    Just what i was thinking.
    I'll probably be modded flamebait, but what the freaking hell is this.
    Some guy invents a new term, writes a blog entry about it, posts it to slashdot, and of course it's accepted because it's news no one should be missing.

    We would end up with communism minus a government* or chaos :D
    *And even then we would have some inofficial government of people with more influence than others.

    I'm not trolling, I'm a heavy free soft user and a small dev but if freedom and endless mailinglist discussions would be everywhere that would be a serious issue for mankind

    The same fenomenon could be noticed in Europe (belgium at least)
    The msn status pages said the network was down but didn't give any reasons

    Look, I just want to create installers, I don't care about their source, and I definitely don't consider source a replacement for documentation or an open source licence an excuse to not have documentation.

    I remember a video from a presentation where it was mentioned that the doc's are being worked on, but as long as they aren't available I won't use the thing.

    I've been trying to get my feet wet with this WiX stuff, but really the documentation is extremely lacking.

    It looks neat but there's no way to find out the complex stuff without generating an xml from an msi or something.

    an on-off switch wouldn't be as nice as an uglyness filter.

    imagine walking through a busy street, lots of nice women, lots of less nice women. would you rather switch it off, or would you rather only see the goodlooking women naked.

    PS: I do realize I'll sound sexist. This started out as a joke, so I apologize beforehand.

    I still got one of those ATT globalysts running very nice (did cram in a few extra scsi disks) only IIRC mine is a 133mhz version.

    It's happily running debian for file, print, mail, dns, subversion, whatever server.

    The only things that were able to kill it so far were
    - apache
    - the combination of spamfilter/antivirus when there was loads of mail (eg coming back from a power failure i had to shut down the filters until the queue was cleared.
    I suppose that could be fixed with a little more ram (currently 32) but I'd rather be on the lookout for a more recent throwaway system.

    wouldn't the previous eruption have either blown away or solidified (with magma turning lava/rocks and locking other dust/loose rocks) most of those loose rocks by now?

    if a similar eruption happened, would you still have the problem of rocks coming at you at 300mph or would you be in a situation where the lava stalls before it can do a lot of damage?

    maybe your not the right person to ask, but you seemed educated

    I asked everybody in my house a question
    "who is more important, bill gates or linus torvalds"
    bill was the winner because none of the people knew "the other guy".

    It's more than clear bill has had more influence in our world at this moment than linus has (though linux/oss might influence the world to new business models, but thats tomorrow and maybe)

    No,

    flexwiki uses asp .NET which in theory you should be able to run on apache/mod_mono on some os'es (mono won't work on all platforms apache runs on afaik) but you're bound to run into some issues like case sensitivity or the path issues (\ vs /)

    The withdrawal symptoms from being disconnected depend a lot on what else you can do at the time.

    If i leave on a holiday for 2 weeks I always leave my laptop at home, and i never miss it because i am in a totally different environment.

    If I get disconnected on a rainy sunday on the other hand i'll be running around the house not knowing what to do

    most liunx virusscanners are aimed predominantly at windows viruses (ie scanning mail for windows clients or fileserving for them).
    There have been viruses for lin in the past, and i suppose those virus scanners, but i havent had anything detected on my boxes (using openantivirus, dunno if that's a good option)

    About firewalls:
    Firestarter (emerge firestarter i presume) is a very good option for newbie users

    # Pressing ctrl + D on firefox focuses the address bar, but doesn't highlight the text.

    You are using it on linux, highlighting would overwrite urls that might have been copied by selecting them and middle click would paste the wrong url

    it's even better than backspace, you can press alt and the forward or back arrow, so you can go forward too

    But security experts/amateurs (i count myself in the last category) often have a tendency to be a bit paranoid.

    Some servers who are under my control are up to date with patches, locked down etc, they weren't hacked so far.
    The thing is, most of the servers in our company i have no control over, sometimes NT boxes unpatched for years. Neither of these got hacked too.

    If you ask me or a "security expert" if something is a risk, we'll allways say yes, because it "is". In the real world plenty of people who don't care get along just fine.

    (i hope you get the point after a few beers after my last day of work)
