    sounds a bit like my car ('93 plymouth acclaim)

    if you're starting it on cold weather and it doesn't stay running, you can't get it to start again without taking the key out, then putting it back in and trying again. if you don't do that, it'll just turn, but not fire.

    my mechanic is baffled too. my personal theory is that when the engine dies, it kills the fuel system until you "reset" it by removing the key.

    I'd imagine the keyword is "selling", as in "offering for money".

    Most religions seem to give away their teachings. There's an interesting multi-religion group that gathers at my college every few months and hands out their books (bibles, korans, Tanakhs, etc.) for free.

    hmm. all 2wire stuff I've dealt with use a separate pseudo-random numeric string as the default password (also as the default WEP/WPA key). the number is right next to the serial number though.

    the local cable co (shaw) does similar silliness up here. they've got caps ranging from 10GB (on 256k/128k) up to 150GB(on 25Mb/1Mb), though they are pretty selective about the enforcement of those caps.

    i was under the impression that it doesn't cause more poor solder joints, it just makes them harder to notice. the nice toxic solder makes it easy due to the shiny vs. dull difference, whereas the difference is much less dramatic with lead-free solder.

    what ISP are you referring to?

    of the 3 major ones around here (Saskatchewan):

    Sasktel DSL - unlimited transfers for all bandwidth tiers, and i know people who have tested this by deliberately maxing out their connections 24x7 for months on end.

    Access DSL - advertised as unlimited for all bandwidth tiers. don't know anyone who uses it though, so i don't know if that has been tested.

    Shaw cable - caps range from 10GB/month to 150GB/month, depending on the bandwidth tier (ranging from 256/128Kb to 25/1Mb), though they tend to be pretty selective about the enforcement of said caps. i know people who regularly blow well past the cap without a peep, while others get a phone call as soon as they go 1 byte over the cap.

    I think your numbers are a bit off.

    60GB/15Mbps=32000 seconds, or 533 minutes, or 8 hours, 53 minutes of full usage to exceed the cap.

    It's should be obvous to anyone that anytime a carrier tampers with the traffic on its network in any way they should lose thier common carrier status. cable providers have never had common carrier status. DSL providers used to have common carrier status, but they don't anymore.

    what they should lose is their DMCA safe harbour status.

    gas prices here (southern Saskatchewan) have been over $4/gallon for awhile now. currently sitting at 1.12/litre (4.23/gallon)

    it sucks as the mileage for my little sedan ('93 plymouth acclaim, 2.5L inline 4) is sitting below 20, due to all the idling that comes with winter weather.

    sure, they can use that to identify that filesharing is going on, being as encryption or no, the transfers have to happen in a certain way defined by whatever protocol is being used, but AFAICT, there is no way to tell WHAT is being shared, and by extention, whether what is being shared is copyrighted and, if so, whether it is being shared with permission.

    simple, they make tons of money overselling. they love people who pay for, say, a 5MB pipe and only use it for checking their emails and looking up recipes and whatever.

    if they switched to an actual-transfers system, they'd lose all kinds of money on those people.

    2. Re-processing helps a lot with that problem. it shrinks the necessary storage period by several orders of magnitude.

    3. No idea at the moment. there's about 4 million tonnes economicly minable right now, and another 35 million known, but not economically viable yet.

    4. Canada and Australia are the largest producers, having about half of known reserves between them. Fairly stable, friendly countries, I would think.
