It seems this version of Office has the potential to be the first version in a long time that has some solid new features. The XML file format has a lot of potential I think. I'm not really up to date with OpenOffice's capabilities, but from what I gather it seems to clone most of the capabilities found in Office 2000/XP. Is the same kind of support for XML planned in OpenOffice??
Correct me if I'm wrong, but every internet connected device has a separate IP adress right? So then I would have separate numbers for my PC, PDA, wrist-watch, whatever I want to use to receive calls. I'd rather have one number for all those devices. I'd prefer some large scale ID project. Of course MS passport and Sun Project Liberty don't really seem like ideal choises to me. IS there a better way to do this?
I think the point is that not all people who use p2p networks are necessarily hadrcore P2P pirates. Why wouldn't free software projects use p2p for distribution? It's cheaper than paying for expensive servers & bandwidth no?
Yeah, it's called BitTorrent. If only this sort of thing would be built into browsers like Mozilla standard, there would no longer be a reason to have the/. effect.
Why is it that people create these virtual worlds that contain the same limitations as the real world. The idea of money only makes sense when you have scarcity. Guess what, this is cyberspace: there is no scarcity necessary here. And yet people build it into their worlds as a "feature".
What I would really find interesting to see is how such a world would look like when there is no scarcity. How would population centers look (usually city center means $$$).
These little economies raise big questions, therefore, and by no coincidence, they tend to be the big questions of the economic age. How, for instance, do we assign value to immaterial goods? What defines ownership when property becomes as fluid as thought? What defines productivity when work becomes a game and games become work?
Are we so used to the notion of scarcity that we wish to reproduce it in cyberspace? Would we not rather move beyond this idea?
Another interesting aspect to think about is how copyrights relate to this. Say I write a piece of code that represents my design for a Castle in such a virtual world. If I copyright it nobody else can legally build the same castle as me. And so the idea of scarcity is reintroduced. But it is only relevant as long as there is no rich public domain from which people can retrieve equivalent items. So hopefully there would be tons of castles available under a Creative Commons license.
Some people, like me, would say that Farscape is a higher priority than Futurama. That being said, I don't think there's any chance the show can be saved. According to SciFi's Farscape cancellation FAQ:
Q: Have the sets been destroyed? A: Although they were initially scheduled to be struck during the week of September 9, SCI FI Channel requested a reprieve as any possibility of saving the series was explored. Unfortunately, we understand that the sets will now be struck by Friday, September 20.
Seems to me that if all the sets have been destroyed, there's little hope of bringing the show back...
This seems to be the only prior art posted in this story which seems to be relevant, since it also appears to be using the method of shining light through the case that this patent is patenting.
Because they are both high tech professionals, Paul's parents say they know firsthand the addictive nature of computers and the Internet.
"They are somewhat addicting, and for young children that don't have all of the faculties that we have as adults, I don't think they can determine how much of something is not good for them," Baldridge said.
Actually, I'm not sure this case can be used to test the DMCA at all. Note that the DVD X Copy software doesn't actually break the DeCSS encryption, it merely captures the audio and video after they have been encrypted (by what I'm assuming is using some legal form of decryption system like a users DVD software). If this is really so then I would assume the case will be thrown out since it has nothing to do with the DMCA.
I saw the movie here in Switzerland last christmas, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not Japanese (Dutch) and didn't feel there were any parts of the story I didn't understand because I don't know anything about Japanese folklore. Your argument might have made sense for Princess Mononoke, which was based on a Shintoist myth if I recall correctly. Which parts of the storyline exactly did you think were not clear to you?
It doesn't block popups. Which is why i use the proxomitron software with ie6. Mozilla is simply slower on WinXP than ie, which is why i use it. Also, I hate the way mozilla doesn't take the themes i apply to windows.
VMware is commercial software, so that won't happen. Is there an open-source alternative???

here, though they're in dutch. I would translate, but I have no time. Basically, they say that they don't want to win by cheating, and that if they have evidence to support the claim that someone is cheating, that person will be removed from the team.

That would be kuro5hin..
since the Matrix was very much inspired by another anime, Ghost in the Shell.
forgot the link
The Swiss actually voted on that yes, not some representative in their name.
Use your PS2, or use the QCast Tuner
I think this device will only take off if they don't include any content control like floppy discs or CDs. Remember what happened to Dataplay ???

There are also some videos of the demos online.

It seems you can get a walmart pc for $199 with lycoris pre-installed....
Not extremely exciting, but the guy who left red hat to fork a kde-based distribution can be found here: ark linux

Can you get a powerbook with no operating system installed? Wow I didn't know that...
I've noticed how every story on /. mentioning united linux has been negative. Objective????
