My simple solution? I refused my last promotion to an exempt position, instead staying a technician. I do engineering level work, with engineering responsibilities, but technician pay. Thing is, while my "per hour" may be lower, my total pay is nearly the same, because engineers are "always on" and I get OT. Further I can bail after 8 hours and no one can bitch about it. Overall it's a better deal than people realize. Once my kids get older I may take a promo, but not till then. -nB
Assuming we're talking about Madoff, they expected normal market risks and not fraud. If we're talking about the banking crisis, then it's really the same thing, except many individuals acted in bad faith (within the rules, but in bad faith none the less). If it's something else then *woosh* right over my head. -nB
but will you want to scream and be unable to do so?
Also would you really want to be Borg? Not only will your brain deteriorate, but your body will as well. I've given some real thought to how the Borg likely started and this sums it up really. They added the ability to communicate with a central computer and each other electronically (it's faster afterall), and next thing you know the hive mind was born./. even shows that hive mentality is possible in humans, this would simply enshrine it.
Mind you, so long as I was one of the first units produced I'm not sure I would mind it much. I think the initial cadre would be individuals for the most part (after the babbling idiots first produced when things go wrong and the bugs are worked out). -nB
multipolar and multilevel information can be represented by a string of bits, so ultimately, yes we should be able to sim an entire brain in binary logic. I fear that the simulated brain's 'processor' speed would be like trying to simulate the latest Power6/Cell cores from IBM on an old intel 4004 though...
last time I came up on a DUI checkpoint I was completely sober, and was on my way to my brothers house for an all-nighter of Halo and booze (great combo BTW).
Looking for some entertainment I made an obvious end-run around the checkpoint by turning into an adjacent shopping center just before the check, and back onto the road just after the check. I was lit up and pulled over within 30 seconds. I was asked "do you know why I pulled you over?" to which I responded truthfully: "I avoided the checkpoint".
several minutes later I was released because I had nothing on my person, nothing in plain sight to give probable cause to search my vehicle, and I passed the field sobriety check by blowing a 0.02. What's scary about that number is that I had *nothing* to drink in the last 3 hours, and no booze at all that entire day... So where did the.02 come from? -nB
this is far less of a moral grey area than downloading is.
I think you have that backwards. downloading (as implied in your post) is specifically to avoid paying for content. Modding an Xbox can lead to playing homebrew games, apps, and other very cool stuff that has little to nothing to do with piracy. Hell I modded countless Xbox 1's to run linux.
and I ran a rather dedicated repair/modding service as well: xbx.networkboy.net fact of the matter was that in order to repair some of these consoles you had to mod them. in addition I never placed hacked code on the machine (I would use the cromwell BIOS, which had *no* ms code). suppose it's time to take down that site before I get arrested for it.
meh I would have pointed to the "cops acted stupidly" comment myself.
Reverse racist? Assuming his friend could do no wrong?
Look, I realize that someone's going to troll or flamebait me, but fact is I don't think anyone since Regan was very eloquent once off teleprompter...
As to Regan, didn't he use astrologers (by way of his wife)? And Carter was a terd. And Nixon was a Liar. And I forgot Ford (sorry) And Kennedy was in a box before I was born (Damn shame too, I wanted to see the moon landing...)
a solar sail will get you to.1c no problem. It would take some time, and I would highly suggest that you use gravity assists to get going as fast as possible first, as those are faster accelerators... But none the less, a sail will get you going fairly fast, no problem. Just (like everything else) takes time. -nB
We asked for that patch months ago. You guys blew us off, so we kidnapped Joe Dawson and have him in our dungeon writing that patch as we whip him on your behalf.;-)
in all reality, that's happened here as well, most notable incident was when we had a round of layoffs. One HR Dept. was in charge of "golden handshakes" and another was in charge of eliminating redundancies. Apparently they didn't communicate all that well as our senior developer took the cash buy out and ran, while the only other dev was laid off. It took almost a month before the company realized that they had done gone fucked up. By then the senior dev was incommunicado, never to be seen again, and the jr. dev (me) had accepted a position at another company, in a completely different discipline (hardware rather than software work), and was unimpressed by the offer of having my old job back.
I presented them with two options (neither was over the top IMHO): $100K/yr as senior dev with a 2 year minimum contract, or a pay to play per job contract at $125/hr for on-site work and $0.20/LOC for software work, comments included in the line count, but single open/close curlies and blank lines not counted. Entire codebase counted (so ~$2500 per compile). Each new build ordered would include 4 hours of on-site support, and unlimited bug fixes + 2 ECOs for where I coded to the DOCs but the part didn't like it for some reason.
This codebase was for a piece of test equipment that was developed in-house, so no external vendor can support it. Last I heard my old manager was dusting off his C skills and the code changes he put in worked, but they had "issues". -nB
I have a cabin that I retreat to. It's in the california red woods. (mother in-law's boyfriend's cabin). No cell service, no internet, no TV, no phone. My kids enjoy playing at piggie park. I enjoy watching them. In the evening I spend the 20 min or so to drive to the beach, and I fly a kite.
One long weekend (Friday through Monday) of that and I am so recharged it isn't funny. It's amazing how completely disconnecting can make you feel so much better. -nB
I realize the point you're trying to make, but in the USA whites don't always have the advantage. Specifically in the high tech industry, we are a minority (at least in my multinational company). Our Co. is so hot to get "minorities" in the door that there is an almost overt reverse discrimination. -nB

that's because it's a well known fact* that ter'rists hate Nascar. The code should be open source. That way nobody has an edge.
Normally I agree with you, but not this time. This bit of code is one of those things that a company develops to get an edge, either through efficiency in transactions, or built in arbitrage handling, etc. It should not be open source by mandate, as it is a private interest. It is not like voting SW where it is written for a government operation (elections) and as such should be open to inspection. If you called for a peer review to verify lack of fraud and such, I'd agree with you. But to force it to be open? No. -nB
Yeah, we all park as close as we can to the building. Hot as hell out here right now.
OTOH we do all take the stairs, and our campus is 6 or so buildings, with our division split between two of them, so we exercise by walking briskly to the meetings we are inevitably late for;)
