Although your logic is sound, I believe the parent's point was that you would be punished to a greater degree for downloading a movie than than you would for actually stealing the physical DVD.
I think most people would agree that stealing a tangable item is worse than downloading a copy of something you would probably never buy anyway.
I'm surprized that here on Slashdot (the epitome of geekiness) more people don't use homebrew PVRs like MythTV or Freevo.
While I may be a paranoid tinfoil hat wearing nut who doesn't want Tivo knowing what I watch and rewind, my reasoning is dictated more by the fact that I like to customize my box, add functionality, watch videos I download, and freely distribute content to every PC in my house.
The WAF (wife approval factor) is quite high, and it's definitely a hit with the kids. Add the fact that I've learned way more about Linux in the past year than I did over the past 6 years as a casual user and I consider the project a huge success.
It's actually called alien hand syndrome, and may be the result of a stroke, a brain infection, or surgery.
My wife and I watched a documentary on this condition several years ago. It's been used occassionaly (as an inside joke) to explain away uncalled for lude behavior...usually on my part;)
I too dislike movie theaters...
1. Expensive
2. If you have to pee you can't pause the film
3. Can't smoke reefer
4. Can't drink alcohol
5. You have to wear clothes
6. You can't rewind fleeting boob shots
Is this coating going to protect the top of the disc?
What most people don't realize is that the top of the disc is actually the most vulnerable. You can scrape the shit out of the bottom but a minute scratch on the top of the disc will render it unplayable.
I customized my Myth box to play TV streams via mplayer (should be similar with xine).
I created several text files with.tv extensions containing the various URLs and associated them with: mplayer --playlist -fs (I think that's it, I'm at work right now).
Just do your hardware research first and Knoppmyth is a snap to install. You may need to do a tiny bit of tweaking to get it working just how you want it but configuration should be minimal. ...Unless you're like me and aspire to have the most bad ass PVR on the planet.
I believe you have to use the cable/sat box to descramble the signal.
There are scripts available that allow MythTV to change channels on some boxes via serial port. The alternative is to use an IR Blaster. Either way MythTV can change channels and capture the output accordingly.
As of May 2004 North American MythTv users have been able to legally download schedules from zap2it.com provided we fill out a 5 question survey every 3 months.
Downloading listings is way faster now too. There is no way I would ever subscribe to Tivo or any other commercial PVR service. Long live open source.
It works with firefox, but does not index the history of surfing in firefox like it will do with IE.
Good! Then the wife won't be able to search my porn^H^H^H^H cached websites.
But seriously I don't consider it's lack of Mozilla/Firfox history support to be all that big of a deal. My cache clears itself every couple of days and I have bookmarks for anything important, and don't forget this is still in beta.
It works perfect in Firefox and Mozilla alike.
This is a pretty neat little tool.
My friends and family that have a tougher time digging through their directories (even with Windows Search) are gonna love this. Just about everyone knows how to Google;)
I want to know why the hell it would cost so much. I realize it's an incredible amount of material, but $260 million!? I'll do it for a cool $1 million no questions asked. It's not like it's hard or requires much technical expertise. Just lots of monotonous labor.
Although I'm a happy Gnome user (Dropline Gnome actually), I'm intrigued by this project. I do see room for improvement and hope this project does well.
The beautiful thing with Linux is that you can swap your X Window interface as easy as changing web browsers. More alternatives are definitely welcome.
KDE is nice and polished but I like Gnome's character...It's not so Windows like. I run the FVWM window manager on my MythTV box.
Interesting thought experiment, I hadn't considered that option.
Mac OS would be a formidable opponent to Windows. I would not switch per se, although I would set up a box dedicated to Mac OS to be sure. Of course I'm one of those geeks that has piles of extra hardware lying around just waiting to be utilized.
Apple has made a name for itself. They may not have the market share but anyone in the market for an OS is definitely familiar with them. A well thought out marketing campaign would most definitely score them some serious business.
Sure there's the stability factor but considering the fact that the current x86 leaders Windows and Linux are stable enough for the masses I'm pretty sure a company like Apple wouldn't have any trouble pulling it off.
Believe me I agree that we have many more problems on Earth more worthy of solving but you know as well as I that's not the way the economy works.
Businesses (and governments for that matter) are in it for the money, not to better humanity.
Here in the good old US of A we have money coming out of our big fat asses and then some. The people that have money invest it into things that will make them even more money. Into lobbying efforts that will pass laws to make them more money. Into causes that will give them more power which leads to more money.
There are a few idealists with money but they are few and far between. Yes I'm liberal but I'm also a science geek. I'm a bit torn but I've come to the conclusion that money will not be allocated to the causes that need it most. With that said I am in favor of the space elevator and just about any other worthy scientific endeavor the government's willing to finance, which isn't much nowdays unless you consider military technology.
Let's make space travel cheap. One day we will cononize space, the moon, Mars, and beyond.
By how large of a margin do carbon nanotubes actually qualify? (Yes I am in the process of Googling it)
It just seems like it would have to endure an incredible amount of stress to achieve such a feat.
I never thought of that. What a great idea. You know Gillette won't be championing that idea anytime soon since they make a killing on their Mach 1-5 with vibro lubricating blades (that sounds pretty sick).

I truely hope history remembers him as the worst president the U.S. has ever known.

If I hadn't just used up my mod points I'd mod you up.
I created several text files with
wwiTV is a great site for live TV streams.
I'm sure HDTV will be well supported by that point (summer 2005?) or soon thereafter.
I for one will be hoarding broadcast flag unaware tuners. ...And no, I do not welcome our thought controlling, morality enforcing overlords.

They have my vote.
That's very interesting I didn't know that...And what's the fucking deal with your sig? LOL.

Only if you can run it on Linux.
"When I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master"
Sorry if I offended any of the ladies in here...Oh wait this is Slashdot what was I thinking? Carry on.
Actually forget I said that...um, I have something to take care of brb (be right back).
