Hmmm.. they studied "high school and college students". Study the same kids when they have to use the computer at the office all day and you'll see a different trend.. at least typing an email can look work-related. Sometimes.
Study my peer group back at university and you could have drawn conclusions that communication through talkers and MUDs was replacing email.
"the cities are empty. heck, space was empty at that.."
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space.
as it only works from a fixed viewpoint may want to consider security cameras, which generally have a fixed viewpoint.
If you/your van are invisible to cameras covering an area, you're invisible to the guards watching the screens.
In cases where there are multiple cameras monitoring a single area, this would be a little tricker (however, this becomes easier to deal with, the greater the difference between their angle of observation (i.e., present a different fake image on the other side).
There were a couple of guys from Wales got done a couple of years ago, after it was discovered that they were using oil from a local chip shop in their car (the smell gave it away, I think). Their crime? Tax evasion.
do a nice line in bags that have padded laptop compartments but don't look like laptop bags. I tried to get my workplace to get some a while back, but then I left.
The reason the lastest games run poorly on your nice new hardware 6 months down the line, is because the developers are busy working with some new video card.
Why bother making optimisations when you can expect people to have more memory, faster processors..?
The console market works because developers learn how to develop for a set configuration (the difference in quality between early PS1 games and later releases was massive).
If you know there's a specific PC configuration that a few million potential customers (YMMV) are going to have, you're going to make pretty sure that your software runs nicely on it (especially given that due to the nature of this new xbox thingy, their owners are more likely to buy games than the average PC owner).
Apparently, there's a clause in the contract that will make Universal Pictures pay additional royalties if the movie doesn't get at least 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is (quite reasonably) to protect the good name of the Spy Hunter brand.
If individual plants can become profitable, then more plants will be built - and larger. This is of course the first generation here.. from the FAQ:
"the next generation of plants will be larger"
and also:
"Future plant size will depend on the volume of source material available."
Why couldn't there be thousands of these scattered across the US & Europe? Plus, this is one area where the advantage isn't going to go to developing countries... shame on them, but they just can't produce enough (otherwise) worthless junk.
Although looking at the small print there could be trouble:
"Does the RES plant release any by-products or emissions? The only by-product is processed water."
Water! Terrible processed water!!! Kevin Costner has so much to teach us:(
You make it sound like COM, COM+, ActiveX were each complete revolutions that required the programmer to start from scratch, rather than providing additional functionality that builds on an existing model. To suggest that every new advance requires (at least) months of work to be junked is a bit of a stretch.
I also question the presence of DDE on the first list as it's quite a different fish (given that everything else there is your good ol'e OLE family tree).
I can't see why Microsoft are going to charge extortionate fees or demand additional royalties for using something like this. Look at the model for Visual Studio. Does it make development easier? Yes. Do MS expect royalties from distributables? No. Does it tie you in to using Windows? Yes. The purpose of XNA is to make it easier for people to create games on Microsoft platforms. MS then make money on the OS or, in the case of consoles, from the sale of the game itself (just like Playstation get money from every PS game sold). Seems pretty transparent to me and hopefully good news for the smaller development studios.
and 98ft long :)
..they've removed the automatic "Shake the baby excessively" option that social workers would often use when unattended:
An adopted baby no longer snaps to the ground when the social worker that delivers it puts it in a crib.

..it's the tried and tested business model of crack dealers worldwide. Give it away free, get you hooked and then charge.
