If the format is free of patents, and is essentially open source (released under the BSD license)... how can Nokia shake its finger around and threaten people?
This wouldn't be a story if Microsoft had done it, trying to force WMP codecs into the standard - I'm actually kind of surprised they hadn't yet... but Nokia? wtf
Growing up in a small rural area, I knew people just like Clevon. And they were regarded as the alpha males because they were good at sports. Some got a free ride to state college for their physical skills. Unfortunately they didn't complete the first year of college because they treated it like high school...
Yes, it's scary.
I got one, here's how:

Where are Wii?

I wrote up a good explanation on how to score a wii:
That movie was an interesting look on today's society. The evolution of Fuddruckers was hilarious. Mike Judge's future was really thought out, let's hope aliens that happen by at that time just wipe us out and put us out of our misery.
The medical center scene reminds me of a joke...
Q. What's the difference between an oral probe and a rectal probe?
And I couldn't take the performance hit of XP, compared to 2000...
In fact, I still miss NT4, but there's just too much software that doesn't work on it anymore.
Interesting, XP SP1 was when I converted from 2k and didn't notice much after turning off the themes, menu transitions, and transparency options in the windows.
But I can say without a doubt, I don't miss the BSODs of NT4.
If they make the MMORPG using the spirit of the RPG that FASA made back in the 90's, it would reach so many genres it would almost be a sure hit with most gamers.
A quality game engine, incorporating all of the popular concepts of the game - magic, cybernetics, vehicle combat, and cyberspace.
But I fear the task would be too big and risks too high for most game companies to even consider, it'll be a dream of many who have played the RPG version of Shadowrun.
I ran with the factory Vista Ultimate image on my T61p (Core Duo 2.4Ghz 2GB Ram) for a month, and couldn't take the performance hit compared to XP on my R52 (Single Core 1.8Ghz 2GB Ram).
After reading about the 1% perf increases of Vista SP1, I decided that wasn't good enough and nuked Vista, and installed XP - it's like I've weighed anchor and hoist ye misen mast.
Laptops are rarely backed up. Even if they are its typically only what the user wants to backup. Archiving files at the server level (email, web, and ftp proxies) would be the better choice.
And why didn't this guy just do a simple google search and use a DBAN boot disk? Moron had to call for help...
I'm not opposed to companies making money by any means, but let's at least be honest with ourselves that Google isn't doing this out of a sense of altruism.
If by making a sick amount of profit they can build and deploy a wireless service that is better, cheaper, and faster than any available from current suppliers - more power to them.
Boss: Your review was really harsh on our biggest client. Editor: So? The game was a festering turd with a large ad budget. Boss: I don't like your tone. Editor: F&*@ you, how do you like that tone? Boss: You're fired.
I ran Vista on a core duo 2.4Ghz with 2GB of ram and a whopper of a video card... it seemed fast enough, but file management performance was abysmal.
Do I really need a progress bar when I move one 20kb file to the trash?
Do I really need HD DRM to do my job at work? Oh, don't worry - the network file transfer performance will improve if you just pause your iTunes music playback.
I nuked the install and installed XP last night (many of my apps I use for work are Windows only...) and haven't looked back since. The performance increase is nothing less than amazing.
This is really nothing new, Windows 9x, 2k, and XP were all turds when they were first released. Driver maturity, application refinements, hardware improvements, and service packs all make the experience more tolerable.
But I'm sick of the status quo and expected a much better OS when Vista was first released. If it took 9 months of driver development and OS improvements - then it shouldn't have been released 9 months early.
Active sonar might be restricted due to the adverse effects on marine life - but you bet it would have been used if we were at (real) war.
For now though, can't we use passive metal detection? I'm not even close to being an expert, but it would seam to me that a large metal object in the water should be detectable - somehow.
TDS is listed as a mirror for US downloads, but fails to have the latest ISO. Since I'm a customer, I'd love to be able to save them some peering bandwidth and grab it locally but apparently they fail to have it posted.
If they're trying to get it from another mirror - maybe they should grab a torrent like I did. I had the desktop iso in about 15 minutes.
Combination of Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 making a killing on the console market and the pre-Christmas season spending lull. I expected a drop in console sales for any platform that didn't have a fresh killer game like Halo 3.
Everyone I've talked to that owns a Wii is still playing the Wii sports and some of the original games, but are fully prepared to lay down some hard cash for Nintendo's holiday releases.
I love how this gets rolled into a major fud story.
Yes, but would they actually do that? There's a hell of a lot more money to be made by treating the symptoms, rather than curing the disease.
Sure they would.
The pharmaco would patent the cure and price it at about 50-70% the average cost of lifelong diabetes care today so the insurance companies would more likely pay for it.
With obesity rates climbing like they are today, there will be no lack of profit.
This type of tech has been in use for twenty years (or more) to find leaks in coolant lines and radiators used in air conditioning systems installed in everything from homes, businesses, and vehicles.
With that being said, even with decades of improvements - it's still a tedious task that can be time consuming and prone to false positives. This new implementation with multiple sensors will give the system a much higher success rate in less time - and when you're in an aluminum can a few hundred miles from the nearest breath of air, you want to find the source of your air leak as fast as possible.
Why would you pay the price of your new laptop again just for the software, when all you want to do is really basic things?"
I buy a new laptop for a better laptop... not the OS that comes with it. More faster everything in a smaller package on a bigger screen with the latest tech like WAN modems, all flavors of wifi, and a new crisp keyboard.
Com'on... you know you all love that new keyboard feel and new hardware smell, it's geek-crack.
There's no need to compete with Exchange... why fight the 700 pound gorilla in its own cage? You're going to get threaded through the bars and tied in a knot. Make a client that businesses can support out of the box - no matter what current email system they're using.
Here's my wishlist....
For starters: Mozilla needs to create a good client that interfaces with Outlook Web Access (like Evolution on Linux, but better), webmail providers like Gmail and Yahoo, and does all the various secured and unsecured flavors of POP/SMTP/IMAP.
Make the inbox a universal inbox with lots of ways to filter, tag, and organize email.
Implement a universal calendar that can accept Exchange and iCal appointments (and send them!). Also give the calendar its own seperate application/service/daemon so that it can run independently of the full blown client - and send updates to mobile devices via email/textpage/sms/whatever
Include to that list of requirements a contact list or address book that can give a user many ways to organize their list of people and addresses.
Make backups of existing local data easy. Maybe not in one file (like the OST), but please encrypt it or give users the option of encrypting it.
Oh and just to seal the deal: include Palm and PocketPC conduits for syncing data.

If we could somehow exchange a hundred Barry Bonds for one more Stephen Hawking, we'd be crazy not to.
With or without the asterisk?

It's already worked for me and three other co-workers... YMMV.

A. The taste.

So is this the end of the flight attendent shpeal that goes something like this:
"OMG WTF!? Turn off all your wireless devices or we'll all die!"

Who ever tagged this story "claters" deserves a mod point... only if I could.
I'm still chuckling about that.

I don't think you realize, but afaik Jeff Gerstmann was the highest ranking member of the editorial staff, thus he is the boss.
There's always someone higher.
I didn't rtfa, but most don't.
:)
Here's how it may have gone down.
Boss: Your review was really harsh on our biggest client.
Editor: So? The game was a festering turd with a large ad budget.
Boss: I don't like your tone.
Editor: F&*@ you, how do you like that tone?
Boss: You're fired.
Same end result - different reason.
Last time I checked, there was not 404 Democrats in the house. So a vote of 404 to 6 would most likely include Republicans as well.
And I'd like to know why the 6 voted against it - after RTFA (you did, didn't you?) it seems like the bill is worthy of passing.

XP was a huge improvement compared to 98SE when it was released, even before any service packs.
Only because it was based on Windows 2000 (with service packs). Remember 2000 is Windows version 5.0 and XP is Windows version 5.1.
Even though it was built on 2k's code, XP was still not well received until after the first service pack fixed some mighty large security issues.
This is really nothing new, Windows 9x, 2k, and XP were all turds when they were first released. Driver maturity, application refinements, hardware improvements, and service packs all make the experience more tolerable.
