    Hmm, interesting story, but how likely is it that a keyboard would ever get repaired, with or without the legislation? We live in a throw-away society, and really only a tiny fraction of people know how to solder, let alone are willing to put effort into soldering something that could be replaced for $5. There are definitely pros and cons to every law. Do the pros outweigh the cons when you factor in actual human behavior?

    How is global warming a political sham? Politicians can somehow just wave their arms and move their mouths and suddenly the world heats up? I don't see politicians as having that kind of superpower. Or, do you instead believe in a giant conspiracy between all climate scientists and the politicians?

    I'm certainly not suggesting that we wait until we have 5 sigma confidence in the measurement before acting, but just pointing out that a commonly stated criterion for a particle physics "discovery" is 5 sigma or 99.99994 percent confidence.

    Very few men work as nurses. Is that a problem that needs to be solved?

    Yeah, it kinda is. It is an indication of the huge social pressures that all men face to "be a man" and do manly things. It isn't something that can be fixed by legislation, though.

    What kind of hardships you will face totally depends on details of your workplace and work. I mean, if you are developing for xbox live or something, you probably don't want to force Linux on your colleagues. If you are doing hardcore science, you probably are already using Linux. Do you have a lot of legacy applications? One important legacy app can screw up your transition.

    Cost effective indeed. If I were an insurance company, I would also find it cost effective to let a cancer patient die while taking homeopathic ampules rather than pay for expensive treatment.

    Could you use gallium instead? Granted, gallium is a lot more expensive than water, but if you are the type to spend $1500 on video cards, you clearly have money to burn.

    I don't agree with basing the tax on time held. That's just an extra pain to audit. A simple low flat tax on each trade will already stop HFT. Even with a tiny tax, trading multiple times per microsecond will add up very quickly.
