I'm only a web developer, so I'm not the sharpest tool in the box.
I never realised that; "companies that spend less in order to get more... will likely be the big winners."
This has to be some business related thing that us in the web industry never realised. Can someone enlighten me? Perhaps their are a few BS grades reading this post?
I obtained my degree from this course back in the day.
I can honestly say that for a creative Geek, this course is beyond comparison. This years degree show http://www.sharperdesign.co.uk/about.html may give you an indication of the work produced.
We were expected to learn everything from life drawing to fabrication skills (wood, metal, casting, plastic etc) through to PIC programming (machine code - not your new fangled C stuff).
It always makes my laugh (having graduated this course) at some of the hardware hacks projects seen on the web sites like/. and hackaday. Us Brunel Design grads could produce all of it (fully working prototypes required), and make it look pretty.
The idea is that the course is based on Bauhaus principal. If you design with materials then you need to know how to work with them. Instead of digging our own clay we'd fabricate our own boards.
Some of my favourites projects include;
A pulse jet powered scooter, Cocktail making machine, Sound to Firework control system, Regenerative bike break, and the infamous machine that makes hats out of ballons.
HIHOPS: Alright PT , still getting your name on the BBC then?
Your missing a trick here. Your seem to assume that the industry is one or a number of entities.
As far as I see its a large number of companies with a huge number of individuals all acting with competing goals.
Their will always be conflict and disagreements. I think the best analogy of the ents industry would be/. itself. When was the last time their was complete agreement in any discussion?
Generally I agreem, I did get a reply from one person, who was abit anoyed with all the test email a script of mine was sending to him.
Since my own domain will forward any emails to my main account I usually use things like examplesite@mydomain.com if the spam gets too bad I can identify which site is a spam-pot.
However if I need to register a throw away account with some site that I know will send tonnes of spam, I will generally use one of their email address if they dont need verifying eg. to register on spam-pot.com (don't know if exists) I would use admin@spam-pot.com
For other sites I use what I call my porn account (otherwise known as hotmail).
On the M25, the car park that circles London, grid lock is caused be idiots who ignore variable speed limits and encourages said drivers to put their foot down and lane jump. The road is constantly monitored by CCT and the "your taking the piss, if only" speed indicator set accordingly. The resulting crush of commuters is a source of amusement by the operators who watch from air-conditioned offices. In the rush hour the average speed is reduced to 5 mph as apposed to the usual speed of 50mph and this, some how, is called a transport policy in the UK. Also there's usually congestion at junction 15 and this will cause problems for Junction 16 - 18,19,20 - 24, and 25 - 14 the speed limit will be reduced further to 0mph. This helps us Brits to remember the scene in turnin during the Italian Job.
Great advice this, I took an industrial/product design degree and the focus on portfolio work has stood me in good stead.
Ok so I'm only a perl/web dev monkey but showing up to an interview showing examples of coding and thought processes is a such a good start.
For christs sake don't just bring along A4 print outs of code or you'll just scare people. Good diagrams, code structure and evidence of work practices is what interviewees are trying to look for.

Sorry, but can someone help me?

Me and my mate Hiro were discussing this the other night in our local (The Black sun).
My thought was that I would'nt want to waste time, personally I rather read a good book!
