I just migrated my workplace form NT4 to 2k3 Active Directory.
The process went without a hitch. first we ghosted our pdc, that way we could return things to normal quickly, if the upgrade didnt work. we poped in the 2k3 cd, and went through like a normal install.
AD is tied to dns. chose your dns name now, its best if you control your own dns servers if you want to use your web domain, otherwise its a bit of a pain (but it works)
after the install completed dc promo ran and imported all our user and computer accounts. it might be best to do the housekeeping of unused users, groups etc. before migrating.
Adding additional controlers is easy, just install 2k3 and run dcpromo, and select add an aditional controler to domain. it will automaticly replicate for you.
Design your directory structure prior to migration.
and like all windows systems - when in doubt reboot. 2k3 is rock solid, but i had an issue where dns would not replicate properly, untill i reboted the first DC.
Also i might add that Microsofts Software update services (SUS) works amazingly well. it can be inforced with Group policy, and all your approved updates can be forced to your clients when you want them to be. Patch management is much simpler now.
This is Warren Buffets company. the stock never splits, and that is why it is so high. the shares are ment to be an investment, in themselves, and the performance of the share is directly tied to Buffets continued sucess and growth.
basicly these are not the same as normal shares of a company, though they are
also add the cost reductions in only having to support one platform. runing 2 sets of file servers, managment stations etc is an unessasary expense.
Also windows techs are a dime a dozen. mac or linux techs cost more. a tech who does both well is rare and expensive (i know, i am one)
when your organization runs one or two apps that dont run on the mac, and realize that supporting 2 platforms is an unnessasry expense, the writing is on the wall.
I highly recomend reading Jane Jacobs' Book. It warns of all the problems urban society is facing now, but was writen in the early 60's when all the modernist ideas that led to the problems were being implemented in north american cities. Iwould also recomend James Howard Kunstler's "Home From Nowhere" It is an explanation of why the suburb is the root of all societys problems. (see www.kunstler.com
Money will not fix education in Ontario. it is very broken, it is broken in the teachers and the methods used.
First, with regards to Funding Cuts, in Ottawa there are two school boards. the catholic made its cuts to administration and as a result were largely unaffected. The public board on the otherhand insited on cutting programs that benifited students, and as a result students suffered. as for school closings, i have spent my entire academic life commuting to school because there wasent one in my town. those parents should really nolt complain.
Ontarios teachers and their methods are a great source of concern to me. first too much emphasis is placed on regurgitation, as opposed to crtical thinking and understanding. the system and its methods are very disconnected from the real world and unfortunately students do not realize this until after graduation if at all.
Parents fear change, they here stories from teachers who want more money and less work (not to say they are all bad)and get scared, and think that education today is the same as it was when they were childeren, and fight the change on an emotional and and visceral level instead of what is acutully good for their children.
Mandatory certification and testing of teachers was one proposed and implemented solution to this concern. Teachers complained about stress and being scared of the test. Many Tech Certs require you to recertify every X years, why shouldnt teachers.
Finaly Technology is overused in schools. Flash is begining to take over substance in student work. computers are being used to teach, instead of the teacher and it doesnt work. the sudents dont learn as much/as well
the real measure of the education system is the results of the students, and their opinions after they have completed high school.Parents are concerned, but are too detached. Teachers and school boards have an intrest in the status Quo. when a signifigant number of students cant pass basic literacy tests, i question all technology spending in schools.
From the Article: "BayStar hasn't withdrawn its demand that SCO return its money and BayStar's lawyers, he said, still haven't told SCO's lawyers how SCO breached their contract. So McBride figures BayStar doesn't have a legal leg to stand on and won't be able to get its money back."
hasent this been what SCO is doing to IBM - Not telling them anything..
i use and like debian. but i want new packages to be released, and for it to generally appear to be supported.
if you dont want non-free stuff, fine, release sarge, its almost ready (and long delayed) and make removal of non free packages a goal of the next release.
i drive alot, and have seen a lot. imn my experiance speed is not really a safty issue. speed however does compond the effects of the stupid thing that causes the problem.
tailgateing, weaving in and out of traffic, underestimateing effects of the weather/snow and running red lights are all made worse at high speed.
on a dry road, low wind and no trafic, speed wont be a huge problem by itself
it isnt different then the article a few days ago, however, that article was about owing what you do on your own time. if you write papers in your field, on your time, then you own them, but if the university is paying you to sit in an office, and write course materials for a course your teaching, then the university owns that work.
I teach a college course. i developed the course on my own time, and get paid for my hours spent delivering it. i own the material, i am free to offer that material to anyone who will pay for it.
if the college payed me to develop and deliver a course, then thay bought my expertise to build them something. they own it.
YOU should. the government produces these documnets for a reason. if anyone knows who to secure a system, its the government. read them and apply them as required.
Also you have much nice hardware. How about policy? Policy is more important. What happens when somone is hired/fired? Who is allowed to do what on the network? Do you have a business continuity plan? Is their a document that states how to recover from a disaster? Has it been tested? Have you ever had a Threat and Risk assesment preformed? If yes when was it last updated.
You have some good technical means to provide security, how about the rest? The government has wonderfull guides on how to do all this stuff, and although thick - they really are helpfull.
its not that low end, and they are not that cheap. a linksys or dlink will work fine for most people
(i have a Cisco 806, it runs the full IOS 12, with ip firewall feature set. i bought it to learn cisco kit, it is designed for small-med offices, and is overkill for home users.)
plan for the effect, not the cause. aliens, fire flood are all different causes, but they can all cause the same result - destruction of the building. plan for that.
if you need to relocate an office, move it to a hotel. you have space (rooms, convetion space) all designed to have furniture brought in and phones, power and data, and available on short notice. you also have staff to keep it all clean.
plan the order for it systems restoration. development can wait a week but if your cash flow stops your screwed.
In Canada there is a DND standard for the maximum size of a piece of a disgarded HDD. i belive it states roughly that no piece of the smashed HDD can be bigger then a half cubic centimeter (aprox). Im told they now have a shredder for disgared drives, so no more slegehammer.
i am by no means a conousour, but i can taste a diffence between caned, and plastic bottled coke, and i like the caned one better.
i dont know anything about the manufactureing process of either, but i think the contents of the can, taste better then the bottle, and avoid plastic for soda containers as a result.
There are several products out there that will encrypt the contents of the entire hdd, and require authentication to boot and decrypt the device. if the unit goes missing, all the person who finds it can do is replace the drive, cause they woint get squat off the secured one.
I beleive 1 or 2 of these products are fips 140 certified
wep is insecure. it was designed to offer some security, not be unbreakable. it is a trivial effort to pull a signal off a wire, if i really want to do it, i can. just like cracking wep. wep wasent designed to be a complete security solution, it was meant to be discourageing to outsiders
I have to ask why? why not just use ssh, or even telnet like a normal person? What posible need could you have to issue commands through an IM program?
Also given that IM programs are notoriously insecure, what are you gonna do to make sure that your system isnt compromised. AFAIK most im messages are sent in the clear, and are readable by anyone with a sniffer.
i think vacinations are a good idea. TB, polio, smallpox etc are all worthwhile. and the vacinations have been arround for a while, so if they were the problem, it would likely have showen up by now.
but today, we medicate for everything, im sure 95% of/. readers had chickenpox as a child. today they imunize against it. this is a new and recent thing, that really isnt that nessasary if you think about it.
who really knows what all these medications are doing to our bodies. im not against vacsinations, i would just like to see them approached more sensibly.
To quote PM Jean Poutine "ah yah i am aware on this initiative. this initiative was started by peoples in my cabnit, and I said that this is a good thing, because when the Canadian peoples get thier own certificates they can hang them on thier walls in frames and be proud to be canadian just like when they recived thier high school graduation certificates."
