Actually, the MES we're talking about here is McLaren Electronic Systems, who have a lot of experience in manufacturing electronic components for all sorts of racing cars.
Don't we have a moderation system in place to highlight the best comments? Why the "mega"-moderation?
Because the way Slashdot discussion system works, many +5 comments have little to do with the story itself -- they can quite often be comments on comments on comments (just like this one). The "mega"-moderation would point out the best topical comments to a story that generated good comments.
On the other hand, it could just as well be that they're running low on *real* story submissions and had to make something up:7
...just like any solution used would have an instant effect on the climate.
Adaptation doesn't necessarily mean that a plant would become more resistant to cold or evolve to need less sunlight. At first, both the plants and the animals would migrate to warmer/lighter areas.
The whole point of having a computer is to free yourself from paper.
No, it isn't. The whole point of having a computer is to make tedious and repetitive tasks easier. The "paperless office" hype was just a way to promote the use of computers ("cut costs by reducing the amount of paper used"). Or maybe it was just the standard answer given to business people by computer salesmen: "What can you do with it? Well, uh, I don't know, you'll have to spend a lot less money on paper?"
So why would you take a step back and try to digitally emulate a system that is antiquated?
Because this is what they're used to. First GUI-s used the file cabinet metaphor because this is what they were mostly used for -- filekeeping. The people using them were used to having huge file cabinets around. These days, computers are more and more being used for creating stuff, not only archiving it; the people doing this kind of work are used to having to work behind a desk full of stacks of paper. Eventually, this will change. Someone will come up with a more efficient way of interacting with information. But people first have to get used to using a computer (twenty years of personal computing might seem like a long time, but it isn't). A familiar environment will make it much easier for them to wrap their minds around this new thing.
A computer offers endless opportunities for organizing and storing data, I see this as a step back.
A computer can only do what you want it to do. If you don't know what a "new" interface should look like, then "emulating a system that is antiquated" is the first logical step in developing one.
When it works it is astonishing in its results, and it generates acutally beauty and grace, when it doesn't work it results in surprisingly uninspired play. It is almost chaotic.
That's because it is mostly chaotic, for two reasons. First of all, everyone expects them to win. Secondly, all the players have such big egos that it's very difficult to make them work as a team. In most games, they manage to keep the play together, but whenever they meet tougher resistance than expected, they risk falling apart completely as everyone, even the defense players, will suddenly start trying to win the game all by themselves. This is why they lost the World Cup final against France in 1998. This is also why they sucked so bad (and barely managed to win) in the first game against Croatia. It also seems that this time, their big egos, might yet again cost them the title.
IIRC, in 2001, Brazil were losing to practically everyone. They were really struggling in the WC qualification rounds, and barely made it to the finals. The reason for this seems to have been, well, team politics. The players were playing with their egos, not their feet, a new coach was hired after every other match (the public wanted more from them than they could ever reasonably deliver), etc. Yet, they still got their act together for the finals and won.
I guess it goes to show that talent isn't everything.
I'm not a native Russian speaker, but this is what I gathered (FTA):
1) Majordomo.ru is a GoDaddy reseller.
2) The problem seems to be that GoDaddy claim to have acted upon complaints filed by Spamhouse.org. Neither of the two complaints they cited were, however, about Majordomo.ru's customers.
Attention-seeking isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is, in fact, completely natural for a human to seek for attention. The real problem here is that it's difficult to enforce social norms by technical means (Slashdot is a good example of this) and some people like to take advantage of this, of the fact that it's only a game.
However, this doesn't mean that griefing is necessarily bad. In many cases, the line between what's acceptable and what isn't can be rather blurry. Something I might find acceptable (the GHSC case, for example) you might consider to be less so.
"We" must have invented the concept of the Roman Empire, the French Revolution, and the Crusades as well.
Who says we didn't? It could just as well be, that the Roman Empire and the Crusades were made up and all the stuff they told you in school was just a load of crap crafted by 17th century historians.

At first I thought it was a collaborative project to decode dog language. Alas, I was mistaken.

What, like this? Or this?
Why the fuck do you let your kid read Slashdot?
In these days of Open Source fanboyism, nobody's scratching an itch anymore; they're all masturbating.

They'll have to adapt to the change -- which, I've been told, they're quite good at.
Is this like selling air?

Ahh, but your Pimptop doesn't have Slashdot on it!
Why does it seem like execs are suddenly leaving?
Because if the media didn't spin it that way, it wouldn't be news at all.

What a great way to celebrate my birthday!
Whatever.

Yes. Now you're getting it.
My ideal system would be an MMO with a 'Karma' system
You think this kind of system can't be abused? Well, think again.Attention-seeking isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is, in fact, completely natural for a human to seek for attention. Why must the concepts of "creationism" and "evolution" be mutually exclusive?
Because Evolution means man evolved from monkey, but God is not a monkey.
Let me guess, MS employees spend too much time astroturfing on /. instead of writing code.
So...have you ever been to a BSD concert? What do they sound like?
Well, I confirm it, and that's about as good a proof as Netcraft confirming it.
