It's actually the opposite with the iPhone. In my house I get spotty AT&T reception. But if I have my phone in EDGE only mode, I usually will only drop a call if I go in the basement. With 3G turned on, if the Phone decides it wants to use the 3g signal when I am calling someone or receiving a call, it is almost guaranteed I will drop the call. The phone refuses to switch back to EDGE.
even in a residential area its not that big of a deal to have unsecured wifi. Its no different than locking yours doors. I live in a fairly safe neighborhood so I don't worry about locking my car a lot of the time. Just like I don't bother having security on my Access point because when my friends come over its a pain in the ass to remember the key and have them enter it. Sure its not the best idea, but its not like its some horrible thing either. Some people aren't paranoid.
PS... Posted anonymously because i don't want you creapers on the internet to come to my house and hack all my computers and steal stuff out of my car
The difference is that you will not get sued for using diesel in your petrol engine. (in fact many people do just this and mix a little diesel in with their normal gasoline thinking that it will help clean their fuel injectors or increase mileage or something? Its not really true but people do it anyways)
There's no way 8.7 is really the average speed, thats the highest possible teir from my local cable company. Unless like ISP's and hosting providers and other business customers are included, which doesn't seem like a good measurement
Except think of it from their point of view: unlike an all-you-can-eat buffet which the more you eat the more it costs the restaurant, digital downloads of songs already paid to record and produce cost (near) nothing (sure there are bandwidth costs but that is fractions of pennies per song).
So as long as Apple/the music companies make the surcharge more than the average amount of songs downloaded per ipod, they are making money. So everyone downloads 50 gigs of music for their ipod... so what? Then apple and the record companies have still made more than they would have if everyone only downloaded an average of 20 songs per ipod. It is really similar to the idea of radio (internet and traditional); the station pays a flat fee and can play any music they want.
I think it might be a geographic thing? Because everyone I know uses AIM. When you say IM name or anything like that its understood your talking about AIM.
I noticed this happening on my connection in the cleveland area (strongsville) a few weeks ago. But I promptly disabled it when i realized it was screwing with my intranet domain resolution. (i.e. ping basementserver would come back with roadrunners IP. extremely agrivating)
In heavy traffic is when turn signals are the most important! Open highways with noone around or signals with left turn only lanes, right turn only lanes, stop signs in developments with noone else around, thats when turn signals are really unimportant.
Why do all thinkpads look like they are from 1995? I know they are targeting businesses, and are great laptop's, but seriously, that laptop looks the same as my 300mhz Pentium 2 thinkpad
I was hoping this wouldn't be the case. I wonder if I could just pirate a copy of the Windows version and use the CD key form the mac port of Call of Duty 4. I was about to buy COD4 for my MacBook Pro but if theres a Mac port around the corner I might wait. I don't want to be stuck with horrible performance though when I can always boot into Windows using bootcamp.
Oh I completely agree. I just re-read the parent and he wasn't saying quite what I thought he was saying. I was just trying to say that comparing the MPG of a 10 or 20 year old car with one from today really isn't fair because off all the new safety features.
well he completely got rid of any GPL notices. The fact that it was a PHP script meant that the source was there but he was trying to sell "licenses." I would have no problem with someone adding features to my script and releasing it as a derivative work. I'm obviously not trying to make money off of this seeing as I released it for free in the first place. Its the fact that he pretended it was his, gave me no credit, and tried to make money off of it without doing anything besides backspacing a few lines in the code.
Don't forget all the mandated safety equipment that escort doesn't have (6 airbags, crumple zones, etc.). All that adds weight which uses more gas. Not to mention all cars have to "compete" with massive SUV's like Hummers now. If you get T-boned by a soccer mom driving a Hummer you have a significantly lower chance of surviving than someone in a 2007 Focus which gets 35ish mpg
I spend a lot of time writing a PHP script for myself and decided to release it to the public. I think I threw a GPL notice on it but the source was included either way due to it being PHP. Well I put it up on my website and a few months later go back to update it. I search online and find someone selling it for $50. He refused to take it down when I asked him to which really added insult to injury. (He claimed he downloaded it from limewire therefore its fair game? wtf?) Considering he was actively advertised "his program" (mine with my name and stuff backspaced) he got a lot more people to download it then I did even though mine was free. I eventually got him to take it down by sending a cease and desist notice. (Thanks for the template RIAA)
It is for things like computers and TV's. We don't just hand a laptop to a customer and go here you go pay for it up front. We are taught to ask the customer if he wants any accessories or firedog installation services and things like that. We then get "credit" for the sale (no, not commission, it just goes on our record that we made the sale).
It does seem like there should be a better way to confirm the purchases were made (maybe embedded RFID tages?) . But I'm just saying that asking for a receipt is not some rediculous protocol designed to invade privacy and disregard rights. It is merely an attempt to cut down on "shrink" (stuff getting either lost or stolen, in this case stolen)
I work at this circuit city, and the cop who came is apparently friends with the store director. I know I have seen him shopping at the store a lot and will often talk with a few of the managers.
I can't get to the blog because it is slashdotted, but I work at this circuit city. I was not working when this happened, but I overheard my manager talking about it. Apparently this guy is filing assault charges against him.
Although being arrested for not showing a drivers license is ridiculous, that doesn't really have to do with circuit city and just shows the ineptitude of the Brooklyn police. What doesn't make sense though is that the guy refused to show his receipt to the Loss Prevention Associate. That is there entire job, to check the receipt of everyone who walks out the door. In our store there are registers all throughout the building. There is no way to know if someone actually purchased an item without checking the receipt. What does this guy expect, that we should allow anyone who doesn't feel like showing their receipt to walk freely out the door? Our store has a ton of theft (occasionally our entire stock of a new rap CD will go missing on the first day, and a couple days ago we lost a laptop computer).
Now the fact that the loss prevention associate apparently physically held the guy from leaving is a different matter entirely. That is defiantly a no-no and Circuit City emphases this. I am not sure who was the LPA at the time, but its possible they were new (we have a lot of new employees right now) which would explain his actions somewhat.
I just don't understand the attitude of this Micheal guy (i assume thats his name, thats what his domain name is) that he shouldn't have to show his receipt. Oh and Micheal, if you read this, I would like to know more about what happened, if you wouldn't mind responding or messaging me or something with the names of the people involved.
While where getting rid of keys, lets also get rid of:
Scroll Lock -- what the hell does it even do?
Print screen -- noone uses it, it doesnt even print the screen (ya i know copys it thats what software screen capture software is for)
Insert -- just make it an option in the edit menu or something
Num Lock -- most people never use it, although i can see its use
while were at it, we should make a standard for laptop keyboards. Some laptops have rediculous keyboard layouts, with things like the windows key where the shift key goes (wow thats annoying, always losing focus of the window while typing)
what about all the people who own a spyware-riddled dell/HP and dont know how to work it? The advantage a console has is the 'just works' mentality. no installing, just plug it in.

Flash memory (like that used in the iPhone) and SSDs are two different beasts.
False.
WILL THE PUNDITS OF THE WORLD PLEASE STOP EQUATING "OPEN SOURCE" WITH "COMMUNISM"!!!
(and yes, I am intentionally shouting--I don't even own a "caps lock" key, <adding some filler here to get past the lameness filter...>)
You know its funny that you say that because I often think that people don't realize how close Open Source is to communism. The difference is that you will not get sued for using diesel in your petrol engine. (in fact many people do just this and mix a little diesel in with their normal gasoline thinking that it will help clean their fuel injectors or increase mileage or something? No, thats not really true. A car can be tuned inefficiently causing the gas not to combust completely.

This would be great, except get rid of the whole pin code idea. Just swipe your card before you park and then swipe it when you leave.
