  1. Because... on iPod Owners Not Thieves · · Score: 1

Isn't this because iTunes makes it so difficult to import songs NOT bought on it's software? And also, nobody wants to have to convert MP3s (which is not a lossless compression alg) to another format (AAC, which is also not lossless). Two conversions could theoretically result in audbible degradation. Thus said, if Apple makes you convert your files to AAC via iTunes before transferring them to the iPod, I would not do it- I consider myself too much of an audiofile (all my songs in OGG anyway). Waiting for the iAudio 30gb version to come down in price then I will buy that (supports OGG).

Damn. Tomshardware had a REALLY good several page version of how to do this. That page has just recently been removed...I swear there has got to be a connection here. I can't even find it on the wayback machine. And google results are turning up negative. It used to be everywhere. I wonder if they fear lawsuit if they keep the page up when someone is trying to sell the same information? If you guys like this, try out www.makezine.com. It's a cool little magazine devoted to DIYers.

In fact, here's my old email. And the old article, on Slashdot: Professor, I wondered if you might find this article really interesting...scientists got 25,000 disembodied rat neurons to create a neural network which was trained to fly a plane in a flight simulator. It's kinda creepy, actually. Here's the link (the first one to a brief version of the article and a discussion of it, the other is the full article): http://science.slashdot.org/science/04/10/24/00242 41.shtml?tid=191&tid=1 26&tid=14 http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,65438,00. html

Nope. Absolutely sure it was the same article (or same data). They used rat neurons to control a flight simulator. Training it to react to weather, keep plane stable, etc. Had nothing to do with controlling rats.

I showed this article (or similar one) to my professor while taking a neural network programming class a year ago (I swear I got it from slashdot too). Why are we listing old news?

  7. This is a fraud on Elektro, the Oldest U.S. Robot · · Score: 1

It would be really cool if this could even be true, but it can't. We didn't even have the tecnology to make robots walk by themselves until the mid nineties (Honda's ASIMO, mid nineties). And can you imagine using a record player to simulate a 'vocabulary' of 700 words? Best of all, they say the robot is now defunct due to wear and tear and general misuse. The truth is it never worked. There are several stories of 'The First Robot' on the web, and all of them have been either completely made up or greatly altered. I wonder if the writer of this story is even aware that the story is a spoof.

  8. Legally on Samsung Announces Zero Dead Pixel Policy · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think there's a legal loophole that may allow ANY monitor with dead pixels to be returned, under a 'false advertising claim.' For instance, say the monitor says it can display, "1024x768" pixels, this is equivalent to 786,432 pixels. But if you have 2 dead pixels, then your monitor only displays 186,430 pixels. Well, the manufacture told you it can display 2 more pixels than yours actually does- and this is false advertising. It should make no difference if they say, "Our policy is that you must have 3 or more dead pixels to be able to return this product." This is only my guess though, any legally inclined people know if this would fly?

It seems likely they will now be getting more hits than EVER before. Or is it just me?
