  1. Re:Coolness. on New Copyright Licence Allows Remixing In UK · · Score: 2, Informative

As a remixer/producer myself, I know a little about this...

Remixing in the U.S. is complicated; perhaps moreso than sampling. If a record label pays you to do a remix, then you obviously don't have to pay any royalties on it. The problem is that labels won't generally let you release a remix unless you own rights to do so. Which is expensive. If you release a remix for free(on the internet for instance), and you do not own the liscence, you can still get in trouble because it's still enough to constitute infringement/piracy.

This story is the product of what we in the journalism industry call a "slow news day".

But seriously, what I think the article is hinting towards(although masks it through mountains of hype) is that there is a lot of undiscovered talent in the world - across industries. These people are like the underdogs now, but with help from middle to upper management, can bring their new ideas to life.
So let's not jump to conclusions about who is and isn't going to shape society, hmm?

Like it or not, since 9/11 we've seen some pretty wack stuff. Random searches? Patriot Act? Holding without just cause? What the hell is that? More and more, the Constitution has become something that only the rich can afford. In the meantime, those who are a day in the sun darker than those in power suffer because what was once regarded as "rights" are being thrown in the toilet. In the name of what? Some crusty white zealot's blood war.

So when you use false information to avoid SPAM or protect your privacy are you committing fraud?

Yes. The problem lies within the reality that the gov't has the spammers' back-we're talking the economy here. Providing false information-whether it be for registration info or for good prices on canadian viagra and whatnot- is still fraud. Spammers just have enough money to get the gov't to "look the other way".
