"toiling like galley slaves" to describe EA's programmers, and note that EA has a formal policy of hiring young, naive people who are willing to work long hours for low pay.
my favorite cvs integrated environment was textpad with a syntax file for colorizing my code, and most cvs and compile commands added to the Tools menu...
Worked way cool, and I could even make it pretend it was Brief...
I'm a techno-whore, but I pretty much always have a knee-jerk reaction to anything that tracks my personal (whatever) habits...
It's just another fucking cookie, and I can't get rid of it without tearing whatever it's embedded in apart.
RFIDs are easily used for tracking personal habits - in addition to giving aggregate totals - when you go through the checkout with whatever it is that has it and pay with "other than" cash, the association is made (or when the Radio Shack guy insists he needs your phone number and address when you buy a 69 cent set of C sized batteries)
Tivo just announced that they were going to be reporting individual viewing habits (plus the big banner ads while you fast-forward through the commercials), and my goddam knee is jerking above my head now.
Yes, the cpu serials were (kindof) stopped, not that it matters, most computer companies stick an identifying number in some other chip or bios - if you have a Gateway, they look up your computer's serial number for you. I LIKE privacy, I once tried an anonymous proxy service, and then when the trial was up, they said they were giving it away free for a year- naturally I was suspicious at what information they were selling that enabled them to run those proxy servers for free - AND my GODDAM knee flew up again!!
Privacy IS important. It may seem like people are freaking out, but once the mechanism for associating an item with a person, place, or migration or whatever is in place it's almost impossible to limit the use of that mechanism.
Imagine going on vacation to get away from all the crap of the world, only to be bombarded by ads for upgrades and travel accessories for whatever item you bought- the minute you turn on the tv in your room in St. Tropèz. Or, maybe, getting locked into a higher price bracket because they know you paid way too much the last time...
I just see it as a big pain in the ass, and if I wanted them to have the information, I'd fill out one of those little cards, and if they INSIST on having the information, then I wanna get PAID for giving it to them.
No one can imagine all the uses for this info, some are conveniences, some are hassles, and some are just downright nightmares.
In Neuromancer, Gibson pointed out that crap like this was ONE of the reasons that Chiba was so important to everyone...
Don't the av firms do this already?? If they put up a bulletin that describes every detail as to how the worm works, isn't that the first half of reverse engineering? The second half is to find a programmer and tell he/she/it that you want a process that does exactly what the worm that is so thoroughly documented does.
We can all go to the av sites and get the full rundown on a virus or worms methods of propogation and replication, plus the payload it carries and just write something that does exactly that...
I understand that Creative didn't put out the hard drive, but their engineers approved its use, and then continued to sell them knowing they were failing at an alarmingly high rate.
I've bought lots of Creative products, and the main problem I've seen is that usually they are shoddily built and they don't stand behind them: with the Zen I had, they told me I had to return it to the seller- obviously they had dumped what they had left, because they don't care if you get stuck with a piece of shit product with their name on it... (IMHO)
Maybe they've changed, we'll have to see. But, while I'll be a guinea pig for some new things, I won't be one for something from Creative...
so... if that's the case, i guess google's technologies and hardware aren't all they are touted as, and I guess all us INVESTORS should AVOID INVESTING in GOOGLE, since they are much, much, much, MUCH, MUCH SLOWER at indexing content that pretty much EVERY OTHER search engine has NO PROBLEM indexing quickly...
Now suppose you are responsible for several small children. What do you do now, genius?
I don't have a gun in the house - statistics overwhelmingly show that a gun is far more likely to kill a household member or a friend than a criminal. 43 times more likely (of course we can all get whatever statistic we want depending on whether we go to a right-winged or left-winged site - this ones from http://www.essays.cc/free_essays/d5/arn109.shtml)
The problem with guns is that you don't have a chance to burn off the rage before a bullet does its job, or we underestimate the ability of kids to pick a lock or find a gun...
While I might feel safer if I had a gun around, 43-1 odds that I would kill someone (or myself) either accidentally or in the heat of emotion who WASN'T a criminal are a little too long for me.
Yeah, everyones gonna scream "those are the irresponsible ones" or "i took a gun safety class", but so did a lot of the people in the above statistic.
maybe i'll get a taser or pepper-pellet paintball gun, or tranquilizer darts, or napalm, or sarin, or vx....
I agree with the 2nd amendment, you know, right to bear arms, state militia... etc... So, everyone who wants to own a gun should be required to join their state's national guard...
With weapons you mentioned, I'd probably put the guy down before I'd kill him ('cept the arrow and the knife)
Now suppose you are responsible for several small children. What do you do now, genius?
If I have guns, I'd do everything I could to make sure they couldn't accidentally discharge them - biometrics, if it works, trigger locks, pin codes - Whatever it takes....
I wonder why the 20gig version costs less than the 5gig version
Like I said a ways down the thread, it's the hard drives....
Check the amazon link, and go down to the customer reviews of it, and one guy talks about his drive crashing after like 2 days - I had the same experience...
I bought a Nomad Jukebox Zen NX 20 GB Digital Audio Player last Xmas, and the hard drive in it crashed while my kid was flying back to his mom's.
I checked the FAQ's they had at Creative, and one of the questions was: Can I jog with my Nomad?, and the answer was: No, but you can take long leisurely walks with it.....
So I got an iPod instead, and except for Job's habit of keeping everything a secret: like the DRM (which Real reversed-engineered - thank god for sleazy companies...), I'm pretty happy with it.
I know this is going up against the mini-pod, but if this thing is as FRAGILE as the older disk based nomads, i'd stay away... Besides, you can get a a set of headphones with a built-in fm radio for like a buck -http://www.wholesaledirectonline.com/ec215.html uhoh- this poor guys gonna get/.ed now...
So its in the nations best interest to put down some people at the expense of others because bad things happened long ago...
Not at all- as I (thought) I stated previously, the country becomes more prosperous and we spend LESS on public health and assistance programs when we use AA - in the long run, everybody benefits.
We're not talking about things that happened long ago - we're talking about prejudices and discrimination, which, whether you see it or not where you are, has before, is now, and in the future will occur.
AA was not created out of pity, or for compensation of past inequities, it was created, and is still used now, because it's good for the economy, good for scientific & technological development, good for many reasons- the list is long. It improves this country and our society in both tangible and intangible ways....
You mean I can get paid for doing this stuff?
Worked way cool, and I could even make it pretend it was Brief...
plus, Hey! FAT is phat! (not)

This is the way: http://jv.gilead.org.il/evans/illustr/pics/25-rokt .jpg
So what are we protecting the children from? Lazy parents who don't want to monitor the kids internet access?
Didn't Paul Revere and the Raiders sing this in like 1970?
Didn't they use to do the same thing with vinyl records? (except for the seti part...)
We can all go to the av sites and get the full rundown on a virus or worms methods of propogation and replication, plus the payload it carries and just write something that does exactly that...
Preferably in Forth....
I think I've heard something about this somewhere...
hang on, lemme use my Google Desktop search to see if I have anything about this....
is that near Elbonia??
Parents a Troll?!? wtf, mods?

we're all screwed now...

Ashcroft, however, is well liked by the farmers, since he prefers to anoint himself with vegetable oil...

Plus its got those Oxygen Generators underground!!! Kuato knows where they are...
