If you have the ability to do thumbnails somewhere, you could zip a bunch in a folder (tar.gz or PKZIP or whatever) and use FreeCache to save bandwidth - they only cache stuff over 5 MB, though, so you'd have to have a way for people to see samples and choose which set of images they want before they download 'em.
CSI? Heard of it, but never seen it. And I imagine if it's good enough to hear, it's possible to filter. Better than nothing, but it's not for the truly paranoid.
Which is why I carry mace, rather than guns. Even if there's a 1% chance of shooting off my genitals...
'Course, my uncle sprayed himself with bear spray (uber mace) once... that was nasty.
The other reason I don't carry a firearm is that I don't have the finger strength or dexterity to operate it, or hold on to it if an attacker tries to get it from me.
inside-a-hotel with blured-face and altered-voice routine.
It's fairly common knowledge that that kind of anonymity means squat. In a hotel? Figure out where the interviewer was that day, and find out who else went in and out. Blurred face? If it was done electronically, and the person didn't keep absolutely still, it only takes a few frames to recover the "lost" information. Altered voice? There's only a few algorithms that are used to do that... just apply 'em in reverse until you find one that matches, and you've got the voice.
Besides which, if we don't trust the government, why should we trust any idiot who we can't ID, whether it's this guy, or "Mr. X" in a ski-mask talking about the whole Leonard Peltier thing, etc. While I sympathize with LP, and while I don't trust the government, those who say the government is lying or not trustworthy lose credibility when they do crap like this.
I agree with your post... that just cracked me up. Whether it's because you were overstating your case, or because I have a juvenile sense of humor, I don't know.
Until the tracker itself becomes overloaded, which happened a few times with my FC2. OTOH, BitTorrent has very nice, very automatic auto-resume capabilities.
Well, given that the pictures were used to humiliate and threaten the prisoners, and that violating a POW's privacy, especially while humiliating/threatening them is against the Geneva Conventions... more than a year.
Besides which, he had an obligation to blow the whistle.
Forgot to make it "plain old text" rather than HTML. Sorry; here it is, corrected.

[Cassons song intro]
When someone makes a move
Of which we don't approve,
Who is it that always intervenes?
U.N. and O.A.S.,
They have their place, I guess,
But first, we'll send the Marines!
We'll send them all we've got,
John Wayne and Randolph Scott,
Remember those exciting fighting scenes?
To the shores of Tripoli,
But not to Mississippoli,
What do we do? We send the Marines!
For might makes right,
Until they've seen the light,
They've got to be protected,
All their rights respected,
'Till somebody we like can be elected.
The members of the corps
All hate the thought of war,
They'd rather kill them off by peaceful means.
Stop calling it aggression,
We hate that expression!
We only want the world to know
That we support the status quo,
They love us everywhere we go,
So when in doubt,
Send the Marines!
Please don't use the word "illegal" in this context. It propagates the myth that there is such a thing as "international law" or "laws of war." There isn't, and it's a mistake to imply that there is.
Number one, it's semantics. You're missing the point. Number two, the US Constitution, and the basic laws of most other countries, declare that any treaty ratified by the country's governing body shall be considered the law of the land.
Besides which, the ICC and the Hague are still around - as Milosevic is discovering.
Not well enough. The charges against Spc. Sivits were valid, but he was tried in a Special Court Martial, which, as I understand it, is like a misdemeanor court, rather than a General Court Martial.
He did cooperate, and has agreed to testify against other soldiers, but giving him a one year sentence (the maximum that can be given by a Special Court Martial) and a dishonorable discharge is way too light. Seems like in our rush to show we weren't treating this lightly, we... treated it lightly.
Really? And I guess it would be impossible to write a virus that could log on to said shell account and send out spam?
As long as people are able to send email freely, spam will exist. There is really no tech solution; we have to look for social solutions - convincing people that spam is not something to buy from, sending junk mail to guys like Ralsky, and so on. It's the tragedy of the commons.
I love having a stand-alone browser, and I think it's healthy to have that kind of separation. But I'm wondering when they're going to make the Mozilla browser Firefox? (the best I've ever heard from Firesomething, by the way, was "Mozilla Lightningnarwhal")
That ol' Janx Spirit!
It's not like you could get any karma out of it. The mod system is semi-broken.

eXtensible Programming sounds too much like eXtreme Programming.
Maybe they can call it Extensible Fox?
... as the guys at my local paintball place, we're in big trouble.
unreversible stream
That's an irreversible stream. Or have you been adding random data to your slashdot posts?

Before they got caught, or after? That would seem to be the important thing here.

Set your settings to +1, Nested, and fax these comments in to the FCC when the discussion is closed.

You had me up until: "on the contrary, you may shoot off your genitals.". At that point, I just started snickering.
Like Uru and Myst? That's a market that I think will (or at least, should) replace it.
I loved Lemmings, though. None of the ports/freeware ripoffs I've seen even come close.

Do they still teach hand-to-hand combat in the military? Not just to special forces, but to the standard infantry?
Inquiring minds want to know.
You misspelled monorail.
