  1. but who takes the credit? on AOL Will Not Support Sender-ID · · Score: 1

Since when is Microsoft known to make sense? :P I totally agree though; if they all worked together towards one universal solution, things could be done much quicker, much more efficiently and more reliable. But then MS (or AOL, or Yahoo) won't hold the monopoly on that and probably won't be able to charge (as much) money for it. I think they thought about that idea, but then arises the obvious question: whos idea will be used? Every one of them is trying to make their solution the standard. Especially since when this will work (i have no doubt about the 'if' part), it'll be such a huge claim (*the* final solution for spam), that whoever came with the idea will be popular forever .... Well, at least until the next generation of spam arrives that somehow finds a way to defeat their solution.

Let's assume that the slashdot editors are really going to inform a webmaster about the traffic that will soon hit his site. What if the webmaster says "thanks but no thanks"? Should the entire story then be cancelled? How many times do you see a website being slashdotted? I agree it's a pity if you get a huge bandwidth-bill, but if you don't want people to see what you put online, don't put it online in the first place. And if you do expect alot of people, make sure you can afford the traffic (both financially and technically).

I wouldn't, but this is interesting though as the support on Win98 expired some time ago. So they say Win98 is supported ... but if you have a problem with it, they can (and probably will) say something like "Sorry, you're using an older OS. Upgrade to WinXP, else we can't properly diagnose the problem."

Doesn't Hz stand for frequency, 1 per second? How can this be 1.5 'events' per second per second?

You're wrong. It can be better if:

    - it looks the same and works the same, but:
    - doesn't crash nearly as often as windows
    - it is (almost) free!
    - it (almost) doesn't have virii

And Apple has the guts to be different. Good for them, but it still costs alot (software/hardware), while you have to agree that Linux is free (i'm not talking about the commercial apps).

Maybe Apple's interface is technically better, but (like the parent poster said) if you want to bring it to the masses, use something people are already used to. That way the switch to a linux desktop won't be such a big difference.

I agree. Radio signals, light, are things you use but not consume (for lack of a better word, excuse my english). I know that over here in Holland there's indeed a law for this. If something is published in the ether, everyone able to receive it is allowed to do so.

However, if you use bandwidth you're not simply using it as you would use a radio signal. Your intrusion (because that's what it is) is causing other users' bandwidth to decrease. Not only that, but you're active on a network that you shouldn't have access to, which could be considered illegal. I'm not familiar with US laws.

I didn't mean you should uprade your kernel every time a new version comes out. The same goes for windows. You don't upgrade to a newer version every time either, right? For my firewall i still use 2.2.x series and don't bother to upgrade because it's of no use. Only times i upgraded the kernel was when a root exploit was fixed in a later version. I'm saying that if you switch from windows to because then you don't need to upgrade, is nonsense.

Right. I can only assume you're using Linux now, and I apologize if i'm wrong. So you probably never have to: upgrade your kernel, upgrade applications or do an fsck. If this is the reason why you abandoned windows, it's a silly one. As far as i know, only consoles (Nintendo, PS1/2 & Co.) don't require updates. Everything else does.
