And most of the time cutscenes in HL mean standing around while NPCs do a performance that ends in the next level section being opened. Nothing you do influences the scene anyway unless it's paused so you can push a button or put a plug into a socket. I just don't like standing around with nothing to do in a game, when there's nothing I can do anyway why not remove control and make the camera show angles where you can actually see and hear what's going on?

To be fair, a C64 could do that.

None of the larger import stores sell PC games, at least not the indie variety. Perhaps they're worried because like 80% of these games use characters they have no rights to (i.e. shamelessly lifted from some dating sim). Thanks for the link to Palet, though, they seem to have more payment options and cheaper shipping options (Himeya refuses to ship uninsured and with many indie games that means you pay more on shipping than the game itself).

Allowing the graphics system to be set to output HD is one thing, having games designed to leave enough headroom to avoid framerate drops at higher resolutions is something else. Either you design the games to look worse than they could in 480p so they run fine at 720p or you use the machine's full potential at its standard resolution but can't do 60 frames per second in HD*.

VLC crashes every five minutes for me when it's running at full screen so I believe even MS could build something better than that. It also tends to display all subtitles in the same spot regardless of whether there's already one drawn there which means they are completely unreadable whenever two subtitles are shown at the same time (and pausing doesn't keep the subtitles in place, they still disappear after their displaying time, no matter whether the video is running). If it wasn't the only player I know of that can handle subtitles in the MKV format I wouldn't have it installed but unfortunately it's necessary for that and MKV is gaining ground.

You'd have to place a lot of restrictions and huge levies on many goods since you have to prevent not only importing directly from China but also e.g. shipping cheap chinese stuff to Japan, printing a new label on it and marking it as Made in Japan and thus exempt from any block on chinese goods. This would also cause a recession as many goods get their real price again and go out of the mass market price range. It'd be very tricky to do and of course with all politicians bribed to the brim it's not going to happen at all. Even if a president started the process it would probably take too long to be effective before he's out of office and the next fool will rreverse it.
