To be honest I am so bitter about the whole Element thing that Stardock could cure cancer, AIDS, and world hunger and I would still not play that game.
It was the whole Gamers’ Bill of Rights hypocrisy that burned me good.
Previous to that point, I would buy most of their games and generally be ok with the value of the purchase.
At the time Element was announced, I wanted to support Stardock and paid upfront (pre-order) based on the things Brad Wardell was saying. The Gamers’ Bill of Rights was in stark contrast to where things were going with the industry and I wanted to support a company that would state that.
And I loved MoM, so how bad could they possibly screw it up given that they had that as model to follow.
Pretty much Stardock took a dump on the game and even worse the hypocrisy of the Gamers’ Bill of Rights.
I wish I could believe Stardock would do it some justice, but likely it will be a colossal cluster F like their attempt to redo Master of Magic as Elemental.
I think I will just go back and play the original. Still amazing what Fred & Paul did given the constrains they had. The music was the best part of SC2.
There is no substitute for a powerful desk top with multiple monitors when real work needs to be done.
Having used hundreds of computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones and all the strange beasts in between, I keep going back to the desktop when I need to actually get some real work done.
For Techno-masturbation each to their own, but I don’t see the desktop going away anytime soon for the real work.
Hell I have gone back to using paper and pencil for most of my design/draft work as I find the interface easy to use. On the second draft I use the desktop tools to finish off what I need.
Frankly dealing with all the touch interfaces, pinching, swiping, licking, whatever is a hindrance to productivity and puts them in the “play” category for the time being.
I bought one with the intention of trying it out and returning it.
Its actually pretty good for what I need. Great display, get all my BB functions on it.
Ebook and PDF reading is decent. Uses my BB mobile internet access for web browsing.
The OS feels solid and polished. The 7" size is perfect, I find at 10" I may as well have a netbook or laptop.
The media loves to dog pile on both losers and winner.
Don't be an isheep, try it and make your own mind.
I agree with your comments whole heartily.
I have no issues with Aliens and the themes inherit with Ripley the Warrior and Ripley the mother.
In fact I really enjoyed her casting as the figure of Artemis in the movies. Good story telling is being able to spin the classic tales for a new generation.
Not to be confused with the fanboy worship Whedon seems to have for anime style story telling for all his projects.
And I agree that he needs to be beaten for blaming Jeunet for his shity script.
Well if Joss does it I can tell the focus will be on the Wasp as she struggles in a man's superhero world.
Expect some drama about love/sex with the villain and eventually she will discover after being abused that she has small sun inside her that will go nova and she will destroy/kill everything.
Bastard ruined Aliens for me with all the Motherhood/Feminist bullshit he laid on Ripley's character. Those themes were in Alien 2 also, but not quite the sled hammer Joss likes to employ.
All his stories are the same: about some abused woman/girl who discovers she has superpowers and then proceeds to eviscerate everything in site.
The guy is a hack, not the worst, but certainly doesn't not deserve the credit geekdom seems to give him.
I worked about 10 years in IT and eventually got laid off due to the usual BS.
I took a good 4 months to do some research and soul searching on exactly what was keeping me in IT.
Nothing really other than I felt this was were I ought to be. Do yourself a favour and divorce the thing that makes you money and the things you love.
Its my love of Computers and Technology that I pursued a CS degree and got into some serious student loans and ended up working in IT as a slave to idiot masters. The layoff was the best thing that ever happed. It made me evaluate life goals, work, money and the balance I really needed.
I ended up retooling myself to become a Business Analyst in the Banking Industry and found I make a lot more money and get treated much better in an established Industry than the relatively young IT. Also I found my CS Education and IT background gave me a significant edge in performance over people coming in from other streams. Computers are pretty much a part of every high level endeavour, your IT talents will be useful.
Guess what I am saying is if you love IT, but don't want to end up in the grind, aim for a double specialization and you will find you can still do IT along side your other job.
As someone working the banking industry the quick answer I can give you is that they in theory keep the price honest for securities. Same reason short sales are allowed and other such strategies that seem on the surface "damaging" but are necessary to keep the market fluid and honest.
Say a security is over valued, the day traders will ensure that it gets corrected by shorting the crap out of it. Same thing if under valued, they will buy it until it reaches an equilibrium point. The role I think they play is insuring information gets factored in the market as fast as possible thus making the market efficient.
All right I admit that all of the issues I have with the plot problems can be hand waved away...and some creative explanations that don't happen in movie time will get to the desired version Scott wants.
My main point was the that film is a collaborative process and in the case of Blade Runner for once it came out right. It was not the vision Scott had, but so what, the final product was great. Let it be.
If directors had their way, we would have 300 min films all the time. Look at Peter Jackson's King Kong, could have used a good editor. But after the success of LOR, he will have his way and no mere "editor" can cut any of his "genius" from the final print.
And lets no forget the Lucas "revisionist" film making issues with director's cuts.
Final print seems to mean nothing anymore. They should go with software version numbers.
Guess I am just a 1.0 realse fan of Blade Runner:)
Seriously I am getting tired of this "Is he human or replicate" crap.
For the story to work, he needs to be human. Otherwise all kinds of plot problems open up. Like if he was a replicate, how come he sucks so much in a fight?
All the other models kick the shit out of him--including the so called pleasure models.
And does not explain if he escaped with the other models on the spaceship, why don't they know him?
And if he is a special model like Rachel, why the hell does Tyrell not know this?
As great as certain writers/directors/artists are, editors/media engineers exist for a reason. There are times when the "creative vision/crack pipe dream" needs to be reeled in to make something work.
For Blade runner, seeing Deckard as human is critical because it explores the question more deeply of what it is to be human. Putting in Ridley's directory cuts takes away the internal dialogue of the voiceover and makes Deckard some kind of action hero. Really changes the movie too much in my opinion.
Personally I think voice over adds a lot to the story, I would even go far as to say it makes the real crux of the story possible with the internal dialogue we have of the characters. The editing done to the original film makes it what it is. It will be the only version of the film for me. Nice that I can finally buy it a decent format.
Film is a collaborative process, and in this case the sum did indeed produce something better than the single vision of the director. Ridley needs to let it go at that and stop stirring the shit.
I work at a University where the IT staff are in a union. All it does is protect the lazy, useless, and incompetent. The result of unions has been shuffling useless staff around to positions where they can't damage critical systems. Now they just coast for the rest of their life to retirement. The real work is done by part-time contract people at much lower pay, no benefits and are let go every so often to please the union as the contract workers are perceived as a threat to their full time jobs. The university has a rich pool of talent to draw from for IT work (Computer & Engineering department).
So it goes that the fat-ass, lazy, people keep chalking up more benefits, raises and demand for less working hours and the work shifts to more talented people who get paid less and have no job security at all other than a revolving door of 1 year contracts at the lowest wages and no benefits. Not sure who I hate more the unions for making this happen or the university for exploiting the loop hole of rich talent pool for unlimited contract working conditions.
Also the union here for IT is represented by the Steel Workers union--I have no idea what the hell they have to do with IT. My guess is they get more members, collect more fees and become another layer of government we have to deal with to get a job...
Why not have an actual NASA person do the intro?
It's a pretty sad joke when you need the Captain of a failed fictional show to generate hype about the return to space for manned missions. Cause you know an actor is far more qualified than a Rocket Scientist to tell you about the importance of the Space Shuttle in the endeavor of space exploration.
What ass-clown in NASA PR team is responsible for this?
It's revolting that NASA needs to resort to Flash-porn and hype. Damn you unwashed masses!
It is so sad. I have wandered down the same path as you my jaded friend. Now I say fuck the unwashed masses and their ignorance. The only commodity I can not get back is my time. Why should I waste it on people who do not even want to consider an alternative to the slavery they support. Its funny, I use to care so much about fighting the good fight for the global good and making the right moral choices even at significant cost. Wasting endless hours helping people access technology to "build a better world." Use to think one day the geek revolution would come and then we could stick it to those CEO shit bags. Sadly after getting my degrees and working 60-70 hour weeks in the IT mining pits to pay off the student loans, has made me seriously fucking bitter about technology. Was it ever a promise of a better world, or just dope induced BS of the deluded brotherhood in college. When the hell did we become yuppie scum bending over backwards to whore ourselves out to manager/wealses. Parent has the right idea, start your own business and stop trying to evangelize to the dumb-shits and the corporations own them. I need to get drunk tonight to numb myself from this sad state...
What the hell is going on?
When did slashdot start defending anything by MS. Come on people, SP2 sucks, linux is better...blah..blah...nazi bastards pushing SP2 down our throats and breaking my old ass apps...
Shutup and patch it's good for you.
Just wondering if you might be Dan Barclay. kind of funny since I lived with a roommate in second year who had the same name and family motto. He was not really into computers...unless you count surfing for porn;)

So yeah F-you Brad Wardell.

Get off that service and switch to something local. In Toronto area Teksavvy has unlimited plan for cheaper than Rogers or Bell.
Seriously lets get on with solving some real problems...
Yeah or hating Jews.

I don't know...that kind of turns me on...gives it that interactive feeling when getting it on with the ol' computer.
