right, like I said earlier, I hope they fix the issues and make it better.
But surely these actions at least put some terrists out of work?!
Interesting perspective, I used to think an important part of Western justice was:
"That it is better 100 guilty Persons should escape than that one innocent Person should suffer, is a Maxim that has been long and generally approved."
But that was a quote by someone that obviously had no idea about bringing "freedom, liberty and justice" to the United States. (Benjamin Franklyn, in a letter to Benjamin Vaughan). These days it seems popular in the US to believe it is better for a hundred innocent people to suffer than one guilty person go free. p.s. the spelling nazi is on holiday today....
Isn't the he an employee of Microsoft?
Surely he would be a brave person to bite the hand that feeds him... especially such a big hand, attached to a long arm at that.
No they won't. For that crowd, bribery, collusion and cartelism are all part of the free-market experience, and they like it just fine! Just so long as the gummint doesn't butt in on all the fun.
Correction, just so long as they win.
I didn't know that the goal of having ID cards was to keep the terrorists safe...
terrorists == politicians.
Must have thought the guy was a politician - considering the number of petitions he had his name on....
You are just like the people you refer to. I have a Vista box and this is something to be concerned about - by bringing this to peoples' attention it:
A: Gives a warning so one might be prepared for problems (create images, possibly delay the update etc)
B: Puts some pressure on the company concerned to fix it.
What you are implying is either this update thing is not true or it is not serious. If it is not true, this sort of forum is a good place to find out, if it is true, you REALLY were talking about yourself and AC sums you up well as this is serious to those affected.
Your other assurances about the stability / usability of Vista also sounds like the people you refer to. I use Vista too and, regardless of what you say, there are issues that need fixing (network write / reads for one, there are others too). Pretending there aren't does not help.
Note, this also applies to your so called "retarded" brethren.
Linux suffers from the same vulnerability. You can copy it as many times as you want and it works just as well as the copy from the original developers.
And it's much easier with Linux - so Windows is more secure!!!
You're right that the US is trying to change the situation there (the ruling was overturned by the US backed government) and it will take at least a generation to make an impact - but to see it as a problem of religion, IMHO, is a bit nieve as it wasn't long ago that Catholics were viewed in a poor light (it is possible to pick any religion and find similar issues).
Afghanistan has a history of being conquered (this would make any country unstable) - the time before was USSR and hence the birth of the Taliban (AFAIK they are from Pakistan - "an important ally" I have heard... Politics makes strange bedfellows.... ), and were assisted and trained with US assistance). The "people" have had no real say as to their destiny for a long time. Sharia law is just another tool to keep them in line (in this case it is being used to suppress information).
In the US you have anti terror laws now that are being used to manipulate people, the US is locking up people without trial for prolonged periods and quietly letting them go without trial or even charging them.
The blame is placed on the likes of Bin Laden but IMO to remove the protections of Western society and imprison and, by some peoples definition, torture people that are subsequently proven that they were not involved in any terror related activities is giving succour to Bin Laden and his ilk.
Benjamin Franklin said "that it is better one hundred guilty Persons should escape than that one innocent Person should suffer." (lucky they didn't have IP laws in those days... the idea was from Blackstone: "Better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer.") - I wonder what his take on the current trend would be? I do not know a lot about sharia law, but I suspect that, like all legal systems, is open to abuse from all sides (no I do not want to live under sharia law - I know very little about it and am comfortable in my little Western cocoon). I hope the Western world persevere with rebuilding Afghanistan with an altruistic agenda as it could give hope to people living under oppression elsewhere in the world - as any other way (including insulting their beliefs based on the actions of corrupt despots) would send the wrong message.
Oh and yes you are allowed to say "that", just as the other side has a right to express their view... sadly we seem to be approaching a situation where people are judging individuals based on race (middle eastern != 'muslim terrorist', US != 'ignorant warmonger' islamist != 'extremist') instead of the actions of the individual.
human hearing is capable of differences in the milliseconds magnitude, not microseconds.
One source I found on this: Jamminpower there were other sources, are we talking the same thing? I understand it as the difference in time between ears hearing the same sound, not time difference between different notes/sounds (i.e. strumming a chord on a guitar)....
Disclaimer: I definitely do not have "discerning" hearing.
I have heard two arguments that sound like they might have merit, one is binaural hearing (we listen with two ears for direction and location) - if you play a tone in one ear and play the same tone in the other ear slightly delayed humans can discern 10-15 microsecond delay (some as low as 2 - 3 microseconds) and with sampling 44khz this equates 20 micro seconds per sample, at 96khz it is 10 micro seconds per sample, hence you can hear a difference.... I would have thought you would need a headset and am not sure you would neccessarily prefer the 96khz reproduction.
The other is the one where higher frequencies interact with the lower frequencies and the harmonics alter the wave forms - which they do (why a piano sounds like a piano and a guitar sounds like a guitar... they call it "warmth" I believe). With a higher sampling rate and bit rate (dynamics), it more accurately forms the shape of these altered waves hence a "warmer" reproduction. I would think you would need a great sound sytem and a room built for "listening" to have any hope of picking up differences (and I don't think rock music would really be an ideal test subject) but....
I can't hear things other people can definitely hear (too many concerts) so I can't judge one way or another but the big plus for me is I don't have to worry about an expensive sound system - just a SUPER LOUD ONE!!
Err, I was being sarcastic, I took exception to the term stupid.... the idea was to point out that it is important to listen to all sides of a debate without belittling and effectively dismissing peoples concerns by comments like stupid.
Well said, I fully agree, that's why it is important that this sort of information should be suppressed. It gives stupid people ideas about things they know absolutely nothing about. It is important that governments should legislate that whoever "leaks" these sorts of things are classified as terrorists and should be locked away for life at the very least. Governments have highly intelligent professionals advising the cream of our society (our politicians) who in turn make judicious decisions based on fact. As a safeguard, our politicians select judges who are impartial and above reproach to make sure that the best interests of the people are looked after. These sorts of stories are so easily distorted and used to inflame situations that anywhere they "discuss" these things should immediately be shut down as it is obvious that those forums are deliberately manipulating the stupid people in our society, if people want to know something about nuclear power, they should contact their government. Nuclear power is safe, this minor technical problem they experienced was well contained and it is a pity that now the stupid people will miss-interpret the events - one very good example why our democratically elected governments need more control over the media and the internet. Immediately lock up the families that are suing the Japanese government I say, more stupid people doing stupid things. Misleading stories (nothing happened and yet the story - a fairytale I say - implies that there was a risk to people) do not help in the betterment of our society.
Please people, do not worry, your government is here to look after your best interests, Nuclear power is safer than any other form of power, your government will ensure it stays that way. Your government would not lie to you.
Wow, if true I will check out their products next purchase but I just looked at their site (Australia) and all products appear to come with....would you like to guess? Very difficult.... Vista!
I'm not saying anything is wrong with Vista but I would assume that there might be other operating systems that people would prefer, what is the difficulty of making the operating system an option? They already have the option of different versions of Vista, one option of no OS.
Special rules for any company has to be viewed with suspicion, special rules when a company has actually been caught buying votes is even more worrying.
