Really, I found Napster to be a very poor service: there was no file resuming, downloading from multiple sources, and it was really difficult to find less mainstream-music. Some of the new services like Kazaa are much better, at least from my experience.
Yeah but then some people would claim that/. isn't quite as important as passport verification (at least if you need that to use windows/office/messenger/hailstorm whatever)
Maybe if something like this happens when the real important Hailstorm services are being rolled out, or Office needs verification, a lot of businesses will consider twice.
Interesting to note that Kuro5hin.org has started a "pay for no ads" version of their site. I doubt it is going to be very succesfull though: most people don't really mind banner ads that much.
Wrong. Graphics do not mean much in the world of Consoles: Games do, especially exclusive games. This is why Nintendo has always been in a strong position: they make great games.
Consoles like the Jaguar and Neo-Geo died mainly because they did not have great games.
You raise an interesting point: why hasn't IBM responded to Craig Mundie's speach? Sure, having Open Source evangelists respond is one thing, but having IBM give a rebuttal of Mundie's speach would go much further in influencing business manager's opinions regarding open source.
Maybe he thinks he's god and ge can control the economy. So he can give hot languages the value of lots of jobs. Oh man it's getting late i should go to sleep.
Ok my first sentence didn't make any sense at all. Give me a break I've been forced to get drunk by my flatmates tonight:) . Anyway, what I meant to say is something like:
No seriously, I have to say that I found it Odd that the parent comment claimed that C and C++ are more intuitive than Java.
No seriously, I have to say that the parent comment claimed that C and C++ are more intuitive. Maybe it's because I had a course in Software Engineering before I started programming (in SE they teach you to think about programming in very Object-Oriented ways, well the course I took anyway). I found Java much more intuitive...I had to use C the same term to write a control program for a robot...I can tell you it was pretty ugly. I found it was so easy to make mistakes in C that were very hard to trace.
Ok people don't diss me coz I'm crap at programming...I guess I'm just not smart enough. But from my point of view, Java is a much better language to teach programming than C or C++.
Of course for real software development, Java quite often is not a realistic choice, mainly because the Swing libraries are, well... a little slow some times;)
If you read the article completely, you would have noticed this:
I know that an accessory lighting mechanism is in the works. You can see that Nintendo left slots for it on top of the casing. The good part about leaving out the backlight though is more battery life. If the display was backlit, there probably wouldn't be any way that the two AA batteries would be able to supply enough power for the unit to last for any reasonable amount of time. Add the backlight to the list of things to get!
With the backlight addon, the GBA looks pretty sharp i think.
If they had gone with an optical format, Nintendo probably wouldn't have gone with full-size CDs. Remember that the GAMECUBE uses custom half-size DVDs. It would have been interesting to see what the functionality could have been like if they had used these for the GB-Advance storage. Portable movies?
You couldn't put full-length DVDs on there, but MPEG4 movies could fit easily.
Ohh well but they didn't use this, so what am i going on about;)
Maybe in the States nobody uses MSN Messenger, but in Europe it is very common. I use both MSN and ICQ because I have friends on both systems. I don't know anyone who uses AIM though.
I live in Amsterdam (in the Jordaan) and I can tell you that as long as you stay out of certain areas, you won't really be bothered by Weed-smoking tourists. Sure if you go to the red light district, the leidseplein, or whatever, it is horrible. But take the Jordaan for example. I think it's possible to maintain the beauty of the city while keeping teenage-tourists. If only they would stop digging the place up;)
Microsoft won't be developing, or publishing the games, they're just throwing money around to make sure that no-one else does it for any platform other than their own.
It will be interesting to see if this includes all of the Matrix Mods for Quake, HL & UT. Hopefully M$ will not squash them, becuase some of them are looking really cool. And obviously they are internet-capable, which M$ wants exclusively for Xbox.
Exactly. In Japan, there is a saying that goes something like "if a nail is sticking out it has to be hammered in", so there is no tolerance for non-conformance.

Ok fine maybe the recession will help linux gain ground over Windows 2000. But probably Linux would be deployed more widely if there was no recession in the first place. So I don't see the recession really helping Linux all that much.

I'm not so sure about this. As we heard the guy from Microsoft say a few days ago, the price of software is not everything. Linux needs hardware to run on, and that hardware is expensive. So, if companies don't have money to buy hardware due to the recession, that won't be a good thing for Linux.
Personally, my cd player fits in my pocket just fine, and CDrs are by far the cheapest medium. Not to mention the fact that on a 12x writer a cd is written in an instant, unlike my old MD player which would copy at 1x speed.

There's no doubt about it: it's an Angel. Prepare to launch the Rasterman.

Hmm well I really like most Nintendo games, and I think a lot of people would agree with me.

Perhaps....i'm kind of in a bad mood so I can't grasp humor right now :P

Linux became big without IBM's help. IBM marketing Linux can only be a good thing. Many companies are supporting Linux, unlike OS/2.
The only way Mozilla is going to gain marketshare is by leveraging the Netscape brand name.

Didn't compaq put loads of engineers in a black box, and let them reverse-engineer the IBM bios?
