  1. Re:What is art? on Are Videogames Art? · · Score: 1

True, however within the same shadow of doubt, there must lie the doubt of your own doubt. Who's to say the piece, no matter what the content, couldn't strike a chord with even one singular viewer on Earth? Does this validate nearly all objects on Earth as 'art'? Yes. That's when it enters the realm of total subjective discretion. To 'connect', or 'not connect' is your perrogative, but to discount it's possible effects on any viewer at any moment in history is simply nearsighted. That's just my opinion, but I feel it's sound.

Because it may inspire thought and intellectual discourse that would otherwise go uninitiated. I see no reason to attack personally, the minds and hearts behind those works who have inspired such discourse in others.

personally, I'm along with the evolutionist majority here at slashdot, but I feel that celebrating this "victory" would come with the added cost of lowering ourselves to the ways of the soccermom evangelists who raise such a stink about the issue in the first place. It's all of our jobs and informed citizens to keep our minds open. Sure we may disagree with creationism, but to bar our children from seeing both sides of the debate would seem like a disservice to their growth more than anything.

  9. just my view on Disney to Make Toy Story 3 Without Pixar · · Score: 2, Insightful

Ok, so we're basically all in agreement that pixar is what's keeping disney afloat, but honestly, what sets them apart from any other highend studio, other than that amazing name recognition that came from being spawned from Disney in the first place? I think with Disney's assets, they should be able to get top notch production work. The look may differ slightly seeing as renderman, as well as marionette and their 3rd piece of software (the name escaped me) is proprietary software designed by pixar, thus, the liscences are retained by pixar. So in the end, I doubt there will be much mixing and mingling between Disney and Pixar from here on out, but there will be a new "3rd party" if you will, in the big screen 3d wars of Disney, and Dreamworks. Who knows, maybe severing the ties of disney will allow pixar to put their talents to some more adult features (not that kind of adult you pervs) overall, good things will come from all, there's no doubt in my mind.

  10. I was in the same boat on Art Tips For Programmers? · · Score: 3, Insightful

You must first be an artist, before you are a digital artist. Learn the fundamentals of the work you're trying to accomplish, if your area is in logo design, research effective logos, get a sketchbook, and jot down any ideas that come to mind. Don't be afraid to venture from the digital realm, that's where the magic happens. Let yourself design on paper, and create and articulate in the computer. (I've spent the past year at art school overcoming that very concept) good luck with your passions

I'm not going to rip you to pieces for your rant, I'm just going to attribute it to your utter lack of understanding that within your given subject, enlies a massive subculture of cg ARTists, constantly experiementing with the very ideas you're talking about. Seeing as you relate all computer animation as the exact same concept, (and subsequently, using the exact same techniques) outlines your lack of understanding about any essence of compositing, lighting thoery, and the undercurrent of limitations contstantly being broken by CG artists worldwide. Using your logic, true photorealism would be a default setting in all applications. If you're going to argue your chosen topic again, you should do more research than simply watching toy story. This kind of mesh simplification has been around for years, in many of the high end programs such as Lightwave and Maya. All in all, not too groundbreaking, it just means that some scientists' computers can relax just a little bit more....
