  1. Call it media incest... that's what it is. on Tragedy, Media and Marketing · · Score: 1

The consolidation of news and publishing companies into conglomerates multiples cross promotion and media incest. Example: Would Time Magazine have featured the ladies from HBO's "Sex and the City" on it's front cover, if Time Warner did not own HBO?
The story was about urban singles. Would Time have even covered the subject based on legitimate news judgment? A problem in recognizing ersatz news is in realizing what legitimate news was not covered.

  2. Do both, digitize and make prints on To Digitize or Not Digitize the Family Photo Album? · · Score: 1

I have a used HP Photosmart S20 scanner, bought for less than $150. It makes extremely high quality photo scans of anything up to 5 x 7. It also scans negatives and slides! I also have an Epson Stylus PhotoEX printer, purchased used for less than $150, which produces pro-grade photo prints. The real expense here is in the photo paper. But if you get organized, and print out pages with lots of smaller photos on them, then insert them into photo album binders, you then have pictures you can readily pull out from the bookshelf or coffee table and share with folks, while you have preserved the larger images for longer term on your computer. Good idea to save the images on a CD as well, however, for that inevitable day when they will need to be transferred to some other medium. Unfortunately, todays regular photo prints don't hold up as well as old ones. Its a combination of paper and process. I have some family photos from the 1800s that are in better shape than some photos from the 1970s. It is work, but should be worth it to your family and your descendants in the long run.

  3. my heart bleeds for him... on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

Give me a break. The guy uses studio electronics and sampling to crank out huge sellers? If he was smart he'd release an album for free on the web and invite music geeks to sample and create their own. Now that would win him a true following.

  4. Like an oasis in the desert.. on AudioGalaxy Reaches Settlement With the RIAA · · Score: 1

A new file sharing program will surface. The music industry is now in full whack-a-mole mode.
But there are way too many moles. Fresh water keeps bubbling up at new locations in the desert from time to time. And a new oasis is created.
Then keepers of the status quo who sell water, try to pave it with concrete. But then...somewhere in the desert, a new font of fresh water begins to bubble up.

  5. Re:The maddening thing... on First Maglev Installation Going Up · · Score: 1

The US cannot develop any meaningful alternate transporation system to amount to anything because of the way we allow companies and special interests to finance our politicians. The oil industry and the road construction industry have them all in their hip pockets. They scream about the high cost of commuter rail or development of such alternatives as fuel cells, even though the gas taxes we pay in this country do not come close to paying for our ever increasing web of concrete and asphalt highways.

  6. Star Wars Otherworldly? Imagine that.... on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 1

Katz is weighing way too heavily on this. These are movies for heaven's sake. Spiderman was a hoot. Star Wars is now drudgery. But I wouldn't call it a failure. And an epic film set in another part of the universe in another time should have an otherworldly feel to it. Katz needs to get out of New York for awhile. 9/11 does not dominate American culture the way he thinks.

  7. Forerunner of the monster battle robots in Matrix? on X-45 Makes Debut Flight · · Score: 1

These robot planes give an old soldier like me cold chills. Soon we will be able to wreak havoc on other nations and peoples with nary a scratch on our own people. That will be wonderful until our enemies start using them on us. Then we'll be right back where we started. Throwing rocks then running back into the cave...
These automated planes are nothing but the forerunnners of the fearsome tentacled war robots in the Matrix. Loathesome...!

  8. Re:Gattaca: Yes; Jurassic Park, etc: No on The Wired Top Twenty Sci-Fi Movies · · Score: 1

I agree Gattaca is a great movie. Ranking anything like the best Sci Fi movies is going to have intrinsic problems, but I think the three point approach Wired used is as good as any I have seen, tipping the hat to the braniacs, the action fans and the control freaks. An extra good thing about Gattaca is the development of character; which is done far more intelligently than in most Sci Fi flicks.

He writes: TheEmpire doesn't want slaves or destruction or "evil." It wants order.
So did the great fascists of the just past century, like Mussolini and Franco. The Starwars freedom fighters are more like the American Revolutionaries. The Empire is more like the Brits at the height of their cruel dominion, or Pol Pot in Cambodia.

Actually, New York City local news really sucks. There are 20 markets in the country that have better quality local news than NYC. Here's the solution, let anyone distribute any TV program they like..but make them pay for it.. subject to negotiation. No agreement.. no distribution. The entire cable/satellite industry is based on piracy anyway.

Just because this search approach would not work with lousy commercial websites, does not mean it wouldn't be great for academic searches and the types of pages that DO link to related subjects. This could be a MAJOR step forward in the cause of online knowledge base building and serious research.

  14. Re:Not like it matters these days... on More Media Consolidation Coming Soon · · Score: 1

We are facing a likely judicial and civil war over who controls information in our society. This is just another step in that direction. It started with the "deregulation" of broadcasting in the early 80's and continues unabated today. The consolidated media will fulfil a role first clearly outlined in that frightening novel "1984".
The timing was a bit off... the total lock on information flow probably won't come until 2054..but unless we fight it aggressively..it may come sooner.

  17. trivial crap on Attack of the Clones · · Score: 1

This is trivial crap. Slashdot is supposed to be stuff that matters. Who the hell cares about the cast of the new Star Wars, without seeing the movie then deciding? I was kinda hoping they'd feature Michael Jackson somewhere in there, myself.

  18. a cheap way to try out HDTV on To HDTV or Not to HDTV? · · Score: 1

Here is an inexpensive way to try out HDTV on your PC:

I for one, would not buy a full HDTV receiver right now, because there is some doubt whether the FCC is going to succumb to special interest groups and postpone HDTV implementation indefinately.

  19. Re:Flawed arguments on Do Digital Photos Endanger History? · · Score: 2, Interesting

To me, the HUGE problem with the advent of digital, and the technology is the ability to fake images. It was very difficult and cumbersome to change images around the film development process. And experienced lab folks could always spot them.
But with digital, you can make all kinds of changes, then make copies, which are basically flawless. Does not bode well for the historic record a few centuries down the road. Technology marches on....

My prescription: Watch only a few minutes a day.
Scan your paper for only really significant new facts in the headlines. And read your weekly newsmagazines which still have time to give their content some perspective.
