    Side comment:
Vienna (wien) is the Austrian Capital and one of the three places where the UNO has dependencies (the other two being New York and Geneva)

The whohle thing is noteworthy because Vienna has not only jumped the Linux Bandwagon but because they are in close contact with the people doing the same in Munich (not that far away).
They have both offered to help and support other cities considering a change as well...

So this is not a single incident but - as they have stated themselves - a movement.

here the official information by the MA14 (thats Magistrats Abteilung or City Dept. 14)

    Actually not.
    Directly, that is.

AFAIK Hollywood is depending on the revenue of homevideo and dvd sales, since apparently the revenue generated by cinemas isnt large enough to earn anything substantial, largely to the immense cost of marketing.

So if they're really depending on homevideo and dvd's all kinds of pay-per-view or download technology that's developed is potential (and very real) concurrence and a very real danger to their wallets.

Logically, there are two ways around this: Obtaining a cut from the revenue of the pay-per-view cash or creating a delivery system that can compete with the download/streaming systems.

But you can bet that Hollywood has a careful eye out to all developments in that field.

Just reread my comment and it looks a lot ruder than i really intended.
    well.
What I wanted to say is:
Basically I like the US. But I have got the impression that the American political system is on the verge of sliding into a plutocratic aristocratiy.
Reason for this is the way the political right seems to try to unbalance the system so they can act uncontrolled but control all others, namely their own citizens and their political reps.

To me that looks too much like something that happened some 60 years in my country's northern neighbour, Germany, and lead to a bunch of my relatives sitting in not so nice places a little later.
Well. the US is the one and only military power in the world. And guess what scares me here.

If you wonder why, take a map and have a look where there are US Military bases now that havent been there 10 years ago, and be a little paranoid about it.

But aside from that: The point is that they maneuver around the law as they can if it suits them. If the Government does that there's real trouble, if you ask me, because that is dangerous in a 3rd world state, but even more so in the sole Superpower we've got left.

    Hmm..
    enough rambling.

I hope you see that I do think about the US alot, and I do care (even if on the paranoid side), and therefor accept the aforementioned apology.

Count in the cost of troubleshooting over the time of usage (should be 5 years or more at least, i guess), the cost for schooling/learning and so on then you've got a different equation. With all the crappy docu that is available for win based systems (as available to your mom&pop IT dept.) you can run around in circles to solve a given problem and have to come up with a hammer and chisel method to solve it, meaning it's usually a betting game whether it will work or not. Usually it is less sweat to reinstall, but then there's no guarantee that it will work then. With Linux/OSS you can find an answer and therefore solve the problem instead of patching around blind. If not you still can contact the dev's (who will actually answer you if you've got a real prblem) Of course, you still will have to invest time and effort. But with FOSS you'll get improved stability with time. Migration cost alone isn't all of the bill. Maintenance is the magic word - and the money dump.
