Wrong. There are very few, if any, high quality screen fonts that are free, as in freely distributable and modifiable. Most of the "free" fonts can't be modified, e.g. in order to add more glyphs (for more languages etc), changing the font encoding etc. Also, they usually don't have very good hinting, which makes the fonts look good in all sizes, and kerning, which adjusts the spacing between glyphs so that any combination of glyphs looks good.

This is great news. From the looks of the screenshot posted in a previous thread, the fonts are very nice.

You could use Jigdo. That's what Debian uses. Instead of having to actually store huge CD or DVD images on you ftp site, Jigdo downloads all each file that supposed to be on the CD/DVD and then assembles them into an image file on the users system. One of the many advantages of this is that it's easy to update your images -- just upload the new files and change the .jigdo file that specifies which files are included in the image.

That's why Debian can distribute uptodate CD and DVD images of "testing" and "unstable".

I agree. In no way, shape, or form, is the "vi" interface a good one.

Huh? It's fast, it's efficient and it's easy on your fingers. How is that a bad thing? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone has to agree.

"Steep learning curve" does not make the UI fast. It makes it slow.

It means the interface takes some time to learn. Of course, if you haven't learned it yet and have to check the docs everytime you want to do something it will be slow. If you use the program often enough that you don't forget everything between every usage, spending some time to learn the interface properly is a great investment.

If you only edit text files once or twice a week, MS notepad is all you need. If you spend hours every day editing text, you'll want something more powerful and won't mind spending some time to use it properly. Of course, it would be great if the interface was "intuitive" enough so you wouldn't need to learn it. But as we all know, the only intuitive interface is the nipple; after that it's all learned.

So, vi and Blender suck for the casual user but are perfect for anyone who uses them a lot.

TeXmacs uses Metafont for everything (including menu text etc). The problem is that the bitmap versions of the fonts need to be generated the first time you use a particular font in a particular size. Two words: Matthew Carter. He's the guy who designed Verdana and Georgia for MicroSoft (plus a bunch of other fonts before that). He was also one of the founders of Bitstream. IMO Verdana, Georgia and Andale are superior as screen fonts to anything else. Although my favourite sans font is Franklin Gothic.

XFree86 can display pretty much any font. The problem is getting the font -- there aren't many free high quality fonts around. Most fonts are pretty expensive (few normal people will pay $20+ for a font); MicroSoft's webfonts were gratis.

  25. Re:what's to stop someone from making an andale co on Microsoft Typography Withdraws Free Web Fonts · · Score: 1
That's true in the US at least. I think copyright law in some other countries differ slightly.

Sure, there's nothing stopping you from, say printing the glyphs from Verdana really big, scanning in those print outs and then using autotrace to get the curves, and then using pfaedit to create you own font and calling it Veronica. The problem is, they will probably look like shit. You can't just rename the original font file, since the actual implementation of a font is copyrightable (if that's a word).

And that's the problem. Creating the design of the glyphs requires a lot of talent and an eye for aesthetics, but there's already plenty of beautiful fonts, some of them hundreds of years old, so not copyrighted. Creating a computer font that looks good on screen in any resolution is the real problem -- it requires lots of hard work tweaking the kerning and hinting.

If you look closely you should be able to notice the difference between a high quality font and a cheap rip-off. Just compare them side by side at different sizes on screen.

But please, if you feel you have any kind of artistic talent, start fooling around with pfaedit and see what you can create.
