    Corporate structures being what they are it simply isn't possible to communicate an intangible risk like 'what if a hacker breaks in and copies all our data' well enough to garner the kind of funding to implement real security. At least not at a company the size of Sony

    I work for a company of roughly the same size, in a similar industry (hardware not content). I am currently one of the people in charge of validating our security measures. There are several of us, and I am likely near to bottom of that particular totem pole, yet I have the ability to stop the launch of the product I am working on at a cost of likely millions of dollars if I find an issue really late in the game. While the product may ultimately ship even if I find an issue, it will not ship till upper management is fully appraised by the leaders of my team, and by what I've seen already they have substantial power to force delays as needed to provide *real* security, not the illusion of it. So not all is lost in the big business world.

    If BD_Rom blanks were the same price or even price/gig as DVD media the adoption rate would be much higher. The content creators have ensured this won't happen. What they don't realize is this has also greatly hurt the general adoption rate of the format.
    If disks were cheap, people would use them for their home movies, what with 720p cameras being commonplace now.

    I recently had to explain to someone that my sony* DCR-96 was DVD quality even though it wasn't 1080p/720p etc. they really didn't get it. It wasn't until I shot identical scenes on both the DCR and a FlipUltraHD 720p camera and mastered them to a DVD, then played it on a 1080p TV did it sink in that raw pixel counts don't help in consumer video. I work in a Fortune 50 company, and our IT dept. is sane enough to realise that some groups have special needs that can not be met by IT. Those groups can buy any hardware they want and place it on the network provided that it meets minimum security guidelines and IT has a root login in case there is an IT event.
    This is all reasonable and allows things to get done.

    The main caveat that applies is that IT is not responsible for anything on that machine, your data backups are on your head. They disavow all responsibility.
    It all comes back to who's ass gets put in the grinder when something goes wrong. When crap like HIPPA is involved I'd imagine this is amplified dramatically (in my case it's SARBOX that can cause grief).

    - Cut swaths out of NSA/DOD (no you *don't* need that much surveillance, PC be damned, lets use good 'ol fashioned profiles).
    - Start a laddered reduction in social security:
      * you are 50+ you get benefits as expected
      * 40+ you get 75%, 30+ == 50%, 20+ == 25%, less than 20? start saving.
