Gentoo is great, of course isn't always perfect, an example is with the xorg/xfree, whem xorg come out the portage was crazy, many apps was looking to xfree instead virtual/x11 to resolve dependencies, but in a few weeks everything becomes ok.
I use Gentoo for time_i_use_linux - 1 month time_i_use_linux = 1 year
And i can't see nothing in other distro that i don't have in my gentoo, portage is fantastic:)
There is spamers everywhere, but the kind of spam brazilians do in orkut is because WHE LIVE IN A FREEDOM COUNTRY, WE SAY WHAT WE WHANT, AMERICANS READ IF THEY LIKE.
It's kind strange people here in slashdot complain about the orkut problem, being slashdot a place you can say what you want.
MICROSOFT SUCKS AND IT'S FROM USA, US CITIZENS HAVE FAULT ON THE MONOPOLY BECAUSE THEY DON'T DO NOTHING BECAUSE MICROSOFT MAKES MONEY FOR USA.
A 900mhz Mac haves twice the price of a 1.6ghz PC, non-geek people don't know what a pipelined instruction is, and poor people don't have money.
You can't install Linux using a setup program under Windows and can't run Linux in Windows(of course you can running an emulator or virtual machine, but this can be more hard tham doing a normal instalation).
Many banks you can't acess without using IE.
Many software doesn't run in Linux or MacOSX, most people can't aford a new software only to test other OS.
And finally computers don't ship with Linux and if they do they have a Windows option wich almost everyone that doesn't know nothing about computers will choose.
Not only Linux, Open Source at all is a nice thing, apache is a good example of how open source can be better and most used tham proprietary software, here in Brazil Linux is growing kickly, it's only a matter of time.
Also i think X11 could be better, hope the fork from xorg helps on it.
IE users can use IE with tabbed browsing
But the solution is like many in microsoft softwares world, with third part software: avant
Anyway, IE still a piece of crap with a poor css2 suport and many many other issues, not only security, but the browser allow the pages to do things the user doesn't want.
Hope this hapens, would be nice to open source development in Paraná(Brazil state of UFPR) witch is one of the strongest brazilian states in open source software development
I've studied 2 years Mechanical Engineering in UFPR.
I'm not saying they doesn't exist, but i never seen a Linux Desktop there. 6 months before i've stopped to study there they changed from NT to Windows 2000. Computers with 500mhz running Windows 2000, that computers could be much more productive to students running linux. Of course in Mechanical engineering you need to run programs such as Solid Works, but many computers would be much more usefull if running Linux.
The computers department of UFPR may look at Universities like UFGRS(also here from brazil) witch changed to Linux desktops(in UFRGS there's something about 4000 computers running linux).
In one of the computers rooms for 1 year we have a paper written: "don't execute xxxxx.exe because it's a virus", security was a joke, 10% of the computers are always off because they are with virus, whem the computer was woth Windows NT people goes to the back of the rom and hit "esc" to login and start to do "wrong things"
Message to Customers on "Email Tracking Program" Hoax
REDMOND, Wash., May 12, 1999 - Recently an email has been circulating on the Internet about a new "email tracking system" from Microsoft.
As you may have suspected, this is a hoax and did not originate from Microsoft.
Microsoft does try to investigate the source of these hoaxes and take appropriate action. However, many times the hoaxers take elaborate steps to shield their true identities and we cannot identify them. Privacy and security are very important to us here at Microsoft, and we work every day to build great software for the Internet that keeps information safe, secure and private.
We regret any inconvenience this may have caused you.
2D is quite slow at my machine, i've tryied everything and find no solution(the only one is using the "nv" driver, but them i lost 3D grafics and won't be able to play enemy-territory, and i don't like to shut X down everytime i want to see a 3D grafics), if you go to NVIDIA Linux Foruns you will see many people with the same problem.
Making a comparison: xmame in.x11 mode runs as a piece of crap, unplayable, in.xgl it runs everygame i play(mostly cps1 and 2 games) at full speed.
To me and to people with the same problem i'm quite sure it will run fast, of course that if you don't use many apps doesn't make much sense, but if are always using > 10 apps will make many diference to have a 3D desktop runing almost nice to a 2D desktop running crap.
An emulator is like a software, it's not legal when:
Breaks softwares licences
Are used to run pirataed softwares(in this case games)
Uses confidencial docs to be made.
Games companies wich has made emulators:
Nintendo
Sega
Atari
Namco
Jaleco
Saying "ilegal or not" refering to emulators is the same as you say to normal software, doesn't make any sense as the same way my english doesn't make
This change is not from today, the change started with WIX under the CPL.
Anyway, if you make a CPL program better(and if it's not yours) you can't earn money with this, only if it helps you to make other things, but who created the program can earn money with your code.
The want the media atention and to be the good guys with this things. Them whem someone talk about Microsoft be against open source software they will say: "we released XX softwares under open source licenses, how we can be against our softwares?"
In the fall of the year 1903 The Brothers Wright made a flight of just a few hundered feet in a wooden and canvas contraption that would change the world. They would have been hard pressed to have imagined what there hard work would lead to. These Brothers did this thing of there own accord, they had no help, no government hand outs, no proclamations from the president that a thing will be done because it is hard, just two brothers that owned a bycicle shop and had a thought about how to make this thing work.
Did you still believe in Santa Claus?
This guy have made a flight that changed the world.
the Brazilian's government program against AIDS was appointed as an example for other countries by the United Nations
We breaked the patents to save our people from death, everyone here that haves AIDS don't need to buy the drugs to keep surviving, the governament produces(it makes the costs 1/3 of the original price) and give them for free.
If you make a comparison with other countries of course you will see that Linux is strong here, but i don't think that more than 5% of the people here use Linux as main system. One reason i can think about Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo be strong on these meet-ups groups is that this is a cultural thing. There is something similar in Rio de Janeiro, a MSX group witch makes an event all year, many people goes to the event but if you look how many people use MSX you will se that everyone that still haves a MSX goes to the event.(MSX is a 80's computer).
I think that they have reason to fear, in UFRGS( http://www.ufrgs.br/ ) the main OS used by students is Linux(i'm talking something about 4000 computers running Linux). When others Universities like UFRGS here starts to put Linux in the students computers them we will be more and more stronger in open source software development, this will be a normal side-effect.
I've started with Red Hat 9, i've bought a magazine with it for R$15(U$5), tested some distros, 1 month before i've installed Gentoo witch i'm still using.
Here nearly everyone uses pirated copies of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office in Home PCs.
Microsoft complains with piracy to make us Windows dependent, the price of a OEM copy of Windows costs more than most of the people here uses to live for one month.
For us doesn't make any sense to pay for a OEM copy witch we will not have assistance, and almost all "normal"(non-geek) will need to pay for assistance when a virus infect windows, most of them pays for geek neighbours to reinstall a copy of pirated windows when this happens.
Of course in companies in Brazil most windows copies aren't pirated, this is the market they wants, companies and government computers.
But i'm quite happy that now we have a law here that says that open source will be always the first choice in govern departments, this is making the Microsoft President of Brazil going crazy, all declarations i've seen from him sens desperate actions.
I'm using Linux for 1 year, i still have winXP but for 8 months i didn't used it for more than 1 hour for week, i feel nice to stopped using pirated software, when people here understand that piracy isn't normal things will be better. Government actions to make Microsoft stop to learn our people to use pirated copies would be nice too.
Sorry my bad english, aspell doesn't work for everything:(
The most easy way is buying a OEM copy which costs something about $100 US dollars in my country, but i will not have any kind of assistance, so i will be buying more and more problems, it doesn't make any sense.
Of course i can use a pirated copy, Microsoft like to see normal users in poor countries using pirated copies of windows, but i don't feel good doing this.
This is my main reasons, but of course there is also many others.
I don't know about cairo state, like waimea it seens stoped.
But The enlightenment team is doing a nice job with a lot of nice libs and the DR17 will be relased this year.
Here is a pratical view for what you said:
...done!
:)

Bill Gates is more much powerfull tham Linus Tolvards.
Bill Gates breaked monopoly laws and IS an asshole.
Linus Tolvards is GOD.
You are an asshole!
US isn't a Freedom country.
The world doesn't respect US, the world fear US.
Brazil is the more powerfull country in the world because brazil have more people in orkut!
Iraqians like brazilians because brazilians are the betest soccer players.
Iraqians hate US because US invaded their country and killed their people.
Serious: China _IS_ the more powerfull country in the world, not US
The fact that they cannot read Portugese is a result of the English speakers' ignorance and not the fault of the Portugese speakers.
:)

Ohhhh!
Yeah, you are right, i will love if americans start studing portuguese to speak with me in portuguese at Orkut.
Also portuguese is a very nice language, hard to learn but is nice
I will add you as your fan, i only need to learn, i will read the faq, in orkut is more much easier
We brazilians have our own usenet.
That's why you don't see too much brazilians in the worldwide usenet.
