  1. Real Dolls, anyone? on CG Idols - Human Not Required · · Score: 3, Informative

Heh. I saw this photo and couldn't help but think, "Hmm, Real Dolls?"

  2. A Question for Wil on Wil Wheaton playing for EFF · · Score: 5, Informative

I enjoyed watching the show (WL), but I've gotta ask: Was Roxann just putting on an act, or is she truly as much of a colossal bitch as she seemed? My jaw dropped when watching her "exiting interrogation".

  3. Get the XBOX Bundles! on XBox Released · · Score: 2

You should have pre-ordered them, but you can still get in line to get your XBox Bundles.

  4. Yopy at Comdex 2001 Las Vegas (right now) on Linux Yopy Handheld Preview · · Score: 2

If things haven't changed, there is a booth at the Las Vegas Comdex 2001 according to a pop-up spawned by this page. You can read the details here.

And also according to this announcement, the Yopy WILL be released, allegedly at the end of November!

  5. Which Dictionary are you using? on Real Time Gnutella Visualization · · Score: 1

I've got a Merriam-Webster dictionary which explains the etymology of "pornography" as "Gk pornographos writing of harlots", the definition of which is not nearly as broad as yours:
the depiction of erotic behavior designed primarily to cause sexual excitement.
    The online Merriam-Webster dictionary concurs.

Similarly, school photos of your kid in your wallet constitutes child pornography.

Now you really need to review the proper definition of the word before you tell someone that, or risk getting a fat lip (or worse).

  8. Lots of great GPL products out there, but... on CIOs Band Together Against Paying For Software Bugs · · Score: 2
... these companies should look for the right ones. As an example, Sendmail was mentioned. But shouldn't they really be using qmail?

I think it's great that companies embrace OS projects and software, but at the same time, they should be careful in which apps they are running. For example, you'd be better off if you didn't run wuFTP in favor of something more secure such as NcFTP (okay, it's not free or GPL, but still...) or PureFTP.

Does anyone know of a site which can make recommendations for one type of server app over another based on security, specifically to replace those types of server apps that have been shipped with so many distros for way too long? There are so many things that people really shouldn't run anymore, like wuftp, sendmail, inetd, and so on.

  9. Legislation - There's some Hope on TeleZapper - A Way to Avoid Telemarketers? · · Score: 2
A bill has passed (warning: PDF file) on Aug 30, 2001 by Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum that allows Wisconsin customers to register in an "opt-out" list from which telemarketers must filter their call lists. It's going to be implemented some time in 2002. I can't wait.

Try calling your Rep and ask for similar legislation!

The cynic in me now says that numerous Slashdotters will now come up with hundreds of silly reasons why this will be useless and/or not work. Still, I hope they're wrong, because this will be a great relief if it works.

  10. Twice the burned-out CPUs? on AMD Athlon MP 1800+ Processor Review · · Score: 1, Troll

If you read Tom's Hardware, you may have seen this fantastic article and brilliant video, which shockingly demonstrates how AMD vs Pentium chips cope with heat emergencies. Considering the disastrous results with so many of the AMD chips, I'd be hesitant to buy anything OTHER than a Pentium until AMD can conclusively show that their chips are "smart" when faced with heat emergencies (heatsink fan stops, heatsink falls off?)

  11. Very Original, CmdrTaco. on Ask Wil Wheaton Anything · · Score: 5, Informative
This very funny interview with Wil Wheaton was submitted last week, but was promptly rejected. And suddenly you've got your very own idea to interview him. I'm so very impressed by your originality.

So for the uninformed, CmdrTaco is a dick. And the above interview is inclined to be far more informative and funny than anything that will appear here. Go read it.

  16. Let's talk about "OLD" on What Do You Do With Old Computer Parts? · · Score: 3, Redundant
Really. What about those of us who shamefully have a 386 or 486 sitting on a shelf in the back room? How do we dispose of these? Chances are that a school can't use them, nor can anyone else. And if I'm not mistaken, the lead in the circuit boards would leach out if in a landfill, so it's not environmentally friendly to just toss them. But I'd really rather not pay someone to recycle my old hardware or CRTs. I know that the lead in CRTs can be recycled as well.

Anyhow, does anyone know of a way to get rid of / recycle the really old hardware without paying someone to take it?

However, I've long thought about installing/using one of the *BSD variants, simply because they are often touted as being even more secure than linux. Why might the NSA not create "SE-BSD"? Wouldn't that likely be even more beneficial?
