It's not a "would you rather" question. The question is, given the linux desktop market, would you rather spend the extra x dollars to gain that market advantage? I'm not trying to be a fanatic here, I'm just asking: if target markets make the investment a losing one, I'd like to see the numbers so I can be convinced that this isn't some ignorant executive equating open source operating systems with open and rampant copyright violation.
If you pull up a ctrl-F on page 1 (at least at this point) you'll find a related thread with a link to a linux gazette article discussing what happened to the planned client. Apparently LGP would have handled distrobution, and if licensing was sane, they probably would have been support, too...
That's just stupid. It's not like Blizz has anything to fear. There's no good chance of "source purification" to worry about, there's hardly any MSFT retailation that could be expected, and if so, then ID Software has a lot to worry about. I guess the more appropriate question to ask Blizzard on the Linux client issue is: Why are you alienating a market which is most likely more dense in players than your other target platforms? Why did you can WoW Linux?
Will it run Linux? Fixed: Will linux run it? I guess more appropriately, since Cedega runs the game without many major pitfalls or bottlenecks, does Blizzard plan to officially support a natively compiled- or at the very least cedega-wrapper compiled- version of WoW, including but not limited to patch testing on cedega, closer integration with linux-based systems (or even XFree in general. Yay for OSX!)? I haven't bought the game yet partially because I hear it's addictive like crack, but mostly because I'm not completely convinced of the functionality on my linux system running cedega. I would love to see a native linux build (which may also further the use of linux as a gaming platform)
Actually it was responding to the question of site functionality + standards compliance...
I guess I got too riled up over development platforms and forgot to mention "fuck ActiveX and every other client-side add-in except CSS and HTML"
I'm beginning to wonder if the bigger problem is that you and I are both right, and that the parenting environment really has become more hostile, and yet the so-called "family interests" that are being pushed forward are completely NOT. I mean, if I were a few years older and a little more married, assuming I had a child, I certainly wouldn't want the government to parent my child. Perhaps herein lies the problem: that we DO have an environment hostile to parents, and the values we push to improve that environment only end up making it worse! PS: This topic was so last week.
three words: PHP and MySQL. I say it over and over, this is like the peas and carrots of the web. Fuck JSP, fuck coldfusion, fuck.net, and fuck PERL CGI (sorry/.) PHP and MySQL bound together are fast, extensible, secure, easy to use, and one can easily make standards-compliant HTML with them. [/flamebait]
our leaders, (Senators and Representatives) were elected to protect our freedoms, not to further the interests of any one particular group (parents in this case). I'm not saying that we need to create a society hostile to the idea of parenting but we can't expect to hold the parental community in the arms of the nation while free single or childless adults have to suffer restricted freedom of speech because of them. Maybe I like to be able to hear people freely express sentiments about issues some people would call "family unfriendly". Maybe that's something that needs to be discussed, while giving a reasonable helping hand to parents. I don't think, under any condition, that we should allow the interests of parents seize control over the government while free american citizens have a right to remain childless.
Or masturbation for that matter, or other comprimising positions. As a pornography conoisseur(sp), I can tell you there are mountains of non-penetrating porn.
Also, in response to a parallel comment about the Great Firewall of US, holy shit, that scares me, don't ever mention that again.
From a competitive standpoint, take Linux, for example. There's really nothing innovative today that Linux does that we can't do. There's no new feature or new design that can be done only on Linux, and not on Microsoft. So I don't worry too much about Linux and open-source projects out-innovating us.
That's right, 64 bit x86 instructions work perfectly on windows, and weren't a complete failure when microsoft tried to patch the OS, whereas the linux kernel had incorporated support before AMD64 was released.
Really, I remember the can-spam act. I hope my dad doesn't kill me for linking to this, but this image [img104.imageshack.us] shows the number of spam positives my dad received over time, and has the Can Spam act marked. The governor's statement that this will "Stop spam" is hardly founded.

Well, at my high school (Stratford High School in Houston), my friend and I have tried to form a club to educate people about Linux, but little success has come out of that.
Honestly, it's all about the games. A good 90% of the people I ask tell me honestly "I would switch to linux in a second if games were released on it"
Not to belittle the current games, but NATIVE ports (no wine-layer) of Warcraft III, CounterStrike, HL2, etc. would have made all the difference in the linux revolution, so to speak.
basically, I'm saying what *should* be focused on by the open source community, if support of teenagers is sought, is a broad petition of blizzard to include native linux support- or a library with at least the capabilities of DirectX so games could be developed without the limitations of OpenGL.
not meant to be flamebait, but it has been noted that GL does trade-off functionality for portability.

what about the new look to lokitorrent's site? yro goons are missing it. lokitorrent's down.
although I was making a metaphor out of "script kiddie" and turning it into a species of sorts, so the plural is unnecessary. :-P
where's my prehensile tail? I could be twice as efficient using my tail on my mouse.
