The bible does not include that "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish quote." Those who would prefer not to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and clothe the naked like to use that quote, because it suggests all poverty comes from ignorance. A convenient excuse to do nothing. Those $100 laptops could make a huge difference in the life of a third world student. Beats the hell out of a one room school with nothing but 20 year old national geographics for textbooks. Bill Gates doesn't like it because somebody else thought of it first.
The absurd aspect of all this, is that elected politicians of either party, do NOT represent their constituents. They march to the drumbeat of their financial contributors. Election finance reform, REAL election finance reform is the only way the U.S. will ever return to a representative form of government. The Repubs and Demos can blather all they want about who's right or wrong. For now, they really are just mouthing slogans and platitudes. Why is it that multinational corporations, unions, professional groups and PACs can give ANY money to candidates or campaigns? They can't vote, and they are not people. Only registered voters should be able to contribute. Anyone who doesn't recognize this needs to watch The Matrix one more time and this time, think about who is really running it.
One of the most informative and somewhat chilling documentaries on the subject: The Future of Food. Shows clearly how a few multinational corporations have taken over most of the global food supply. Should be of interest to anyone who eats: http://thefutureoffood.com/
The quality and content of the story should determine whether you use it or not. Methinks the Slashdot editors are too deep in the trees to see the forest. I pay attention to who submitted the story maybe once in... a thousand reads. The story is the thing. That's why I use Slashdot in the first place.
Interestingly, one of the main stock information sites Google brings up when you type in a stock symbol is Yahoo Finance, one of Google's main competitors. You don't have to type in a nasdaq stock. Type in the symbol of any US stock and you will get the results. FDX or IBM for example.
Yes he will take SUNW private. They really have no choice. The requirements of a public company are weighing heavily on Sun now and the competition is too fierce for them to survive much longer, unless they divest themselves of public-ness and go back into private, guerilla tactics. When a CEO goes to the Wall Street Journal to pointedly deny a rumor, the odds are much higher that he's lying, than that he's not.
Actually the Slashdot headline is misleading. Apple has not won until the writers ordered to reveal their sources capitulate. As of now, they have not.
Google Groups is a disaster. I have practically stopped using Usenet since they took it over. It is a mess, very unfriendly to users and appears to me to be a deliberate effort to wipe out Usenet. I expect to see a "pay" information system emerge from this mess by who other than... Google.
Journalism and the "truth" are all a matter of perspective. Moyers has been one of the best "truth tellers" of the last couple of decades. As for the perspective issue.. to wit: http://www.cafepress.com/ndnpress.5358989?zo om=yes #zoom
Considering the documentary Fahrenheit 911 has taken in more than 119-million dollars in ticket sales so far, more than many Hollywood "entertainment" movies, there would be no shortage of takers for the movie on television. Right offhand, many cable channels would bid for it. Plus, it's likely CBS would be interested. ABC, owned by Disney, hmmm let me see... ah, probably not, eh?
Box office numbers are here:

Dogma and Chasing Amy were OK. But a sequel of Clerks? Reminds me of a crowd cheering and calling for an encore of an American Idol runner-up. Just don't ask me to watch it...
Watch the British arts and popular culture far surpass the US in creativity and innovation in the coming years since they do not have the stranglehold copyright law that we do. The only group the US law benefits is multinational corporations. Absurd.
As this chart shows, Red Hat stock is now consolidating. When it clearly begins to move up on slightly higher volume, you'll know the big institutional companies are buying back in big time. I expect that will happen as soon as next week. Anyone at all familiar with Red Hat knows it has top notch management and this is just a temporary sideshow. http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/SC.w eb?c=rhat,u u[w,a]daclyiay[db][pb50!b200!f][vc60][iLa12,26,9!L g]&pref=G
Opportunistic lawyers just going for bucks from the company, hoping for a settlement or that they can turn up something negative. If we required the Lawyers to pay a company's legal damages when no merit to their case is found, there would be a lot fewer of these. Anyway these are so common, most companies have legal contingencies built into their expense budgets. A shame. But Red Hat will most likely come out smelling like a rose. Actually created a good buying opportunity for anyone interested in their stock, IMHO.
There's nothing on commercial radio worth recording anyway. Let them fight it out. I'll just make sure I attend at one or two live concerts every summer by local bands. Can't digitize them.
Why hasn't the Federal Government jumped on this technology to further develop and commercialize it? If they can do this with turky waste, they can do it with many other forms of waste including sewage.
Enterprise is better this year. They really changed the whole look and feel of the show. Colors and textures on the set are darker. The Captain has more of an edge, and is no longer a simple minded do gooder. And the resident sexpot has held up well. I am even starting to find her attractive! Moving it to Friday nights would be a bummer, but the olde VCR still works fine.
The idea of a show set in the near future is pretty cool and interesting, but this one is just junk. Like we need another touchy-feely panting beween the desks law show....
The mozilla browsers are great. I think they are the best browsers out there. I only use MicroBorg Explorer now for a couple of MSN sites that have been set up to only work well with their propietary junk browser.
Forbes uses the fax thing as an example, but they are correct in their efforts to point out how lawyers and other abusers of court resources and time cause a huge waste of time and money in the U.S. It is ridiculous that we have not by now passed some realistic tort reform in this country.
Foundations are one of the most overlooked forces for good in the country. The MacArthur Foundation makes great use of that money they have invested. These awards are a great positive thing to have in our society..even if one might not completely agree with each and every one. Who cares. Overall they are doing very good works with their money.
Tempest in a teapot. Why not only provide slow-speed connections to the dorms. So that if a student was inclined to download an mp3 it would take them 8 hours. But for such things as email (without attachments), or academic programs, it would work just fine.
Comparing Torvalds to Lessig is like comparing a falcon to a goat. Won't work. Two different animals. Different goals. Different vision. Both are very good at what they do, however.

If the portable reciever does indeed have a record mode, this would be a tech leap forward. And I would buy one and subscribe. No doubt about it.

The guy is clearly engaging in fraud, both in state and across state lines. Where are the feds and local cops? Very bizarre situation.
