And when _I_ try to do anything, it breaks and when I ask for help, they all point to others because their software is perfect.
And do not even try to change settings in a human readable file, because if you are lucky, it will be overwritten by who knows what and that would be the best outcome.

And asking questions on how to do that, the RTFM is not available and the FAQ is something not even the writer or the developer can understand and all other documentation just says : you need X, Y and Z and the versuon you run is not the correct one and if you install the correct one, 7 other programs will break and will never work again.

So all you can hope for is to install something, hope it works and never do any upgrades, because that will break the system.

So what will I really miss? Being the boss over my own PC with tools that are usable by a human of average intelligence, not just by some Linux Guru who is only interested in his small little world, just so I can use it how I like it.

  17. Start looking on Ask Slashdot: How Do You Deal With a Terrible Tech Manager? · · Score: 1

It depends from company to company, but you must understand that no matter what, the outcome might be that you need to seek employment elsewhere.

I have had a boss who was a terrible people manager. I went to HR and explained the situation. Somebody else did the same. HR spoke to the manager and I must complement him that he changed and became a better manager. I knew however that it could have ended that I would have had to leave.

Another manager had no clue as to what the job of our team was. And I mean no idea. So I ran the department as if I had his position and took decisions in his place. The first meeting I went to, the other managers asked if my manager knew I was there. I bluffed and told them that if he didn't know, would they think I would be there.
That was the end of that. He was left out of the loop and things worked great.
No I never reported anything to him.

At a third place I had a manager that was incompetent. Any questions that where a bit harder than the time of the day where send to me. I was unable to do anything, because my N+2 was holding a hand above her head. Going to N+3 would be futile as he would point to N+2.

Once N+2 was fired, N+1 was left without protection. I knew that the new manager would give her 3 months to change and that she would be fired after 3 months. I was correct on the week. The cry of joy in the department when it was official was weird. Nobody was sure if they where allowed to be happy and if she was still in the building.

So be sure that whatever steps you take, the result might be that you need a new job. See also if others experience the same that you have, because perhaps you just are unable to work for your manager and the issue is between the two of you, not with him.
That does not mean you are a bad employee or he is a bad manager. It means that sometimes people are NOT compatible and it would take to much work for both to force it to work.

Or both, but Unions, not Guilds like they seem to have in the US. Those are there to protect the jobs, Unions are there to protect the people and no, that is not the same. They are overlapping.

Just talking about Belgium, so details might differ from country to country.
Unions saw to it that we have much stronger working rights. They are Unions and not a guild. With a guild (e.g. writers guild) you protect just one function. e.g. writers guild or bakers in the middle ages or beer brewers.
With a union, they look at the people, regardless if they are a writer or a baker or whatever.

In Belgium I can join any of several Unions. There are some that are specific for certain branches, like e.g. for train personal or for military, but even then you will have an option to join them, or another.

I can go to almost any union and join. And nobody cares. Really, they don't. I have been on both sides and nobody asks if you are Union or not You will have the same identical rights.
When a company is larger that 49 people, a union representative must be available, so social elections are held. So this means that every company with more that 50 employees is, in fact, a Union company. This means some monthly meetings and such. This does NOT mean you must join a union.

If you work in a company with less than 50 people, you can still join a Union, if you like. Or you don't. All up to you. Nobody will realy ask for it as there is no difference and you can join or leave at any m

The Unions saw to it that working in heat is illegal. At a certain duration, they need to see that drinks (water is fine) is available. If it takles longer, working hours need to be shorter (without loss of pay) and at even higher temperatures, they will need to close altogether.

So in Belgium, if this where the case, any person could contact their union who could start an investigation. "But what if I am not a union member at that moment?" Thenb you become one and they will be available from that moment on.
"How do you know that?" Because I have seen it in action.
37 hour week? No unpaid overtime? 35 days holidays? 8EUR extra per working day for food? Paid public transport? Extra insurance? Increase in pay with index so no negotiations need to be done? All done thanks to Unions.

I know many will now start to defend the companies and tell how bad of an idea all this is. There is no need for that. The companies have their own lawyers that are capable of defending themselves.
And because they are a Union and not a guild, they will understand that the companies need to make money to keep as many people at work as possible and not just at one company or in one profession.

Are they perfect? No. Are they better than nothing? Ask the people who started and fought for them.

Link the laptop to the big screen and you have a much nicer experience. Or you can use the TV directly or indirectly to other divices. Plenty of options.

To me television is just a word for "cheap bigass monitor".

  22. Once wanted to apply for a job in the US. There was an option to enter my race. (Optional, I know). That would not be allowed to be asked.
When you ask a woman if she is pregnant, she is allowed to lie and say no and you can't fire here when she comes working and anounces she was pregnant after all.
That said, I know of two women who where in that situation and are both still with the company several years later.
One even took on a new function where the company was well aware that she was pregnant with kid #3

As always, there will be people that abuse the system. This is very minimal and not enough to punish the rest. Luckily all the companies I have wored for where more or less correct. This because small companies tend to be more social as you know everybody and larger companies (50+) are obliged by law to have union representatives, so they are all unionzed.

  23. It depends a bit how things are calculated.and things differ per country.
I work 38 hours per week. Officially I work 37.That means I get 1 hours per week extra. That is 5 extra days per year. The company give soe extra days as well. 2 days if I was not sick in the previous year. 3 because I have worked a certain amount of time and then some extra because they want to. That brings me to 32 +2 offcial holidays that are on a weekend, so 35.

The official count would be 21. If that would be it (and some get only that) and I would work 50 hours per week, I would have at least 1 day per week or 50 days per year extra.

That said, I know people who work 4 days and are still full time. 9h30 or the like per day and they STILL have 45 days.

So it is much easier to find a balance between home and work. If people do overtime ALL the time that means one of these things (in reverse order of likelyness)
They are incompetent in their job
Their manager is incompetent at their job
There are issues at home, so he uses work to not go home

That last one is important, because if that takes to long, it will influence the quality of work delivered.

And as the GP explained, sick days do not count as holidays. You are still paid. How much depends on country as well on the period you are sick and if there is an extra insuarance that covers the money difference. Because after 1 month (where I work) you will get 80% and later it will go down further to 60% and then minimum wages.

Are there people that abuse the system? Yes, but not enough to punish the rest. People who get caught will lose everything and need to pay back everything, so the risk is pretty high compared to the gains. Obviously that would mean that they can fire you and you will not get any unemployment benefits. Also unwise to use them as a reference for a next job.

  24. Also very important is cost of living. e.g. in Europe there will be a difference if you live in London or in Prague.
I know of people who wanted to go to Geneva, for a serious increase till they learned about the cost of living compared to where they were.

From what you can live like a king in one place will not even give you housing in another.
