  4. another look on Speed of Light Inconstant? · · Score: 1

i believe the speed of light _is_ constant. perhaps it is not the speed of light that is changing, but the speed of time itself. if the speed of time is increasing, it would appear that the speed of light was slowing down.

this theory would also explain why the universe appears to be expanding. (einstein believed this was impossible).

so if it is time that is expanding, a static universe would appear to be expanding, and a constant speed of light would appear to be slowing.

there was an article on slashdot last year that stated the earths rotational speed was increasing because of the dams we've built that change the center of gravity of the earth. so maybe things will balence out :)

im borrowing a book from my neighbor titled 'the ibm programmer's challenge' - or something close to that. its pretty old, maybe even from the 80's. it has problems and then the solutions in c, pascal and fortran. for each question it has limits such as time, length variables, etc..
    pretty neat :)

  7. Re:Rhetorical question on Browsing Alone · · Score: 1

here is a buddhist parable i like, it was taken from Steve Hagen's 'Buddhism: Plain and Simple'

"The situation we always live in is like that of the wise Chinese farmer whose horse ran off. When his neighbors came to console him the farmer said, "Who knows what's good or bad?"

When his horse returned the following day with a herd of horses following her, the foolish neighbor came to congratulate him on his good fortune.

"Who knows what's good or bad?" said the farmer.
Then, when the farmer's son broke his leg trying to ride one of the new horses, the foolish neighbor came to console him again.

"Who knows what's good or bad?" said the farmer.

When the army came through, conscripting men for war, they passed over the farmer's son because of his broken leg. When the foolish man came to congratulate the farmer that his son would be spared, again the farmer said, "Who knows what's good or bad?"

When do we expect the story to end?"

    interestingly, i found this in a person's weblog. :)

hello, i remember that article too. it made me wonder two things. 1) do ants look at us and say we're impossible.. :) 2) what if the earth used to rotate faster, there would be much less gravity making such huge animals possible. if a comet hit the earth with enough force to slow the rotation of the earth. all the dinosaurs would have died because they couldnt hold themselves up! does this theory make any sense?
