i agree. i believe cross-platform software (as evidenced by growing web-based software) to be very important in the future of computing. This will push developers to learn to code in a non-proprietary way./* flame

allow our gov't to write the laws. we expect/assume any politician we elect will write laws WE want in place. While 'W' doesn't have that track record anyway, we have to remember that we (USA) are not a democracy in the true sense. We don't get to vote on an incredible amount of law that governs us. We also allow those we thought would represent us to do whatever career-advancing thing they want.
what you're talking about is the much discussed M$ monoculture. yes, i agree. The limits of the monoculture will limit the success of M$ projects. In the mean time, Linux will keep progressing and eventually be way more successful/respected than Winders.
but hate wizards. and the GUI insertion tools (such as visual studio) can be to root of alot of bad/not-understood code. students should have a basic ide. i even resport to KDE's kate.
(and don't say internet distribution etc only, people want things they can actually own in their hands)
but with subscription services, tivo-like tech (with drm and expirations built in), and good 'ol Trusted Computing we'll be all set for Internet-based distro. better - if Microsoft can provide these like they want to, it'll be sure to be good for you and taste good too./*end sarcasm */

I've been up for 164 hours, completed 7 projects for work, brought my orc mage to level 1029, and lost 34 lbs! Thanks, Coke!!
Too bad we don't have a way of keeping the Earth in the same orbit/on the same axis of rotation.
I'm sure industrial corporate America is responsible for contributing to the change in rotation. bad, corporate America! BAD!
if God didn't want us to eat animals, He wouldn't have made them out of meat.
