  1. for the investment inclined.. on Red Hat Posts Its Best Quarter Yet · · Score: 1

RHAT's earnings growth is way better than most financial analysts expected. And it is really just beginning to accelerate. Their large partners ie IBM ORCL and others just now have their sales forces actually primed to begin bundling RHAT with their solution packages. So don't be surprised if earnings growth continues to accelerate over the next several years. And what is the key driver of stock prices? Earnings of course. All else is noise. Foreign markets starting to kick in too...

  2. the defense industry phenomenon on American Science: Addicted to Pentagon Cash? · · Score: 1

Of course many scientists are addicted to Pentagon cash. Where else will they get money to fund various research projects? Remember, the "Defense Industry" as we know it did not even exist until after World War II. It has now succeeded in squeezing out most other competing government initiatives. Why hasn't the government launched a major funding initiative to develop alternative energy sources? Why there's not enough money left over after the Pentagon submits its budget, of course. To parse an old phrase.. bad money chases out good money every time.

  3. Re: Science fiction? on 2003 Hugo Award Winners Announced · · Score: 1

Yes, the Truman Show is probably the best true Science Fiction movie to come out in the last several years. Precisely because it does NOT feature futuristic robots, interstellar light drives and Wookies.
It is much more plausible Science Fiction and very entertaining as well. Anyone noticing how--ahem-- real television is rapidly following Truman's example now?

  4. still plenty of links.. on Google Removes Links in Response to DMCA Complaint · · Score: 1

It's an interesting story, and troubling that google is once again positioning itself as a censor..but I still found plenty of links for downloading kazaa lite, if I had wanted to. Just a little more creativity involved is all.

  6. rechargeables work fine... on Rechargeable Batteries - Yes or No? · · Score: 1

I've been using rechargeables for such things as digital camera (a real battery eater), CD player and Palm pilot. Also a couple of wall clocks. They work well and have no problems. We use both panasonic and Rayovac Ni-MH with a Rayovac charger. Has saved much money and hopefully does something to benefit the environment too.

  7. a new hot button that bush may not expect on House Overturns FCC Media Consolidation Plan · · Score: 1

Media consolidation could well turn out to be a new "third rail" of american politics for Bush. No way congress would be rolling back the FCC ruling which allows multinational conglomerates to buy more TV stations, unless there was major pressure from voters. This gets the most interesting diverse groups riled up. Folks from neandertal neocons to women's libbers are against GE Disney Rupert Redstone et al from gobbling up more TV stations. They have good reason to be against it. Just scan the FM dial, for a preview.

  8. What is the problem? on Sen Hatch Would Like To Destroy Filetraders' PCs · · Score: 1

If technology enabled individuals to steal other's property, what is the problem with technology that prevents them from doing that? Those who cry foul are just using a convenient double standard.

  9. Quit! on 12/7 and Overtime on a Salary? · · Score: 1

QUIT! If you are legally in the salaried category there is nothing you can do, except tell them to bite the big one. If enough of you do it, they might get the message. Obviously the folks running this company are assuming you are all sheep and they can get away with this.

  10. Matrix Reloaded on Review: Matrix: Reloaded · · Score: 1

On a scale of one to ten, I'd give it a four. They got lazy. Special effects trumped plot and scripting. The freeway sequence was exciting, but about 8 minutes too long. It was filler. They spent a zillion dollars on the setup for that sequence and they were gonna get their money's worth out of it.
Sorry... if it were a food, the Matrix Reloaded would be a greasy cheeseburger.

  11. Re:Will DVD Be Around In 20 Years? on Preserving VHS Recordings For Another 20 Years? · · Score: 1

That's way too much trouble. A three quarter inch machine? Are you kidding? That stuff degrades as fast as VHS.
The practical answer would be to convert to DVD or as a video file and save to CD. Then when newer technology comes along, convert it to that. At least there will be no degradation of digital files, unlike the magnetic tracks on a video tape.

  12. Re:DVD's still a little life left in them on The Future of Digital Video? · · Score: 1

But you can pay for a VOD movie once and record it while you watch. It is extra easy to do this since you usually have access to the movie for at least eight to 12 hours. So you can watch a movie, kick in your TIVO or VCR, start recording and go to bed. Then you have the re-playable movie at no extra cost.
I do think high capacity blue laser DVDs will keep the medium alive for awhile longer, but VOD is a major new medium to be reckoned with.

  13. keeping my old epson on Are Printers What They Used To Be? · · Score: 1

I've got an old Epson Stylus Photo EX. It is a workhorse and prints great images. I intend to keep it until it dies or the cartridges are no longer available for it. I did notice that Epson has not gotten around to updating the driver for XP on this printer. Another slimey way for them to try and force purchase of a new printer I suppose.
But there are workarounds for that.

  16. best way to boycott... on Would a Boycott of the MPAA/RIAA Help Matters? · · Score: 1

The best way to boycott is to get out and go to live performances of local groups, musicians, drama groups, art exhibits etc. You are also then spending your money on a local venue and keeping much more of your money in your own community where it supports local governments, charities and the local economy.
Why send your dollars to conglomerates halfway across the planet when you can vote with your wallet locally? We also try to buy local products from locally owned and operated merchants whenever possible.

  20. Why I still use windows.... on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

Only one reason: I use my computers for business and unfortunately in my line of work, Linux and Apple applications are simply not available. Every tried to trade stocks or manage a portfolio with anything but a windws program? Not likely. It is a shame that non-microsoft developers have not been able to address this. If I could download a Linux program from MBTrading.com, Windows would be off this PC in a heartbeat.
