there're plenty of statistics on this, just that the anti-gaming zealots just omit them from their rants, and almost no one is able to correct them, as they tend to have much more clout in the world of public opinion, due to the fact they seem to be routinely on TV and other such forms of media.

IMO, communism is the best form on government in theory . but in practise, it tends to result in very bad leaders in charge of everything.

and, in essence, Marx's basic idea of communism was that it would come about via the natural evolution of society, and thus, since all previous communist governments were forced upon the people, they weren't true communist government.

not to brag, but Canada is a prime example of a semi-socialist democratic government. we manage (for the most part) to balance democracy, socialism, and capitalism to make everything work (again, most of the time, but i think we get it right more often than the US does)

Porn will be illegal soon? Yeah, you're right... I have been noticing a severe drop in the number of porn sites recently. Online porn is a $3 billion business, which means it has a lot of clout. There is no way a buisiness that brings in that kind of money will let itself be legislated out of existance (Cigarettes are way more harmfull than Porn, but cig corporations are still making a ton of money).

i don't think it will become illegal, but it's likely that what you're looking at will be logged and monitered, what with the "keep it away from children" hystaria in government.

Wow, and last of all you claim that we will soon be shutting down free speech sites? Let me get this straight... the government is going to pass a law that will allow them to shut down free speach websites. Yeah, I'm sure the supreme court will let that shit fly.

they seem to have done just that in the name of "national security" a few times, but as i'm at school (during a spare), i don't have any links handy at the moment, though i think that such info can be found at the EFF site.

This is worrying indeed. Google sued..Google lost stock value (1.9 % out of 5.2% risen this year). This means that by defying the DoJ, they're hurting their stockvalue. A public company has the obligation to maximise value to their stockholders, which means it's directly against Google's interest to defy the DoJ. So ironically while this might be the idealistic course of action for Google, and perhaps the trade-secret aspect can be defended, from a buisness perspective Google will be encouraged not to repeat performance in the future if the trade-secret aspect *can't* be defended.

yes, but i think it would be even more against google's interests as i would think that a good number of the stock holders of google are either geeks (who are likely paying attention to this), or people playing stocks. if they just roll over and give the information, the geeks get pissed at it and sell the stock. stock price drops, then the people playing stocks unload it as its droping and thus begins the cycle.

that you're not supposed to use wikipedia for "real research"(tm)?

yes, but wikipedia is often a very handy springboard. well-written articles are essays in of themselves, and thus have several referenced sources, ranging from books, to published scientific studies available on the web, and such studies are often very difficult to find using normal search methods (Google, for example), as they're buried deep in various databases, and sometimes aren't indexed by Google due to the robots.txt being configured to prevent that.

and also, even if the study is in the results, the whole "sifting through the crap" in a web search makes it further problematic.

well, to be frank, the RBMK-1000 reactors that were used at Chernobyl was a pretty poor design. the thing was designed to be built cheap and run cheap. it was cheap to build, as it used normal light water for coolant and graphite for a moderater, and it used natural uranium as fuel, though this made it unstable.

the remaining reactors of that type have been made much safer by using more enriched uranium which makes them more stable and also used a differant design of the control rods (which was one of the major contributers to the chernobyl acident).

there are much better reactor designs, such as the CANDU. which also runs on natural uranium, but it pricy to build due to the inital investment in a large quanity of pure heavy water, but is very safe. or if you like, an even safer one called a pebble bed reactor, which will not cause an explosion even in the event that all support machinary is destoryed and all coolant flow is cut. (this isn't just theory. they have tested this using a reactor in germany. the tempature hits a certain point (well below a critical level) and then just stays there until you can repair things and get power flowing again.)
