    And companies will bugger you no matter what. I have yet hear some marketing person say: Let's not contact these people as they are not in our target group. Instead they say: How can we rephrase it so it looks as if we targeting him personally.

    I am sure it will be even better if you drive 40mph and even better with 30, 20, ... all the way to zero. So why not drive 30mph? I am sure 2 wheels will be more fuel efficient as well. So take a moped and drive 10mph if fuel efficiency is what is important to you.

    Sure, that is what the IT people would love to happen. I have some bad news for you.

    Just like many IT people do not give a darn about other departments, other departments do not care about you. Do your job and if it is hard, stop whining and suck it up. If you think other jobs are easier go do those.

    Or you could actually work WITH the other departments and start talking to them and find a solution for most things. Unfortunately not many departments (not only IT) are willing to do that.

    So if I follow correctly, Judaism was Alpha as they came before Beta, Further then Muslim is the latest update of that.

    After all, they follow the same $DEITY, but based on newer versions of rules.

    In Belgium you can have sales only during two limited periods during the year. Many stores are against it and not because they want to be nice to their customers. :-/

    As you said, the 'only' loser is the customer.

    OK, no sale. Will be a bitch when all customers buy at your competitor.

    OK, that will only work if you are big enough. So in the end, size does matter. The big ones keep getting bigger, giving them even more power to 'negotiate'.

    In general it is a good thing. But why not go a bit further. I have the line File/Edit/.../Help and there is a LOT of place right there after that. Perhaps a good place to have the status bar icons from right to left.

    Or make it possible to use it for other things. Now it is just a big blank useless emptiness.

    Belgium has identity cards as well. Want to know what is on the cards? Read the code. Available for Windows, Mac and Linux. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_identity_card This makes it easy to be used for online things and many people already use it to do their taxes online.

    You are required to carry it with you at all times. I was asked once to show my ID. The next day I saw they were doing the same with somebody else who had about the same clothing and the same build I had, so they were clearly looking for somebody very specific.

    So with the openness of what is on it and the knowledge that it is not abused, I feel happy with it. However I would not want everything on one single card.

    I was thinking: what do you get in return? What happens if it does not work and the company goes broke anyway? What if it takes 25 years to get profitable? What do you get when it does work after say 6 months?

    For now it sounds as a one way street, so indeed, get out.

    The "Then what" part might be one of the things that comes out of the questioning they intend to do.

    It could be that the answer will be "Nothing" or the answer could be that if this kind of data is used, Europe will not cooperate with any further investigations or that it will be blocked or ...

    Or even that it is absolutely not illegal and does not break any privacy laws and Europe can start doing the same thing.

    They are just going to ask a question, that does not mean that they will do anything. The worst I expect to happen is that Europe says: It would not be legal in Europe and we condemn the US for doing it. And that will be the end of it.

    They were suspected. That does not mean they actually were. Also how many false negatives?

    And why allow phones in the first place? Just do not allow anything that can be used for cheating, including pens. Provide people with what they need. If they need a calculator, then give them a calculator. If people need a pen and paper, then give them pen and paper.

    From experience I know that you can open a pen and put paper in it. (Also I know that by re-writing the cheating paper several times, because it was to big, I was actually learning and in the end did not need the cheat sheet, because I knew what was on it.)

    No need to crack anything if you own the cloud.
    You can easily use OSS without giving away your source. You can even contribute and give back to the OSS community and STILL you have all the info you need. You just don't give back YOUR code.

    Many people fail to understand that for the same reason they fail to understand that states which enact conceal-carry laws experience lower rates of violent crime.

    You mean states like Bavaria in Germany or Flanders in Belgium? They not only have no 'conceal-carry' law, but have lower murder rates then any state in the US.

    And when talking about states, we could also extend to who countries.

    So to get peace in Afghanistan and Iraq, all we have to do is to allow conceal-carry and not take away their weapons?

    And on a bigger scale, we should have applauded Iraq if they actually HAD concealed weapons of mass destruction.

    Or might it be that things are a bit more complex?

    Website with rss feed. Mailinglist where people can unsubscribe.

    You had 9 months to prepare that mailinglist. Add everybody and also give them the option to opt-out easily or even better, give them the option to opt-in.

    You almost sound like Joe Spammer "once again everyone that WANTED to know did and those that didn't could just ignore it."

    I don't post on facebook much but it has gotten me in touch with a lot of past friends.

    How important was this for you? e.g. how much effort have you put into finding them before? I have tried it as well and the people I contacted I had not spoken in years.

    The conversations was "How are you? What do you now? Nice to talk to you. It is way to long. Take care."

    As regards of posting pictures and doing updates of your kids, there are things that you will be able to do. It is called a website. Put some RSS and/or Atom feed on it and people will be able to follow it.

    If people do not visit that site or do not want to subscribe to your RSS feed, then perhaps they are not that interested in your daily doings or regular updates as you or even them might have thought they were.

    That is what I have. No more icons or whatsoever. The 127.127.127.127 is becase it points to a specific vhost where the 404 error is an empty file. If you don't have a webserver running, best use 0.0.0.0 which is a bit quicker then 127.0.0.1

    Hunting is another thing, as you will be focusing on one target.

    Seems logical. Hunting would be a daily thing to do, war not so much. It is not as if they were at war all the time.

    The great thing with cell phones used to be that you were able to call with it and be called. Then they added a clock, then music, then the rest and they will be adding more.

    Cars used to be about bringing you from A to B. Then they added the look, safety, and all the rest and they will be adding more.

    So indeed all these new things are more important. However they are important to the people who sell them, because that is the trick to let consumers think they need it and buy a new one every year, long before its real end of life.

    And these are not the only things that companies want us to buy new before its end of life. Clothes is another and even food (how much do you trow away or not actually need?) and almost everything else.

    Wether this is a good or a bad thing is something else, but do not be mistaken that the importance is driven by the companies, not by the consumers. That is only what they WANT you to think.
