If functions can now be data passed around as variables, doesn't this reduce the security of an application? Granted, you don't need to use blocks but i can envision a future world where internet server software is written heavily in blocks. What if a block makes it's way into the system from the outside world? Its the same thing as a code injection hack but this technology could potentially make it much more simple to do that. Yet another security concern.
Given the new-ness of the technology it seems like some of these security issues need to be worked out... patterns developed and such.
This technology strikes me as a solution for user experience issues and not bullet proofed for server solutions. I may be wrong.
When they say that you need to hand it over, couldn't you give them the encryption the encryption key with a second key? Then when they ask for THAT key, you encryt that second key with a third key. etc etc. Could this postpone giving them any info ever at all?
IOW. Does the law say anything about the format of the encryption key?
Yup, Hilarious. All that talk of being greater than thou! WOW. Indeed.
Requiring an interviewing for his course doesn't make him jerk. I just believe he doesn't understand pedagogy. Who would want to take a class whose professor, they believed, didn't understand the principles of undergraduate education? Alas, who says that kind of thing within the first 30 seconds of meeting someone? That's being a jerk. Have you ever been in an interview? You need to start somewhere. "I'm really excited to be here", "This job looks really interesting", etc. You don't start a _conversation_ with "Hello, I am qualified for this position because of this list of things... abcdef." That's not a conversation.
Confusing these things make an ass out of me and you.
Yes it makes sense... Filters ARE needed for classes. But that's why they have required classes for a class. He took it to a completely new uncalled for level.
Excuse me. No life is any more valuable than any other. Just ask the Dalai Lama. The bum down the street is just as human as George Bush or John Kerry. All deserve to be treated with immense value.
I'm sorry you don't know my accomplishments but maybe you should hold your tongue until you know what I've done in the world, not that what one has done makes one valuable. Have you seen Fight club? "You are not your job. You are not the money in your bank account. You are not the car you drive. You are not how much money is in your wallet. You are not your fucking khakis."
Anyway, death is not a reason to silence discussion. He has done a lot of things including some of the ass hole things he's done to me and many others. Discussing the total of who he is is more respectful than just putting him high on a pedestal (which he did on his own and doesn't need any more help with). You need to see him as a whole person, not just as what he's done. His accomlishments don't make up for, in my perspective, that he was an ugly person.
I do wish him health and long life. No on deserves what he's going through.
He is... under the label biggest dick and largest ego.
His ego is, I swear to God, bigger than that of Steve Jobs, really, no joke. When I was in school at CMU he required an Interview (uppercase I) to get into his class. What kind of professor tells undergrads that they don't deserve to have "an educational experience" in 3d, VR, game technology, etc?
I sumbitted. I didn't want to because i wholey disagreed with his philosophy of education. His class seemed interesting enough that i let it go. The interview went something like this:
Me: Hello, Professor. Your class sounds very interesting and I'd like to take it. Randy: Hi. So your a white upper class yuppy student who thinks they deserves whatever they want. {sarcasm}Greeeeeaaaat.{/sarcasm} What aspect of my class are you interested in?
I swear on the holy bible it was the first thing out of his mouth! He still admitted me to his class... I emailed him back saying i wasn't going to take it.
Even though he was a complete ass-hole to me I still respect _some_ of the work he's done. One exception is this, I did a technology review of Alice at one point. It was not impressive coming from an experience of writing a 3d game engine and scripting system. He really does think he's "THE BIG SHIT" when in fact he is just "a shit."
That is just my experience with him. Has anyone else met the guy?
Dear Randy, I'm sorry to hear about your condition. No one deserves it. My positive thoughts tonight are with you. May you live a painless and pleasant life that remains. Also, could you not be a prick to those around you? javalizard
I'd also like to point out that the US Military will probably classify such a processor so most people don't have access to it or even know about it. I'd bet my banana that they are doing most of the funding for the QPU.
The fully quantum computer probably won't ever exist. An operating system shouldn't be in a fuzzy state... ever. Imagine it, maybe i might be running Photoshop. Anywy, my point is that quntum computers will be auxiliary chips or, when the time comes, it will be in the form of a Quantum Processing Unit (QPU). It would be like the Floating Point Unit (FPU) or the Integer Unit (IU) in a processor. The various units DO run at different speeds. Some operations take 1 cycle and others upwrds of 5 or even 10 cycles. The QPU would just take 1000 cycles for one operation.
The cycles in a QPU are deceptive because the amount of work it can do is enormous. Where it might take the IU one second to sort a list, it may take the QPU only milliseconds even at such reduced speeds.
Lastly, the hard part isn't going to be creating the QPU... there are many vectors for its creation and we know we can do it, theoreticlly. The hard part is the programming language of such a unit. Because it's based in physics in the way that it is, it would take a VERY complex and mathematical language to create the instructions for such a unit. The next step to over come is that most programmers think linerly not quantumly. It's a complete mindset change and so finding programmers for such a unit would be extremely hard. Your average joe programmer wouldn't be able to program such a unit.
There is a dump truck with a pdf white paper floting around on the series of tubes that tells the various qualities that such a quantum languge must possess but it doesn't define any language.
I don't think the problem is curse words. I heard my nephew of 12 years old say 'Shit.' He used it appropriately. Did he get that from Television? I don't think so. "Indecency" of parents is far far worse than Movies let alone TV. If these words were on TV, parents should stop kids from watching those programs. Parents are GREAT moderators of kids (at least they should be). Even if these words were used on TV there would be no great damage done as parents would curtail anything that kids say if they pick it up. Do we need the FCC to moderate curses on TV? I don't think so.
My next point is the sensationalism, and sensational waste of time that TV really is. Who here doesn't watch TV? It is SO pervasive that it is just ASSUMED that you watch. Missing an episode of {whatever} is insignificant compared to the value of missing: -time spent with kids -exercising -reading (paper or web) -INTERACTING with people
There is just so much more that people can do and be if it weren't for TV. People will NEVER get those hours back. In 5 years those shows will have been forgotten. The implications of TV on politics is incalculable. Sound bites only mean know less after having heard it than before.
Give up TV and you'll have $50 in your pocket and 80 hours recovered PER MONTH. It's like suddenly having 11% more time in the day!
How long will it take before they apply neural inhibition to the part of the brain that controls the mind-body interaction? Turn off the bodily links and you're in dream land. Control the dreams and you can create reality just like in the Matrix movies.
I was at Carnegie Mellon University back in '98 when this happened (give or take a year). This is an unconfirmed story so I'm not sure the exact details.
In the main server room for the campus there was a break room. Someone had put a toaster in there so people could eat "on the go." This one particular day someone made dark toast. When the timer ended and popped the food unit, it was out of alignment and the toast got stuck on the lip of the toaster. It kept the heating elements on and eventually it started to burn. Smoke propogated and triggered the halon system in the computer room. Thirty seconds later the room was evacuated and all the machines were automatically shut down. It took two weeks to bring all the interdependent systems back online. I don't remember exactly but it took at least 24 hours to get the email systems back up.
Toaster wins.
this would be a huge huge huge boost to DRM because it's not just that the broadcast companies would control the copies... They would want to control the copies. They would demand that TiVo open their clients systems to snooping and inspection. Then, if they wanted to be able to delete, remove a section of the show (that, say, some politician would want removed from history), or even replace portions of the broadcast then they could do this. They only license the content (subject to change).
They would want some kind of access to your machine though i find that a little less likely. But it does open the door to laws that would require content to be "registered" with the broadcast company. Say hello 1984
When you consider how in bed the corporations and the government are together, the government would see such access as their own. Seriously, the NSA would be all over that kind of access to build a further picture of your profile. Because, you know, we are all terrorists until proven innocent.
You need to remember that bios doesn't allow for some of the really cool features like booting over the network. doesn't bios require a hard drive? Why limit yourself?
Every Playstation, XBox, nintendo, gameboy, etc, etc. game is launched in stealth mode without testing it on the general public. I can think of at least one or two games that were successful in doing it this way. They have internal testers but that isn't the same as a full disclosure beta release. Even the significant PC games are launched like this. Did any one know about Half-Life before it came out with the official 1.0 release? On the flip side, do you remember the Quake betas? That was hot stuff.
In the end, make a sucky proeduct, get sucky results. It doesn't matter if it's stealth mode or not. That depends on so many variables that it is difficult to nail down (as per the comments so far). Some cases it is good to be stealth and in others it's better to have public betas.
Welcome to the hard-nosed, fast paced era of big government.
Put 1984, Gattica, and Brave New World away. You just need to look out your window.
Is the US now defining BT as a form of terrorism? I think they would. Companies enjoy the same "rights" as individuals. They shouldn't have, but they do. Technically speaking, everyone that uses BT is terrorizing our corporate brethren.
The USA is in such sad state of affairs.
I'm waiting for the day it implodes. It won't be long. Survival of the fittest. The economy is the fittest that can afford the military fittest.
I'm scared.

What is the probability of the Empire winning?

Then Homeland Security suggested building a stun gun into the ipod for a nasty shock if the finger print security check fails 3 times.

After all that is 42 in binary.... What was the question?
