George Bush and the new imperialism != the US. I live in the US and happen to believe that his tyrannical worthlessness and the anti-intellectualism that he stands for does not speak for me. Just because some people speculate about the possibility of the leaders of our country being complete and total liars and fuckwits doesn't make them un-american.

  2. RAM on fire on 10 Computer Mishaps · · Score: 1

I was helping a friend build a system for the first time, about 4-5 years ago. He had heard from another friend that a RAM heatsink would greatly improve performance. It might've, had he not stripped off one of the tiny resistors on the RAM in putting on the heatsink. Needless to say, he stuck it in the slot, fired it up, and it immediately caught on fire. He powered the system down and ran out of the room, flaming chip in hand.

I couldn't stop laughing for nearly an hour, though replacement motherboard and RAM wasn't so funny later.

Why does every UNIX article/interview/water cooler discussion have to turn into a fanboi flame war, with people flaming about how OSX is UNIX, and how MacOS already has all the needs of the desktop, etc, etc, ad inifinitum. As much as I love operating systems and product evangelists, the discussions are here are really starting to get out of hand.

What would be nice to have people talk about would be the feasibility of the prediction that is being made, in reference to principles that are desired by the average computer user. Not how a current operating system already has all of these things, and thus should be considered the obvious future choice.

Someone already pointed out that the most technologically sound examples don't neccesarily make it in the industry, and this is illustrated time and again.

Let's start talking about stuff that actually matters, or perhaps ::Gasp!:: even start doing it.

  5. Re:Piracy for the Sake of Piracy. A.K.A. hoarding on Internet Movies Before DVD · · Score: 1

To this I must heartily admit and agree. At one point, I was weeks and months catching up to the music and movies that I downloaded. I used to download about 200-250 songs a day, and about 4-5 movies a night. Obviously, I had a little time on my hands, but I couldn't nearly keep up with the influx of media information in time to watch and listen to everything.

Putting my playlist on random always held up a pleasant surprise, with new songs that I hadn't heard before, though. And I set up a distribution server on the school network for my collection of DivX's, so a lot of other people got to benefit from that.

If someone could explain that awful drive and addiction that comes from media hoarding, I would be grateful in releasing my demons.

  6. Re:change of minds ? on How to Do Everything with PHP and MySQL · · Score: 1

As a Java/C++ developer by heart, and used to Perl in a UNIX environment for scripting purposes, my exposure to ColdFusion as a primary web application programming language has been bittersweet.

I've had to resort to writing my own Java tools to accomplish tasks that ColdFusion should've been able to do multiple times, and torn my hair out over programming errors that seem logical, only to find that it's a simple typecasting problem.

Not having used JSP in a production environment, I am curious how it would compare to a ColdFusion programming interface. The tags and html familiarity make it simple for non-programmers to catch on, and the power of the server to reach in and generate content is also very nice at times. The code can get hairy, and non-logical in certain circumstances, though. Annd....it's not open source, either.

Altogether, those are just about the three strikes I need to use PHP or JSP in the future.
