Of course, you don't actually have to speak any Chinese to be literate in it. I'm still not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. At least you can't misspell words.
China is not implementing their own IDN scheme in an attempt to lock people into it. This is based on existing work on internationalized domain names. The largest country putting their weight behind IDNs is only going to encourage their rapid universal adaptation, and eliminate localization issues.

I notice that you haven't reproduced anything I've said in any of your posts.
This is a tool to help parents do their jobs. It is not being foisted on anyone. You can't complain about lazy parents, and at the same time chastise parents for not being lazy. This fits in perfectly with the idea of the ESRB rating system: voluntary ratings made to inform the parents and allow them to meaningfully control what their kids play. Without this sort of thing, people are going to listen to idiots like Joe Lieberman.
The conditions that encourage companies to fight for the formats are the very same conditions which render the companies' legal maneuvers irrelevant. I fail to see how that isn't ironic.
Sometimes I like to think that there is irony in the fact that a song called "Ironic" is not ironic. But it really isn't ironic. But is that lack of irony perhaps ironic? Not really. But...? It's quite a recursive problem, as far as I can see.
It's because the encumbered formats are so entrenched. GIF is still more popular than PNG, and MP3 is more popular than OGG. The irony is that in both cases, the majority of people have gone on using the encumbered formats, blissfully ignorant of any issues.
What microsoft is doing right now is taking steps to make sure it doesn't become a competition.
I'm pretty sure that improving a product to maintain one's marketshare, even if it is the vast majority, is in fact competition already. There's no reason that Microsoft can't make IE7 good. During the browser wars I used Explorer instead of Netscape because I really did like it better. Certainly they have the hackers and the resources to make the best browser if they want to. If Microsoft really does release a product better than Firefox, it will be sad to see the underdog lose, but really the consumers will win.
If I want to marry my cell phone, the state does not allow that either. Why? Because my cell phone lies outside the legal standard for entering into this particular contract. Either the state may set the standards for the contract, or it may not.
Your cellphone isn't another person protected under the 14th amendment.
I'm not gay, but I'm not allowed to marry another man any more than a homosexual man would be.
Yet women are allowed to marry men. If everyone were excruciatingly literally equal under the law as you suggest, then ONLY gay marriage would be legal, since there would only be one marriable sex. Either marrying men would be legal, or marrying women would be legal. Right now the law says you can marry anyone, as long as you are the opposite sex. That is discrimination.
While I am no fan of judicial activism, the 14th amendment does give the Federal government vastly greater power over the affairs of states than was originally enumerated in the Constitution.
The movie industry could care less about directors' vision. Directors and people who care about the artistic integrity of movies may be against it, but their political influence in the U.S. is probably about as significant as the Communist Party.
The story you linked to is about copyright infringement, not reverse engineering. It has nothing to do with TFA. Apple is not encrypting their undocumented code, so it has nothing to do with the DMCA. Reverse engineering is not necessarily banned by the DMCA; in fact, reverse engineering for interoperability is specifically exempt from it.
Consoles have essentially one hardware configuration. A heavyweight OS like Linux would slow it down horribly. If you want a general-purpose machine instead of one only to play games, go buy a PC. In fact, you can play games on those, too.
I think the real problem here is the difference between diplomacy and local politics. Despite the ministerial meetings of the WTO, the policies they make are shaped by diplomats. You would be surprised at the radically free trade that WTO members commit to. However, actually implementing such policies is often political suicide--after all, how many farmers will vote for you after you take away their subsidies? Never mind that the U.S. and the EU artificially deflate argicultural prices in the international market, driving farmers in the developing world out of business. The U.S. has probably killed more people with its blood for jobs policies than its blood for oil policies, but you just don't hear about it. How many Americans even know about the walk-outs at Cancun?
Unlike the Bretton Woods insitutions, the WTO was neither created by nor is it governed by the United Nations. The WTO has in recent years been working with the UN Coference on Trade and Development and the UN Development Programme, however.
Xbox LAN parties are more popular than for other consoles (at least where I live), even though they are the bulkiest by far. This would be really great.

Please stop censoring me.

Kids don't always listen. Parents should talk to their kids and use this.

Do not use the name of a friend or relative as your password, unless their name contains non-alphanumeric characters.

We all know, however, that "vid boi" is a real term.
When a file is opened on an HFS+ volume, the following conditions are tested:
If all of the above conditions are satisfied, the file is relocated -- it is defragmented on-the-fly.

I can't believe Lapine isn't on your list! You must be one of the Hrair?

Hell, there are probably conlangers out there who would do something like this for free.

Panther could do this too; after all, it uses ipfw. But Tiger just adds it to the graphical interface for the firewall.
They are owned by Microsoft, after all. Who else would run IIS and ASP.NET of their own free will?

R rated movies actually do incredibly poorly compared to PG-13 rated movies.
