As I haven't been following the news very closely, does anyone know where this $20 billion will go? Just like all other government revenue, it'll be put into the general fund under the jurisdiction of congress. The FCC won't get to keep any of it and will have to go ask congress if they want more money.

What I was thinking was just take the exhaust out of the smokestack, put it through some filters to remove the soot and whatever, and just dump it wholesale into a greenhouse/algae tank of suitable size, maybe with some sort of mechanism (not sure if this exists/is feasible) that removes the resulting oxygen and exhausts it/bottles it/whatever. That would provide the plants with a nice high-C02 environment (some of the greenhouses around here run a natural gas system to achieve similar) that would be kept warm by the waste heat.

I believe I remember an acquaintance of mine doing something similar with the exhaust from an gasoline generator and using it to grow fresh produce (tomatoes, IIRC) in the NWT.

Seriously, is anyone going to ever realize that unused RAM is wasted RAM? As long as it's smart about what's being swapped in and when, then so much the better. I'd love to see apps pre-cached. yes, i realize that. RAM is about 6 orders of magnitude faster than ram. but the problem is that vista doesn't seem to want to de-cache that stuff when i'm actually doing something that requires that RAM. when it's dumping my current working files to the swap for no easily discernible, something is screwy. granted, obvious solution is disable the swap (which fixes that problem), but i don't like doing that as it's helpful for catching leaks.

the memory arrangement should really have 3 "pools" of memory:

    1. free (should be fairly low. immediately available ram for small/urgent requests. a percent or two of the total ram should be good, though it should be adjustable. anytime some of this ram is used, some is taken from the freeable pool ASAP to replenish this. any requests larger than this will have to wait for the freeable ram to be freed.)

    2. freeable (being used for caching. will be rapidly flushed when needed for something.)

    3. in use (ram actively in use by something other than the caching.)

350 millirads is 3.5 milligrays, or about a chest X-ray. significantly less harmful actually, as uranium emits alpha radiation, which can't even penetrate skin.

changing clothes immediately wouldn't be necessary, though washing hands would be a good idea, as ingesting it is a bad idea, as internal alpha radiation is more harmful, along with uranium being a toxic heavy metal.
