I live about 90+ miles from my work, public transportation doesn't travel that far, or anywhere near that far. To save on fuel, I drive down to work on Tuesday, and drive back home on Friday. Work supplies me a place to stay while I'm there. But the reason I don't utilize it outside of for work is due to the fact that the closest bus stop to my house is still at least a 3 mile walk, and with the friggid temperatures that Alaska can see in the winter, Walking to the bus stop can be a bit more than just downright uncomfortable. I do, however utilize the ideas of Car pooling whenever possible, and in the summer months, use a bicycle to get places as I can.
You should come by around my neighborhood. My phone is constantly telling me of open wifi spots. I could just about make my entire trip to work online just jumping from one open wifi to another. The people where you live might be more educated, but not everyone is.
I wonder if those statistics also include the fact that you can also pay via "Electronic Check" as some places call it. I have a few sites that I pay bills online with, but they do not accept the particular credit card that I pay bills from. however I can input my check account number and routing code and it runs the transaction as an electronic. Still instant pay, just over the check system. Alot of the banks that have billpay features all the billpay feature does is allow you to input the payment information, and they send a check either electronically, or via mail.
Yes Checks as a system are still widely used in the US, the average person hasn't touched a check in years. As you saw, the guy you replied to said he hasn't written a check in 7 years, I'd venture to guess I haven't written a check in longer than that. I'm in a small town environment, and I can't remember the last time I walked into a place that accepted checks. Both large and small businesses in this town, and the town I vacation in I haven't seen a store accept checks.
Not all states have this requirement. Alaska State law permits driving in the left lane so long as your not doing under the speed limit. Arkansas law just states you cannot obstruct traffic by driving continuously in the left lane. North Carolina as well allows Driving in the left lane unless your doing 10 MPH under the speed limit.
This is a strait copy and paste from AcidPenguin9873. I think he said it best:
"Your first post is clearly a troll by stating that/.'s mod system is broken, as a reply to a comment which is unrelated to/.'s mod system. That's the precise definition of troll; furthermore, it is not a fact (no matter how much anecdotal evidence you offer), but rather, your opinion. Your other N-1 posts (all but the first) are meta-troll and/or meta-flamebait posts; in each post, you argue that the first post shouldn't have been downmodded for being troll/flamebait, thus sparking a useless discussion about trolls and flamebaits and/.'s mod system."
I got to play the Atari, Got a Nintendo when I was young, but the first game that would keep me in the house for hours on end had to be "Dune 2: Building of a Dynasty". Been addicted to the computer since.
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade came on DVD, can be mass produced, Yet locations world-wide were waiting in line for it's release. My location had at least 50 waiting for the release of Burning Crusade. Now, given that, I wouldn't for the life of me wait for Vista's release. Beta copy I got still works.
Ya know, I hate listening to Political arguements. Shows how stupid the general populace really is. I don't claim to know much when it comes to politics, gut I get sick of everybody who puts down the president. "lesser of 2 evils", ya know what, people need to stop complaining. He can't run again if he wanted to. Your limited on 2 terms as president, Get over it, and move on! President Bush is a good president, despite what the general populous thinks. War? I've been over there, and I'd go again. People need to shut up and support what's going on. If Jeb Bush were to ever run for President, I'd Vote for him just out of spite.
Norton's Personal versions have lost interest to me. They put so much into making the product pretty, easy, and slow as christmas, But that doesn't necessarily mean that Symantec is a bad choice. I won't ever own their Personal editions anymore, but I love their Corporate edition. Now, as a normal user, I can understand that nobody wants to pay the money for a corporate edition just to use on a single computer, but the place where I work expanded the purchase license for norton's corporate edition so that users can install a copy at their residence. I know the Military does this, and I know there's quite a few large companies that do as well. Anyone beyond that, I usually suggest something like winclam or avast
Sniffing traffic isn't illegal, as long as your sniffing traffic that involves your network. All they had to do was set up some fileshares, and see what networks hit their shares. a simple whois will tell you who owns the network, give that place a call, find out who the network is leased to. For troubleshooting purposes, you can usually get down to a company level just w/ simple phone calls. A university, is considered company level.
I got to say. Otto answered your post the best. I personally, do a mixture of online purchases, and purchases of CD's, depending on the albumn. If it's a good album, I buy the CD, end up ripping it to the computer, and placing on my mp3 player. normally, I just want a song or 3, I won't buy a whole CD for that. But I think Otto said it best. In the end, my purchased CD's never again see daylight shortly after purchase, almost makes me wonder why I even bother purchasing the CD to start with.
The biggest benefit I can think of behind advertising the Agent comes down to this. In my field of work, we don't permit anything but Internet Explorer and Firefox. We're not willing to accept the security risks of multiple different browsers, to much for us to keep track of. We do, however use a proxy server, and we deny all web agents that are not Internet explorer equivelants, and Firefox equivelants. In this case, advertising you agent becomes an excellent management utility.
I admit, I take a look every now and then when I see something funny on the front page while I'm in the checkout line at Walmart. But beyond that, do people actually read it?
Another thing you can do is in ntfs, you can deny all users (system, Administrator, personal users) from accessing the site, then kill the process. The process can then no longer respawn. The downside to killing the process this way is you can't delete it afterwords.

Don't worry, I found it all. Seems my spam box has more than doubled in the ammount per day in the last week alone.

I'd have left it as typed. Sounds like a better day.
