    Man, readers new here from Mars would think that 911 was invented BEFORE the telephone. Just do what people did before 911...post the Sheriffs # and the Ambulance # next to your phone.

    911 is just a way to STEAL your money, and so far, all the posters here are HAPPY about that.

    So answer me this, how many of you write a little extra check every year to the IRS, your State or Local taxes??? How about give a extra $1000 this year.

    No one? Thats what I thought.

    I find that management and SQA want to treat coders like children, but ohhh do they bitch and cry when I point out that I did it PER PROCEDURE. I can't help it if you're too stupid to write company procedures CORRECTLY.

    Your comment interests me, so I will go look at that. I do have a customer who has a contnuously growing, and evil ini style config file. Something must be done.

    Go screw your own self with XML, keep it out of the configs. Learn the correct way to write and parse config files. Oh yeah, has KDE/Gnome fixed their sh^%ass XML config file? You know the one with 1 key with 80+ properties??? WRONG, go read the XML specs you dorks.

    1. VB = Very Bad. I would not develop anything in it. I have 10+ years in VB. I've fixed more messes than I care to list. I still have my 1.0 disks and manuals.

    2. Patterns don't work for 'wicked' problems. Most stuff I have ever worked was of the 'wicked' variety.

    3. Hey, you got 1. Great coders CAN code in any language. Because the language is a TOOL. Great craftsmen know how to utilize many different tools.

    Screw the Volkwagen/Audi buy a nice motorcycle.
    My 13 year old one gets 54mpg. Consumed only 400lbs of materials.

    A scooter is even better. Have you checked out the scooters these days. Some of them are really sharp.

    If the USA EPA would relax, we in the USA could get some really sweet 125cc cycles and scooters. They're cheap to buy, get great milage, look good and can get you to work fast.

    Besides when you commute to work, its just you right? How much junk do you need to carry around with you anyway?

    Me, I love riding to work.

    You were trying to be humorous, but you really swerved into the truth here.

    At some point we(the USA) will realize that no amount of being nice and fair will cut it, so we will annex Saudi Arabia and Iran/Iraq oil. Do you think those people will sit idly by while we take their oil? No, we will have to kill most of them.
    Its not without precedent, remember we did it to the Native Americans last century, uh 2 centuries ago.

    Then the Century21 and ReMax signs an go up! The 51st state, Saudi will be renamed 'Condeleza', and the 52nd state Iran/Iraq will be 'Clintonia'.

    Signs tell drivers which lots HAVE open spaces and how many are left.

    Sprints' answer to try and clear up a deception in my wifes name was to send her a document to sign.

    The document merely transferred the fraudulent account to our REAL address.

    The companies ARE part of the problem, and I am glad the fraudsters are attacking them directly.

    Well seeing as how the monetary awards to the local police ball are 'revenue' enhancers...as a 'invitee', I would prefer the car NOT allow me to speed.

    Hmm, interesting.

    Why not make cars fragile on purpose? Instead of armoring the things all over to the point where people feel 'safe' all the time and blythely bumbling along crashing into stuff.

    Make people who have 2 accidents ride a motorcycle!

    Not only would it save gas (I get 54mpg) and reduce pollution, but maybe would be an eye opener for stupid drivers in their cages.

    Sorry I disagree. There is no evidence for your claim. The genius behind blazing saddles was the writers which included Richard Pryor but not Wilder. And Cleavon Little made the movie. Young Frankenstein was written by Wilder. I see no correlation.

    As implemented at the several companies I have worked at NO. Its only marginally useful at a factory where hardware is made. Measuring the length of a wire +/- 0.5 inches is useful.

    How do you measure the usefulness of printf() versus a macro of printf, versus writing a class that wraps printf???

    Software QA I have had to work with are unseen until some huge stack of paperwork is needed just before release, where upon, all they do is point out spelling errors and the fact that the format of your requirements is wrong.

    At a minimum, software QA should be working alongside the dev team making sure the papers are right, that things are progressing, that requirements and plans are being met, not being a hurdle.

    I don't care what anyone says, software is an artform. Repeat ARTFORM. The trap is that it looks like a scientific, engineering exercise. Its not.

    Besides, Japanese cars became popular for additional reasons, not the least of which was quality, including price, and fuel economy.

    Yeah that all sounds good an all, but most companies I code for have 2 things that pretty much f&^king guarantee you and I as middle class workers will be out of a job.

    1. Stodgy management. Upper management consist of stodgy , old, micromanagers that learned this crap 20 years ago. They have no concept of product cycles, or that software is an artform.
    When you need 3-4 signatures to obtain 5 blank cd-roms, something is very wrong. I cannot be innovative after 3 signatures.

    2. Quality Assurance BS. All places I have worked that had more than 5 employees had all this QA, Total Quality, CMM Level X, "BULL4H!T". This always boils down to some 20-40% of the department employees who just suk up the overhead costs of a project. And contributed ZERO to any product being produced.

    You are right , small companies are the way to do it. But the risk is huge. And can easily mean financial ruin for your family.

    I'm still perfecting the Gay Deciever in my garage, I got the sewing machine housing and the gyro, but I can't seem to prefect capturing the 3 axes at the same time.

    So far, the time continuum is only uni-directional. :^)

    Uh, for your information, Gates donations has not wiped out malaria, or even made a dent.

    DDT nearly wiped out malaria by eradicating its carrier.

    But then a bunch of environmental asswipes moved to outlaw DDT and malaria epidemics cames back. But I really suspect that the DDT manufs were paid off by the Quanine drug manufacturers, since it also destroyed their market.

    We did this too, but CMM just hasn't improved anything here yet. We're all behind schedule, I have to spend a whole day of the week on paperwork that no one will read 2 months from now. Oh but they spent Deity knows how much $$$ on METRICS software. [HINT: I ran my own metrics with a Perl script for FREE hahahahaha]. And do not get me started on PVCS. Ack!

    This is whats demoralizing and stupifying about the US IT workplace to me. We were a successful project that managment has jumped onto so they can run us into the ground I guess.

    Instead of letting the manager manage, and the tech lead - lead. We got SQA and CMM and lots of other useless pretties.
