    Except that a lot of the DirectX abstraction was cut out of the Xbox for the exact reason that you could target the actual hardware with a large performance gain.

    There's a difference between standards compliance and working with fancy JavaScript. The latter is so standards-free that people who make things like Gmail and Google Maps specifically have to make them work on each individual browser they want them to run on. Konqueror simply doesn't have that many users.

    That depends on how you define difficult. You might be able to do it and be lucky enough to get it to boot. But I'm sure that dozens of things would be obviously broken, and dozens more would be broken that you wouldn't notice.

    There's something to say for Xbox Live, though. EA convinced MS to let them use their own system, and the outcome is that EA games have worse online gameplay than other Xbox Live games.

    Maybe there is a gentlemen's agreement not to bother codec makers about using GPL'ed code if codec makers don't bother users about using illegal codecs with things like VLC.

    Actually, you use Microsoft's servers for VOIP. Also, with the exception of crappy EA games, you use Microsoft servers to find opponents. While I agree that it is annoying to have to pay, I'd hardly call it "highway robbery." Besides, the Xbox has MMORPGs with no monthly fee.

    I think the point is that most people in the public sector have somewhat greater job security than those in the private sector, and are often less motivated by a "do or die" attitude. This is a lot less pertinent to the sorts of jobs you mention than it is for paper-pushers, though. Nowhere did the GP say anything about public servants being leeches--in fact he was commenting on public PHBs, whom I would expect to be incompetent.

    They aren't Christians, only Catholics are. Oh wait, only Protestants are? Only Orthodox Christians? I actually know someone who claims that Shi'a isn't a form of Islam. Go figure. My point is that if you listen to enough people, nobody's a Christian. The LDS Church taken seriously isn't any more crazy than mainstream Christianity; it's just that mainstream Christians these days tend to be more secular than Mormons.

    The US was founded by people who distrusted even the government which they created. Even a mostly good government should not be trusted, since such trust would only pave the way for it to become corrupt. Distrust of government is certainly a good thing, as it is more likely to keep the government in check than blind faith.

    Given that a 9600 (not even a 9600 pro) is at least a generation behind in terms of graphics chipset, at the bottom of the line for that ATI generation, marketing this as a significantly upgraded video card would be a bit disingenious IMHO.

    You mean it's one generation behind the latest, which most people haven't adopted yet. As for bottom of the line, that's simply untrue--what's a Radeon 9200? This card isn't going to play Doom 3, but it's fine for what most computer users will be doing, and it certainly a welcome upgrade over the GeForce 5200 FX.

    Intelligent design is simply stating that certain things in life - like DNA - are simply too complex to have been formed by some amino acids randomly millions of years ago.

    Gee, that's funny. Current evolutionary theory states that RNA came first. Billions of years ago. That's probably enough time to get a few lines of Shakespeare out of the monkeys. There are still many things scientists cannot explain; however, there are a rather comical number of things which scientists can explain which IDers are too lazy to learn, and they then proclaim these things inexplicable.

    I'm sorta glad they didn't use Mozilla code now.

    What difference would it make to Mozilla if they had used Gecko? Absolutely none. RTFS, it doesn't even make a difference to KHTML. It would be nice if Apple contributed more to KHTML, but they're not hurting them any more than you and I are.
