Hopefully it turns out just like the VHS vs. Beta war of the late 70's/early 80's. Beta is better quality and deserves the title it so successfully....WAIT A MINUTE!!
Unfortunately for real people M$ have "acquired" so many other businesses and business, uh, (I don't want to say "solutions") that I don't think they'd be fucked - just no longer a monopoly. They'd be a regular business, which would be hilarious because it would be so unacceptable to them!
You're right though - Balmer is a drooling moron. If hardware were cheaper, poorer people could afford to pirate software along with the rest of the world.
I think it's almost time we built our new internet, free as it once was, and let the governments and business sectors of the world overtake the old, "broken" (read: censored) version.
PS: In our new one, we should use at least gigabit ethernet for every connection...
Why bother rating the games otherwise? People check ID for movies (that don't allow people to maim and kill for kicks with the same addictiveness and exposure as games have). Why not?
This is EXACTLY what I came into this article to post. While I fully support open software (in both theory and practice) I sometimes feel that because there are a few too many options in certain areas, we lack either usability with other options or we lack other options at all in a given field.
Here we have some developers that are looking to work on an open video codec, and then there's ogg's open video codec that IMHO just needs a few more developers to get the ball rolling quick enough to have people really take notice (I still have yet to see a vid file encoded with the ogg vid codec...). I think FOSS needs a little soliderity in terms of software support from developers.
On an average day, you're lucky to receive about 200 watts/m2 of sun power
That's a whole pantload of power because you're moving! Hear me out: if you drive at about 80 km/h, that's 80000m x 200W! W000t! I think I just solved our energy problems!
Don't forget the OTHER quake movie they were going to release using CGI characters from the Q3: Arena engine... That was AFTER they were going to make a live-action quake 1 movie!!
Is cervical cancer different from other cancer? I'm not trolling here, I'm genuinely confused. Why mention that over other forms of cancer - is there something about this research that limits the types of cancer that can be fought with the resulting drugs?
Actually I've played all the way through Halo; which is why I think it is a HUGE Doom rip-off. Don't try your "you're a troll who's just a ranting fanboy" shit on me. I've also finished Half-Life, about which I feel exactly the same.
The story in Doom is that a corporation screwed around too much and opened a gateway to the horrors you have to destroy. (Half-Life, an exact rip-off of such). Halo is close enough, and you can whine that it has a story that matters compared to Doom, but all I remember of Halo is running through dark corridor after dark corridor killing the same guys over and over again until I finished it.
As for someone who thought I said Doom was the first FPS, come on. Re-read my original post. I'm not a deluded troll here, I'm a seasoned gamer who happened to speak my mind on the internet like the rest of you.
Generally speaking, I've found quake 3 to be a lot snappier in linux as well and I'm expecting similar results with Doom 3; although you may need the same specs to keep it from complaining, it'll probably run better.
Ha ha. Ya got me. Doom is obviously the ORIGINAL original, but technically Doom 3 is just the first one again with the new engine and graphics... you get what I meant. Plot-wise, amigo.
Upon reflection, I guess my parent post was off-topic, I've just always gotten a little frustrated with music, movies, games, etc that aren't creatively original in any way. I apologize; however, I still feel that Oasis, the Matrix, and Halo/Half-Life can kiss my Beatles, Neuromancer, Doom-loving ass.
I'll stick with Doom 3. How many "demonic aliens are taking over and I am the only surviving space marine who can save Earth from the horror" FPS games can our nerves take (in the dark, no less)? I'll stick with the original.
That's easy - Clinton was a Democrat, Bush isn't. The republicans will do anything to win.
Poor JFK.

I like your style clown-shoes, but isn't OSS all about choice? I agree with you, but let the proverbial baby have his bottle; shit, if I wanted NO choice I'd use windows!
Here's my favorite:
First we state that women require time and money:
Women = Time x Money
And as we all know "time is money"
Time = Money
Therefore by substituting Money for Time we get:
Women = Money x Money
Women = (Money)^2
And because "money is the root of all evil" we therefore can state:
Money = (Evil)^1/2
And Since
(Money)^2 = Women
Then (Money)^2 = Evil
And we are forced to conclude by substituting "women" for "(money)^2" from above that:
Women = Evil
Can't argue with mathematical proof!

Then, when things are going well, we can create a gas stop at Mars (maybe a motel too) so we can get to Saturn's moons easier...
Beginning OpenGL is a great book for getting you started in game programming...
I would put windows on Mac hardware in some alternate dimention...That would be like squeezing diarrhea onto your pancakes!

Crap. I rushed in to post "oblig: FAQ off!" to find not only was it there, it was the first post. Reminds me of my girl trouble...
I knew they hosted the file but I didn't think they were the ones who coded it. I guess I stand corrected. Thanks!
Actually, id didn't make GLQuake. But thanks to whoever did!

How very, very cool of Apress. Nice to see - now I'll probably buy the book to show them the GNU FDL can work - you can make money with open works.
You can't put a price on cute.
