  1. This is the wrong approach on Toronto, The Naked City · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think this is a childish approach and very dangerous because of the legality of doing this, however I do understand their need to highlight this serious issue, this is clearly the wrong way.

In fact I would go so far as to say this is an unauthorised pen-test, in that part of a pen-test is in finding hosts/networks in the same way the physical location has been found, but not only found, also published.

I dont know where liability and juristiction come into play here, i'm surprised these guys/gals are prepared to go this extreme and risk finding out.

Surely a CNN interview would do their careers good and promote the issue far wider than a website could?

  10. Which country on What Types of Jobs are Best Suited for Telecommuters? · · Score: 1

You can do many jobs or even re-train yourself to do coding from remote. System Administration is often conducted from home so no real problems there unless it's a small company because you need somethere there to do physical systems work.

So your looking for a SME to a large company, very likely global, that will allow you to work remotely. Hmmm this is'nt going to happen. You need to define what country your wife is going to work in and then do something about it.

You could of course run an Internet business, however many people forget that even that cannot be run completely from remote, there is still paperwork, meetings, bills, landlords, and other physicalo necessities that you'll need. I'm sure some college kid on here will disagree with that, but then they probably hav'nt clocked up 1 real day of work in their life.

So in short, you both need to define what countru your going to end up in, before doing any more planning. Also bear in mind the differences in infrastructure between country's, you may not have access to ADSL/Cable modem/leased line in that region/country.

    Good luck.

I would think it's the age old concept that it's easier to leave than re-educate the management team. They often don't take well to criticism be that positive or negative. If they do take criticism, then stay with them, because they are rare and you have a good team.

A good team needs to be able to handle the truth in order to flourish, this does not seem to be the case here.

Passwordless ssh (RSA/DSA)keys means anyone with access to the box can access the remote server.

Of course then ssh MITM attacks could come into play, so you must watch those warnings of changed system keys.

When they say the desktop is dead, they mean that Linux X11 applications have a way to go before users find they are rock solid and work flawlessly, people nowadays expect everything on demand, a house, a wife, decent X applications.

I'm personally disappointed that Rasterman does'nt continue because he likes doing it, but because he wants to be in the middle of things. Perhaps Rasterman should become the business spokesperson for Linux.

I also wish people would'nt take the viewpoint of Linux having or being in a battle with Windows. It does'nt work like that, Linux is an alternative, you either choose it or you don't. It's not designed to be a Windows competitor, that's what magazine article writers would have you believe because a good confrontation makes a good story.

    >Windows has won. Face it. The market is not >driven by a technically superior kernel, or an >OS that avoids its crashes a few times a day

ok, I take a strongly traditionalist viewpoint of this, Linux should not be in any market, when they say market, the market people talk about mostly relates to click and see systems, OS X, Windows, BeOS etc, Linux like UNIX does'nt conform to "that market".

    >LaM: Where do you think the future ought to lie >for desktop Linux?

    >R: There is none

It's upto you Rasterman to do something about it, if you disagree and me and you too reading this.

I must say, i've lost a lot of respect for Rasterman as a Linux representative. He seems to be stuck in the present of what is out there now, but not what will be there in 5 years. No one knew Linux would be this useful and yet it is 5 years ago. For someone who is a genius coder, i'm a little disappointed that he does'nt have social foresight.

I can see this move by Microsoft backfiring in a big way. With a tighter economy, in particular less revenue coming into a company, the emphasis is on cost cutting, not increased expenditure. It's clear Microsoft has set the path for higher operating costs this will annoy people from the CFO's who are pulling back the reins and saying, whoa there boy to the techies who are content and in some cases still doubtful over Windows XP's performance and stability.
