Around 1945, by coincidence I'm sure, the number of deaths by war has dropped to about a million per year and it has stayed there ever since.

Let me get this straight, you draw an analogy of the course of human history to 1945 compared to 1945 to now, and proclaim that the world is safer because the number of deaths due to wars have leveled off?

    Are you crazy?

I'm glad you aren't running the nuclear program with your terrible use of "statistics" to make a point.

That fact is, as we progress for the next 300 years, more and more countries with less and less regard for their lives and ours will obtain nuclear weapons technology, and just as the machine gun revolutionized combat, nuclear weapons will become a common staple of choice for all nations who arm themselves. Just because they are behind the technology curve today doesn't mean they won't catch up soon... and comparing that timeframe to the beginning of human civilization, the relative nature in terms of time is frightening.

Remember the machine gun analogy above? Show me any nation that isn't armed with one today.

    That is what I thought.

So, you are wrong, parent was right...If there were no nuclear weapons, the world would be a safer place.

.. but how will they staff it?

I think the Wiki concept is perfect for a niche application, such as documenting a software process, or a software project, or some other specific topic that has a focus. I use a number of corporate Wikis and hobby related wikis for these exact types of topics. However.. in Wikipedia's case, it is a whole different ballgame.

The problem with Wikipedia is that the folks that *now* are most inclined to contribute to Wikipedia are the ones that stand to benefit from their contribution, either by pushing an agenda, or disparaging another source. Granted, there are a number of contributors that are active with good intentions, but I suspect as Wikipeda continues down the path of letting *anyone* contribute immediately, that subsequent contributions will be more skewed towards revert wars and subtle edits to existing content vs. new content and contribtions.

The reality is, all the editing of existing content will become more of a platform to introduce opinnions and agendas vs usable content. Not to say that there aren't contributors that will continue to give good content, but what might have been 5% of agenda pushing 2 years ago is going to be 40% now with the critical mass of information.

Wikipedia is making a good move and the social dynamics will be interesting (i.e. Managing and Staffing this new model)

  23. Understanding the Approach to this on Turning Network Free-Riders' Lives Upside Down · · Score: 5, Informative

For those that are struggling to understand how the author of this article is accomplishing his approach, here is some further information.

The author obviously has a Linux server in his house, that is running DHCPD

To selectively send some clients to some locations, and others to the normal internet, he assigns an IP address on a different network to clients that don't have MAC Addresses that he knows about.

Forwarding on to sites of his choice is done by using IPTables, which is a utility that allows you to configure the packet filtering components of the Linux TCP/IP Stack. In this instance, the Linux box is just functioning as a firewall, and he is selectively sending requests from certain IP addresses to different hosts of his chosing.

Finally, the Up-side-down and blurry-image conversions is accomplished by sending page requests from those before-mentioned IP addresses to a proxy server, which in this case is Squid - and then allowing the proxy server to run a script which calls an ImageMagick command called mogrify which allows you to resize an image, blur, crop, despeckle, dither, draw on, flip, join, re-sample, and much more.

And that folks, is the rest of the story.

I don't see any benefit to being able to watch 1080i or 720p HD programming on a THREE and a HALF INCH screen.

I purchased one of the Video Ipods when they first came out, took the time to rip 10 or so of my favorite DVDs onto the device (finding the necessary software to do this and get it all working properly took days, not to mention the time to encode MPEG to H.264). After about two weeks I came to the realization that an Ipod for watching videos is pretty much useless for my taste.

How on earth is someone going to derive a benefit of HD programming on such as small device? When display devices are that tiny, there is no need for the additional resolution. Furthermore, you are giving up a tremendous amount of storage space for a really negligable benefit.
